add/remove programs problem

I have tried and tried to remove iTUNES from my PC. I don't use it and it is annoying when I download MP3 music. I use Windows Media Player only. But when I click to CHANGE OR REMOVE iTunes a window shows that it is being installed instead. Help!

Have you set Media Player as default program to handle MP3 files? Just a thought in case you want to keep iTunes but not use it as the default player.

Lots of application show 'installing' when we try to uninstall them from Add/Remove Programs. It's a bit confusing but I would be willing to bet that it is actually uninstalling.

Thankfully, DSS Agent/Broderbund is not on PM 16, so that's not an issue for me. Randy, I searched the software in regedit. All my software was listed, but there was nothing for Printmaster or Broderbund. Mikie, I searched for Application Data\Printmaster folders and found a few in Word that I downloaded from Broderbund with some technical notes I wanted to keep. Would I need to delete these? Soooooo, I need to proceed with backing up my registry before tiptoeing into RegSeeker. I'm proceeding cautiously. These are new waters for me! :) I googled for info on backing up the registry and feel somewhat overwhelmed. I don't know if Microsoft is saying the same thing in two sets of directions or giving me two different procedures... ONE SET OF DIRECTIONS suggests I use my XP Home Ed CD: "Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition" "The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs for Windows XP Home edition. This article describes how to install Backup, which is included on the CD-ROM in the Valueadd folder. To use Backup, you have to install it manually. Note: Automated System Recovery is not a supported feature in Windows XP Home Edition using Backup, but Backup is provided on the CD-ROM as additional value to help back up critical system data. Dar, It does sound like a corrupt application after a virus attack. I have only recently started to recommend REVO Uninstaller as I have had time to use it under various conditions. In your situation, if I were attempting to remedy the concern I would download and install REVO. Then I would reboot into Safe Mode using REVO to remove American Greeting application. A fresh reinstall of AG should hopefully resolve the concern. DA

These are the instructions we give here at the forum for malwarebyters copy them & save them to a folder if you want. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Cat_ky: I think my friend's computer is about 4 years old but he has never used the JASC program. I removed it (and probably other good but unused software) just to have less programs taking up scan time. I agree that boot time is still long. Many of the programs and tweaks recommended on this forum have been applied to improve performance and progress has been made. Maybe limited RAM is now the issue? My friend is pleased as punch with the improvement. And once the computer boots, he says it "flies". The only thing I've done with the "innards" is open the case and blow out the dust and that took some courage for this amateur. I've watched videos about how to install RAM and it looks relatively simple. MAYBE some day I'll get brave and try that. Meanwhile, I'll continue to read this forum and learn. Fruitjarfla: Thanks for the input. I've already used Black Viper - recommended on this forum - to adjust the programs at start-up. Have you tried REVO uninstaller? It is far superior than using just the application's uninstaller.

Do a file search on the word iTunes and delete those files.

The test is if iTunes is still in Add/Remove programs or not. If it still is, click on "Uninstall" and don't worry about what the message is saying: I agree with pkponder above that this function often displays a confusing message.

It is not a real good progressive idea to delete files via Search without using the application's uninstaller and/or REVO first. A user shouldn't make a habit in doing so. Search doesn't do anything to the registry and may result in concerns or conflicts. The uninstaller will, if it works as intended, remove most if not all of the registry entries. REVO often does an even better job.

Using Search after an uninstall is a common protocol used.

What would I do without this forum? Always helpful to a self-taught, dial-up senior! yES, iTunes has been removed from ADD/REMOVE via SEARCH. But I will download REVO as it sounds friendly. I have a great computer guy who has me set up with a good anti-virus program and he cleans my PC annually. Thanks to all!

A couple items regarding REVO so you are aware.

I recommend the Advanced setting when offered the option. REVO will then create a system restore point and run the targeted application's uninstaller. Finally REVO will contimue with a scan for orphaned registry entries and file. When offered the options to select and delete them I do so. I have never had a concern with doing this nor have I read of anyone who has. Be reminded there is no backup.

Not to over promote or beat REVO to death I have a current example of its service.

I just removed WinAmp Full with REVO in readiness to install a current version. WinAmp is a long time and reputable application so a user could assume it had a capable on-board uninstaller. As suggested above, I selected Advanced mode and then engaged REVO. After the on-board uninstaller finished REVO took over. It located 4300 orphaned registry entries, and 1400 orphaned files and folders. These are REVO's numbers not mine. All entries were easily removed.

There is the worth of REVO.
