Removal Of Program Question.

I downloaded a program onto my computer about 2 weeks ago for my taxes and after looking at it I didn't like it so I removed the program and returned the product. The program was removed successfully but I got to thinking hey what about intuit? So I did a search and I found 17 files of intuit related to the tax software. I am wondering why the removal didn't get rid of intuit?

A few of the files has intuit on them and the name of the tax program and then there are a few text documents separate.

I will type these and put them here for you to look at. I don't see why I need these and would like to remove them, but I am not about to do that without your expertise first.

1. intuit Folder. In Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. Folders: Common\ then name of tax program. Size: 5.48MB

2. In Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. Folders: name of tax program.

Size: 1.47MB

3. In Folder C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\ Application Data. Size: 0 bytes, Folder Common.

5. intuit.spc.map.features.windows firewallLog

In Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temp. 32KB text document

6. intuit updater metrix log C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\intuit\Common\Metrix\v1\Logs 8KB Text Document.

7. In Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application. Data\intuit\common\metrix\v1\Logs

Well that's it, can I delete all of these? If not which ones do I leave alone?

I would delete them all. They are known as orphan files. It is very uncommon for any application's uninstaller to remove everything. That is why I have been recommending REVO as a means of uninstalling applications. It uses the on-board application installer and then supplements with its own removal utility.

Also, in tax applications the uninstaller normally does not target data folders and files. This allows the application to be upgraded each year, but retains the prior year's files.

First create a Restore point. Then if you need to roll back you will lose nothing from any other work that has been done on your computer.

Many programs leave all kinds of things behind when removed. Could be lazy or incompetent programmers, some files could be deliberate to check year over year. This is where programs like Ccleaner shine, their job is to locate these orphan files.

Personally I would remove all but the 2 below - if I bothered at all.
3 No reference to Intuit as I can see.
16 Caution. While it may well be Intuit it appears likely an HP printer file. Possibly for Intuit but can you be certain?

There will likely be no adverse effect from the things left behind, they are much like that old coat or shoes left in the closet.

I would try to do a Restore. If that doesn't work, does your PC have a built-in Recovery function? Or, do you have Windows CDs? You'll know for next time to never delete anything in the Programs folder. And, the date shown in the default view is the date modified (saved), not date last accessed. Assume that all main operating system files and utilities will have dates that are earlier than the date you bought the computer. Never touch 'em.

I would leave them alone. silverlight is by microsoft it is similar to flash it helps some sites show their content properly. No you do not have to have it but some sites that require it will not work properly with out it. Since you already have it on there I would leave it but that one is up to you. D, Not to over promote or beat REVO to death I have a current example of its service. I just removed WinAmp Full with REVO in readiness to install a current version. WinAmp is a long time and reputable application so a user could assume it had a capable on-board uninstaller. As suggested above, I selected Advanced mode and then engaged REVO. After the on-board uninstaller finished REVO took over. It located 4300 orphaned registry entries, and 1400 orphaned files and folders. These are REVO's numbers not mine. Thank you DA & owbist,

I was thinking the same thing about the HP one just to leave those alone because I am not sure of them and I didn't want to remove those just in case. I was surprised to see those there and not sure if they belonged to intuit.

I have Ccleaner but don't know where to go to see if it finds the Orphan Files. Norton has stopped a few Orphan files but never saw anything like that when using Ccleaner. Would I have to use the registry one in Ccleaner for it to clean up the Orphan Files? If I do this I will definately do a system restore before deleting that stuff.

DA, what is REVO is it like Ccleaner?

Using XP. After I remove the unwanted software via the Control Panel, I do a Start -- Search for the program. Almost always there are files remaining that were not removed by the first step. Then I select each of the remaining ones and delete them using a right click then Delete.

REVO is a very good free uninstall program it will help you fully remove programs from the pc and does a very good job of it plus it does a lot of other neat stuff too.
