add/remove programs problem

I have tried and tried to remove iTUNES from my PC. I don't use it and it is annoying when I download MP3 music. I use Windows Media Player only. But when I click to CHANGE OR REMOVE iTunes a window shows that it is being installed instead. Help!

Have you set Media Player as default program to handle MP3 files? Just a thought in case you want to keep iTunes but not use it as the default player.

Lots of application show 'installing' when we try to uninstall them from Add/Remove Programs. It's a bit confusing but I would be willing to bet that it is actually uninstalling.

AVG has a removal tool just to remove their programs I would suggest first trying that. IE 7 is your browser what we need is what windows version are you using like is it xp or vista? This is how you get to the add remove programs area. Start> control panel> add remove programs double click that to open the add remove programs area, wait while it completes the list, then you will see the list of all things on your pc, should you want to delete or remove an item then click on that item to highlight it, on the far right a button will appear that says change/remove or something similar that is the button you want to select to delete the item, it will pop up asking are you certain you want to delete this item if you are sure then click yes and it will begin the removal process. You DO have to be logged in on an administrator account to be able to do this task.

do not panic every thing will ask you that it is just the fail safe to make sure you did not click something accidentally. If it is a program you no longer use or need then go ahead and remove it. YOU must remove it totally you do not want bits and pieces left behind any more than it already does because that can cause conflicts and problems. which is why some programs have additional specific removal tools built for them. Such as McAfee and Norton, for those you do the regular add remove programs then from their website get and use their specific removal tool to get the bits and pieces then you still have to go through and delete some of the left behind folders. but for most ordinary programs add remove does a good job. If you do not know what it is then don't delete it with out doing some serious googling on it to see what it is. If you know what it is and don't use it anymore then just do it. And remember to empty that recycle bin. It will give you room back on your hard drive and depending on how crowded your hd is that could be beneficial, it may or may not speed up your pc. Things that help there would be looking in your startup menu and seeing exactly what is starting up when the computer boots, many times there are things in there that do not have to start up at bootup. but that is a place you definitely need to do some research on what each of the .exe listed there controls. The thing that will speed up your pc most is adding RAM memory if you can and since it is pretty cheap and easy to do it is the best way to breathe new life in to the pc. AND make sure you open the side of the pc(disconnected from power) and clean out those dust bunnies on a regular basis. PS in add remove do NOT remove any of the MS hotfixes or updates.

I downloaded the above software, it looked on the computer for everything that has to do with music match. The uninstaller comes up with 100's of items and says to look over the list carefully and only the ones I check will be uninstalled. 99% of these items are just numbers very long numbers. I do not know what needs to be check and do not want to uninstall something that another program is using. Can you enlighten me on the working of this uninstaller. Thanks for your help

Have you tried REVO uninstaller? It is far superior than using just the application's uninstaller.

Do a file search on the word iTunes and delete those files.

Thanks fruitjarfla......I think that worked. The search produced 100's of iTUNE files.....I never downloaded iTunes. I never used iTUNES.How did it get on my PC?

The test is if iTunes is still in Add/Remove programs or not. If it still is, click on "Uninstall" and don't worry about what the message is saying: I agree with pkponder above that this function often displays a confusing message.

It is not a real good progressive idea to delete files via Search without using the application's uninstaller and/or REVO first. A user shouldn't make a habit in doing so. Search doesn't do anything to the registry and may result in concerns or conflicts. The uninstaller will, if it works as intended, remove most if not all of the registry entries. REVO often does an even better job.

Using Search after an uninstall is a common protocol used.

What would I do without this forum? Always helpful to a self-taught, dial-up senior! yES, iTunes has been removed from ADD/REMOVE via SEARCH. But I will download REVO as it sounds friendly. I have a great computer guy who has me set up with a good anti-virus program and he cleans my PC annually. Thanks to all!

Dahlia,

A couple items regarding REVO so you are aware.

I recommend the Advanced setting when offered the option. REVO will then create a system restore point and run the targeted application's uninstaller. Finally REVO will contimue with a scan for orphaned registry entries and file. When offered the options to select and delete them I do so. I have never had a concern with doing this nor have I read of anyone who has. Be reminded there is no backup.

Not to over promote or beat REVO to death I have a current example of its service.

I just removed WinAmp Full with REVO in readiness to install a current version. WinAmp is a long time and reputable application so a user could assume it had a capable on-board uninstaller. As suggested above, I selected Advanced mode and then engaged REVO. After the on-board uninstaller finished REVO took over. It located 4300 orphaned registry entries, and 1400 orphaned files and folders. These are REVO's numbers not mine. All entries were easily removed.

There is the worth of REVO.
