Lost Add & Remove Program....Help

I have had trouble with my computer ever since I downloaded Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack etc. I wanted to delete it and see if it fixed the login problem. I went into my Control Panel and clicked on Add & Remove Programs and Windows Components and all I get in a blank page.

I have tried it 4 or 5 times with the same result.

How can I get my Add & Remove Programs back? I have XP.

I have run all my anti virus, AdAware etc. to see if they found anything.

To try to fix this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type regsvr32 appwiz.cpl and click OK.

3. Click OK on the dialog box that appears.

Now give Add/Remove Programs a try.

I tried that 3 times and checked what I typed each time and the only box that comes up says....Windows cannot find what I typed. I even checked to see if that was the dialog box you meant. It still won't come up. Everything else in the Control Panet will come up when I click on it.

Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

I also think the perennial garden is very pretty. It looks terrific for being I like the way there are at least two textures of shrubs on the left side of the entry. I'm not as fond of the mass of conifers on the right hand side - by comparison, it's a bit monochromatic and heavy - not at all the style of your perennial garden - so I'd want at least two textures there as well. Then it would relate to _your_ garden and look very coherent. Also, the upward-arching shape of those right hand side shrubs makes me a little uneasy. For me, (and this is purely personal, everyone else might feel differently), it's almost as though, between those shrubs and the downward arch of your roofline, the house is being caught and squeezed uncomfortably from both above and below. I'd rather see some downward arching shrubs in those conifers' place: something airier that spills out onto driveway and softens the edges, like cotoneaster, so that it is the _house_ that feels substantial and that the shrubs (and the echo of the roofline) embellish the house in a more consistent way. Does that make sense? Sometimes the more I try to write my answer, the less sense I seem to make, even to myself. I also personally love asymmetry. I'd embrace the asymmetry in your architecture by making sure the foundation planting under that center window emphasized that asymmetry (and therefore your front door). I know you say you would like to keep the plantings low in front of the windows, but would you consider at least one vertical planting to the right of the porch (in the leftmost half of the center window?) If there isn't room enough for a tree, then maybe it's just perennial spikes or spires of some kind. Then the shapes could get more arching or mounded as you travel right and to the garage. Somehow, for me, those center shrubs, massed around the centerline of your window, seem to hijack attention toward the peak of the roof, away from the door, while making a statement that it is somehow more important that the shrubs around your house be symmetric around your major window than placed to serve the asymmetry of your architecture. Finally, I think it'd be lovely to pull your containers forward of the porch, if possible. If you like container gardening, perhaps even make a cluster of containers around the forward pillars of the porch. That would really beckon someone in. Those are just my 2 cents. I hope these opinions don't come off as too harsh - I personally think your home is lovely and that it really looks like you know what you're doing from the garden you've started -- just wanted to throw out some more ideas.

I like stumps too. Have them is several places...and big rocks too. I love the natural look as well. I don't want a fussy, precisely planted garden, overly manicured and spaces between with tons of mulch. I try to observe how Mother Nature does her landscaping and then mimic her style. I love Joe Pye Weed too. The only draw back for my garden is that it is not drought tolerant like its relatives. PLANTS I would be lost without: * First of all, my beloved Irises. * Garden Phlox. They can tolerate drought and still bloom and perfume the air. * Ornamental /Prairie Grasses. Add texture and don't require any help from me to grow. * Perennials of all sorts, who reseed, spread out and come back year after year and bloom. * Little patches of grass (lawn) in shady cool retreats. * Old-time garden roses that only bloom in spring. I have more recently discovered the Shrub Roses. These too are tough and don't need to be fussed over. They bloom from Spring to first hard freeze, smell fantastic and only require a little pruning in Spring. * Herbs - a must for anyone "living off the land". * Tomatoes, Okra, Peppers, & whatever else I can grow to eat (which are also herbs). * Native Dew berries (mean Oklahoma blackberries that grow in brambles instead of canes) and the Sand Plums thickets. They both grow the best tasting fruit and because they are natives, don't require any help from me to survive. * Any of the tough, drought tolerant roses (including Rugosas & climbers), that don't need me in order to survive. * Flowering shrubs. Look to old, abandoned home sites for picking the hardiest ones. * I love succulents because they add texture, color and are no-fuss plants. They comes back year after year with no help from me. * And my trees. Beautiful green trees because they add their welcome shade, provide shelter for wildlife and nesting places & food for many animals, including me, the wild birds, bees and butterflies. Each tree sings its own song when the winds blow through their lovely boughs. In the Spring they bloom and the honeybees begin to make their new honey for the season. In the Fall, they provide color and their falling leaves become leaf mulch that nourishes the soil. They clean the air we breathe and cool the earth. These are the plants I could not do without in my country Cottage Garden because of their beauty and my survival. If need be, I could do without everything else. ~Annie

Raven, I only I get to PopCapGames, but there is no PopCDrun.exe. I do believe the problem is related to what I did trying to do the Confiker thing. Using the info in Security Garden I found this: File Sharing This article is intended for people who use a computer that is part of a network or for people who have a single computer that has more than one user account. Can't help with your bread, but I think the fruit thing you are looking for is called Rumtopf. It is of German origin. When I lived in England some friends kept a pot of it on a shelf in their kitchen. It was delicious, and the fun part is you just add more fruit as you use it! Here is a recipe I found when I did a google search: Rumtopf (rum pot) Recipe The ingredients: 1. fresh fruit 2. sugar 3. rum (or brandy) It is traditional to begin with the first fruit of the season. This typically includes strawberries, but fresh fruit is often available all year round. Start with your favorite fresh fruit, as long as it is ripe (not over-ripe) and full of flavor. Ideal fruits are: Pineapple (remove rind & core and cut in large cubes) Cherries (any variety, pitted) Apricots (halves, pitted) Nectarines (halves, pitted) Peaches (remove pits and cut in halves, quarters, or slices) Pears (cored, peeled & sliced) Plums (remove seed and half or quarter) Grapes (sweet seedless red or green grapes are ideal) Strawberries (don't wash, just remove stem & leaves). Strawberries will lose their red color. Raspberries (don't wash). Raspberries will lose some of their red color. Red currants (removed from stem) Other less ideal fruits, may be added if you wish: Blackberries or Blueberries (can be bitter and can discolor the other fruits) Watermelon and Cantaloupe chunks (can make the mixture a bit watery) Rhubarb (can make mixture sour) Bananas (too mushy) Citrus (too acidic) Directions: Wash and dry the inside of the Rumtopf. Wash and dry the first chosen fruit. (Don't wash Strawberries and Raspberries.) Remove any stems, seed and pits. In a separate bowl cover the fruit with an equal weight of granulated sugar and allow to sit for one hour. (example: 3 pounds of fruit and 3 pounds of sugar) Place the fruit, sugar and any juices left in the bowl into the Rumtopf. Pour in just enough rum or brandy to cover the fruit. Weigh the fruit down with a clean saucer or plate Cover the opening of the Rumtopf with plastic (to avoid evaporation) and place the lid firmly on top. Store in a cool place away from heat and sunlight. Adding additional layers of fruit: For each additional layer of fruit follow the instructions above, but use only half as much sugar. (Example: 3 pounds of fruit and 1 1/2 pounds of sugar.) After the fruit and sugar has rested for one hour, gently add this mixture onto the earlier layer. Do not mix the fruits. Add more rum or brandy to cover the new layer. Cover with fresh Saran or plastic wrap and the lid. Throughout the summer, repeat the process for each new fruit until your Rumtopf is full. Then allow the entire mixture to sit for another 4 to 6 weeks. It is best at 2-3 months, which is just in time for the Holiday festivities. Serving suggestions: Serve the Rumtopf fruits with its syrup (hot or cold) over ice-cream, cake, flan, puddings, or cheese cake. Serve in an elegant dish topped with whipped cream or cre frÃ¢iche. An alternate way providing the appwiz.cpl isn't missing or corrupt is go to start, run, type in

control appwiz.cpl

Click OK. The add/remove program panel should come up.

Try a system restore to a time when things were working.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

on your add remove page up at the very top make sure there is a check mark for show updates or it will not show them, sometimes that gets changed.

Thanks everyone.

Terry I did what you said and the Add/Remove box comes up but then nothing shows in the box. It says "Please wait while the list is being populated". I wait 4-5 minutes and nothing happens and the hour glass isn't even there.

Joe, my last resort was to do a system restore and I guess that is what I will have to do.

Raven, I did have "show updates" checked.

I really appreciate everyone trying to help.

system restore is quick and easy and can be easily reversed if it did not help.
did you happen to find the thread here about the .net update? if not look for it and see if you got the second update they put out after the first one to fix some of the problems.

Yes, I looked at that yesterday. I didn't know the difference in the ones to d/l. One was for Windows XP x 86 and the other for Windows XP x 64. I didn't know which one to d/l. ?????

I haven't tried the system restore as I was busy doing taxes today. :-)

Marcia, if you have the 32bit XP operating system, then choose the one "Windows XP x86". The other one is for those using the 64bit XP operating system. The original download should indicate which one it is, also.

Thanks Grandms, I had no idea how to tell which one and I looked at my original update and it was 86. I d/l it and rebooted and I still have nothing showing in the Add/Remove box. Tomorrow I will do a system restore.

If you have your XP disk, I would try "sfc /scannow" in the run box.

What a day I have had. I tried the System Restore and it wouldn't accept the dates I picked, I picked the ones they had noted, and I tried going back to 3 different dates without any success. It kept telling me that they couldn't do a System Restore with the dates I had picked. So much for Ad-Aware doing this job.

I started seaching for free programs for maybe fixing my computer and FINALLY....thank you Raven!....on one post you mentioned to someone to try Superantispyware. I did a complete scan with it and it found 140 cookies. I deleted those and when I went back my Add/Remove was there to see!!!

I have a program where I delete cookies every night before I shut down the computer but I guess it wasn't picking up the nasty ones.

Thank you everyone for your help!!! You have helped me since I first got a computer 12 years ago and then I didn't even know what a mouse was. :-)

if you like superantispyware and it picked up that many I would suggest you also get the free malwarebytes, update it and run that scan weekly, ad-aware is not really that good any more there are much better programs like these 2.

also if you do not have the free spywareblaster I would get that too, it does not scan it just sits there and keeps some bad stuff from ever getting to your pc. Just have to update it weekly and then hit the enable all protection button that is it.

Thanks Raven. I have saved the Malwarebytes site. It looks like it's only free for a trial period and then you have to pay. Do you use the paid version? I already have SpywearBlaster on my computer.

Below is a direct link click it choose save, save it to desktop, then double click the Setup to install it.

These are the instructions we give here at the forum for malwarebyters copy them & save them to a folder if you want.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Â Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Â If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Â Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
Â The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
Â When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Â Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
Â When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

if you do choose to purchase malwarebytes it is just a one time pay so it is well worth it and then it does the auto updates and you can schedule scans. But you can definitely just keep the free one and continue to use it.

Joe, the mywot program is great! I now have it on my computer. Also, thanks for the instructions. I have saved them and copied them so I could follow better while I put malwarebytes on my computer. It found 12 items infected within 4 minutes and then found 4 more in the next 56 minutes.

Raven, I'll use the free malwarebytes for now.

I guess I'd better come over here more often. I have missed some good programs.
