Adobe Reader

I have Adobe Reader 7.0 and just got a popup that Adobe Reader 9.0 is available. Should I go with this and should I uninstall 7.0 before upgrading to 9.0?

Many people on gardenweb use the Foxit PDF reader instead of the Adobe Reader. It's small, free and isn't bloated like Adobe Reader. Check it out at the link below. HTH.

But to answer your original question...Adobe 9 is just fine, I think it's a little faster than version 7. When you install 9, the application will uninstall previous versions.

Snidely's comments about mainstream web sites are right on target. Such sites are usually run by knowledgeable webmasters who know how to keep their site secure and are prompt to take action if the site is attacked. Infected ads can happen, though and here is where a little common sense can pay a huge dividend. When you think you might want to click on an ad, make a decision about how important the product/service being offered is to you. If it is important, make an effort to locate the provider's web site yourself rather than depending on the ad to take you there. If you think that's too much work, then think about the potential downsides of an infected computer which could include fraud and/or identity theft. Persons who try to practice safe computing generally don't stumble into trouble. Persons who refuse to practice safe computing don't have to go looking for trouble...it will find them soon enough. AR can be an absolute monster to remove. A free application called REVO is regularly recommended here for uninstalling. I would use it in the Advanced Mode. It first creates a restore point, uses the target application's uninstaller, and then searches the drive and registry for leftovers. With AR don't be surprised if there are many. You will have an option as to whether or not to delete the findings. There is no backup so the choice will be yours and lasting. Personally I have never had a regret with anything I have removed which has been identified by REVO, nor do I recall any postings either. DA

Thanks Mikie, I appreciate the link and answer. She seems to have some aversion to using Firefox, though I can't figure why. I tried to explain how easy it is to use, the explanations for what things are and how to use them are understandable, but she won't listen, and installed a different browser. Don't know why she asks for advice then refuses to take it. I gave her lots of options for browser, malware detection, virus detection, and she still managed to get a bunch of crap on her new computer. Don't understand how. The Norton is a 90day pre-install. I think I'm going to give up on the advice. I have a new computer also, and have not downloaded crapware doing installs of this that and the other. I guess I know a little more and understand more of what I do know. Thanks again for the help.

Thanks Mikie, again! It is the same one I tried to install. It has their toolbar. Its almost impossible to get rid of it once installed. They have made it mandatory to take their seach toolbar with the free ZA. Probably even throw it in with the paid version. Last year you could install by clicking 'skip all offers' but even clicking it installs the search toolbar. I'm running Win XP and need a firewall. Jane

you definitely want to do any updates, many right now are for some pretty serious flaws that have been found so they are security related.

Just be sure you watch for anything extra that may be checked to install like toolbars etc, you can uncheck any of those so they do not install, just get the program you want not the extras you don't want.

Unless a tool has been created or some instructions published anew about removing AR7 and AR8, they are an absolute nightmare to remove. Most users I speak to and I myself recommend it, if you are going to use Foxit Reader just set FR as the PDF default and leave AR alone. Doing so will not hurt anything or conflict.

You are right there DA I have Adobe 7.0.7 installed here but use Foxit and cannot get Adobe to uninstall it tells me to get a patch and one part tells me that it cannot be uninstalled.
