Programs under Add/Remove (Control Panel) have no size listed

hmmm...I went to watch a video, and it said I needed to update My Flash Player, and had a link to "Get Adobe Flash Player." Well I thought I had Adobe 'whatever' and when I went to Add Remove, I see

Adobe Air listed with no size or date last used, and

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX--- with no size or date when last used and

Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin---no size or date when last used, and

then a couple of Adobe Readers

Adobe Reader 9.4.1 with size 145.00MB ..last used 11-10-2010 and below and to the side of that is

Adobe Reader 9.4.1-CPSID_83708 (Installed on 11-24-2010) and below that

Adobe Shockwave Player Size 5.23 MB Last used 8-23-2008

So...if there is no size noted and if I haven't used something since 8-23-2008, or even 11-10-2010, do I even really want or need them?

This came about because I went to This page and was going to watch the video on How to Refinish a Cast Iron Tub. When I go to watch the video, that is when I get what I first posted above about either updating or getting Flashplayer. When I click on the link to Get Adobe Flashplayer it takes me to a page where I can download Flash Player 10.1.102.64.

So....do I want to delete any of the Adobe junk stuff, before proceeding?

I'd get a pro to do the TUB! They can spray the tub with special products that you will not be able to purchase. Experienced painter here!!!

Check back with that page a little later, I'm getting some sort of error also. Say's video is not available. So it may be an issue with the site for now.

You don't need to delete anything. Keep adobe reader up to date.

Oh, I'm not going to do anything...was just wanting to watch This Old House video about how to do it...They always make stuff look so simple.

Ok, but why doesn't it have a size listed behind it?

anyway...moving on to the next situation. Computer has seemed slow (even freezing today) and thought I'd check my ISP speed. So I went to Speakeasy HERE that I have used before (even in the past week or so) and it says "The Speakeasy Speed Test requires Flash v7 or higher.
Please update your browser."
So I did that, and it is still showing that message when I go to try and do a test. Now I can't even get Add/Remove to open in the Control Panel...maybe I just need to shut it down and come back to it a LOT later...have screwed around and wasted a lot of time, just making myself more aggravated by the minute. grrr...will check back in this evening.

Thankfully, DSS Agent/Broderbund is not on PM 16, so that's not an issue for me. Randy, I searched the software in regedit. All my software was listed, but there was nothing for Printmaster or Broderbund. Mikie, I searched for Application Data\Printmaster folders and found a few in Word that I downloaded from Broderbund with some technical notes I wanted to keep. Would I need to delete these? Soooooo, I need to proceed with backing up my registry before tiptoeing into RegSeeker. I'm proceeding cautiously. do not panic every thing will ask you that it is just the fail safe to make sure you did not click something accidentally. If it is a program you no longer use or need then go ahead and remove it. YOU must remove it totally you do not want bits and pieces left behind any more than it already does because that can cause conflicts and problems. which is why some programs have additional specific removal tools built for them. Such as McAfee and Norton, for those you do the regular add remove programs then from their website get and use their specific removal tool to get the bits and pieces then you still have to go through and delete some of the left behind folders. but for most ordinary programs add remove does a good job. If you do not know what it is then don't delete it with out doing some serious googling on it to see what it is. If you know what it is and don't use it anymore then just do it. And remember to empty that recycle bin. It will give you room back on your hard drive and depending on how crowded your hd is that could be beneficial, it may or may not speed up your pc. Things that help there would be looking in your startup menu and seeing exactly what is starting up when the computer boots, many times there are things in there that do not have to start up at bootup. but that is a place you definitely need to do some research on what each of the .exe listed there controls. The thing that will speed up your pc most is adding RAM memory if you can and since it is pretty cheap and easy to do it is the best way to breathe new life in to the pc. AND make sure you open the side of the pc(disconnected from power) and clean out those dust bunnies on a regular basis. PS in add remove do NOT remove any of the MS hotfixes or updates.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware check here on the microsoft data base for possible solution options, link at bottom. try the Microsoft fix-it Microsoft Fix it Solution Center this is alternative MyUninstaller one other thing to try is to re-register these dll files (in DOS or "Run" box): type in the following (press enter after each command) regsvr32 appwiz.cpl regsvr32 mshtml.dll can you please include what version of windows this is and also what version of Internet explorer you have on the pc, did this start to happen shortly after any microsoft udpates do you know? to be totally clear , can you open the add remove program it self? does it open and show you the list of programs but then not allow you to remove any? when you highlight the program name does it show the remove option? if it does when you select the remove option exactly what happens? does anything change any message? the more info we have the better we can try to root it out. Have you tried a system restore to a previous time when it was working? It could possibly be McAfee causing it, there are some links I am finding to certain updates. It sure would not be the first time, I know I was having a lot of very strange things happening on my pc and the minute I took McAfee off every one of them were miraculously fixed. It is a pain to uninstall it then do a re-install but if nothing else seems to work that may be an option. read this if this is what you are seeing happen you might want to attempt this, if however you are actually seeing the remove button don't bother. Some applications in Add/Remove Programs list are missing Change and Remove buttons ? see this is why we MUST have every detail from your answers I have no information on if you actually see a remove button or not! I did ask this earlier and all you responded with was that you did highlight it please follow through with all the info. jean, I did that, as I said in my post, and couldn't find some of them, like blockbuster video. damcoy, when I tried to search for them, the computer couldn't find them either. The Search option didn't list desktop programs, so I wasn't sure where to look. It listed, "Pictures, music, or video", "Documents," "All files and folders," and "Computers or People." None seemed to be the one for desktop. I searched "Documents" and "Files and Folders" and came up empty.

Yeah, reboot the computer first. Sounds like you have some issues not being able to access the add / remove list is not a good sign. A freezing computer can be a sign of a hard drive issue and other things like that.

I'd consider running a malwarebytes scan too.

I did my tub twice and was never satisfied with the results. Working with epoxy paint is a real skill, it should be sprayed on. My tub dulled quickly and the paint lifted after 2 years.

don't pay any attention to the dates that show on the control panel most of the time they list the date it was installed and say seldom used, I pay no attention to that.

Always instead of clicking to get those things from some website go directly to the adobe flash update page, it has happened that the link on some pages have been hacked and when clicking on get flash you are really getting something different that you really do not want.

To check your version of flash you can go to the flash check site

also using the secunia inspector can tell you when things are in need of update and give the proper links

it is very important to only have the latest adobe reader so the old versions need to be removed same with java.

Thanks to both of you, but now have even more 'situations'.

Got my Add/Remove back, but really am getting off here for a good long while.

Well, all is finally well.

I ended up deleting some things off, and downloading and installing the latest Flash Player and Java. Yesterday I was having fits too, because my ISP was running slow, which I wasn't even really aware of until I ran a test last night and found it was sometimes running 48-86 kbps on the download. I called my ISP and the afterhours tech did what he could and turned in a report for further looking into...such as maybe there being a user who is 'hogging' usage...

Anyway, speed is back up to a bit above normal, so far anyway, at 512-600 kbps on the download. I am paying for 'up to' 512 kbps, but we all pretty know what that means.

So...life is good once again.
