no instructions for manual uninstall; add/remove leaves corrupted

I'm using XP home ed., P4, 512MB RAM, 120GB hard dr, AVG, ZA, Ad-aware, Spybot. I was using a desktop publishing program, PrintMaster Platinum 16 on DVD, when a message appeared: PrintMaster has encountered a problem and must shut down.

After it closed, I restarted my pc and opened the program. The program no longer runs properly. I used the control panel Add or Remove Programs and uninstalled software. I restarted pc and reinstalled program. Same problem exists.

I poured through 123 or 125 technical notes yesterday online at their site. I finally found a manual uninstall which is ridiculous, but I did it. It simply had me bring up the maintenance screen on the DVD and click to uninstall the program. After the uninstall and restart of my pc, I then followed specific instructions for the best install as given in the technical note. (They had me disable all of the programs in StartUp.) However, there must be remnants of the corrupted program left on my pc because the problem is still there.

Printmaster is denying me telephone or email support because they now have a new version out - PrintMaster 17. I called and would be willing to pay for tech support, but to no avail.

How does one go about removing all traces of a program from a system when the company fails to give proper instructions? If I do another uninstall, what would happen if I then deleted the folder for PrintMaster in the Program Files???

Usually deleting a folder with remnants of an uninstalled program has no negative consequences. I've done it many times.

Sometimes you have to look around for folders.. popular would be similar to;
C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Printmaster
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Printmaster

If you were brave like me, you'd run the RegSeeker registry cleaner after uninstalling it and tracking down folders.

OK so we assume you have downloaded and saved the Avast program. Remove the internet connection temporarily. Right click on the AVG icon near the clock click Exit and follow any instructions to complete the stopping of AVG Right click on Start click Explore then use the left side only at first click plus sign beside C:\... and the menu drops underneath click the plus sign beside Program files and it drops again click the Grisoft folder to highlight it Now move to the right side of your screen and click on all the items to highlight them right click in the highlighted area click Delete Back to the left side right click on Grisoft to highlight right click on highlighted name click Delete AVG program is now removed but the registry entries are still present so you might consider running Crap Cleaner before going on. They can be left as they cannot be used once the underlying program is removed Install Avast, reconnect to the internet and look for updated definitions and register the Avast program and you should be good to go.

When I go to that page, it does not list my system information. So I clicked each additional suggestion. No luck. Specifics are: The Firefox plugin is enabled. Nothing happens when I try to open the Java panel. It won't open. The instructions for clearing the cache do not seem right. When I go to the Edit button, I do not have a + or option to expand. So I could not do that one. I did try to find it through tools - options - advanced - network. It says I have no cache being stored for on or offline (I had just run ccleaner before =- so that cleared the cache, I think). I still selected clear now - but I couldn't tell if anything happened. So all the options either showed no problem =- or I couldn't not execute them. Any pointers would be great. Thanks. Lynn.

the first ones you mentioned yes they get installed when you do updates of those programs like java. and MS is guilty of the .Net one you can google that and find some info there. I have open it online use it on occasion but if you do not use it then you can remove. Maybe if you go to the page for it you will remember it's benefits and why you got it. If you have removed Adobe Acrobat Reader you can remove Air also from what I remember. I think it is needed for some types of applications to function properly, similar to flash. If an app you use needs it you will probably get a pop up saying it is needed. you can have more than one pdf reader but you would need to set which is default to be used, or yes you can remove Adobe Acrobat reader I have removed it from all of mine and use only pdf xchange. IE8 is now a much more ready to use than it was early on so sure you can update it and it is more secure. Internet Explorer 8: Worldwide sites

Just go to Program Files and delete the PrintMaster folder, it won't hurt anything, it'll be gone except for some registry entries for an invalid file path and you shouldn't have to worry about them. Then do a reinstall.

CCleaner under issues would clean the reg keys or the free RegSeeker, or use regedit and remove the key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Printmaster., but I wouldn't worry about the registry since when you reinstall they'll be put back in.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I did another uninstall and deleted the PrintMaster folder from the Program Files. I wish I could tell you it worked, but after a fresh install, the problem is still embedded in my pc. It looks like I need to get my courage up and try RegSeeker... First I'll do another uninstall/delete and try the additional suggestions Mikie and Randy offered.

I use CCleaner "issues" whenever I uninstall something, or even install something. Maybe that's not such a good idea, but I've been doing it for ages without any problems. It cleans all the junk up.

Make sure you make a back-up of your Registry if you're going to mess with it and delete stuff on your own....

Just a thought... After un-installing in Safe mode Run Error Checking then Defrag... There maybe a bad sector on the drive... That would block off the bad sector and prevent the program from writing to that sector when you re-install...

Does PrintMaster allow unlimited number of installs per CD?

I haven't installed Elements4 yet because I was about to change machines and was told it would only install on 3 machines. Bummer.

Can anyone enlighten me on whether subsequent installs on the same machine only count as one?

I purchased the newest PrintMaster (17) when I bought my new computer (2g of ram with dual AMD processors) a couple of months ago and had no problem installing it, but later had a problem with the computer shutting down. Come to find out the software also installs a DSS Agent without you knowing it! Everytime you turn on your computer this agent starts trying to connect to the internet and bogs down everything. Its listed in Startup and clearly named "DSS Agent/Broderbund". I've unchecked it, but now I have to figure out how to get rid the the dang thing!! Guess we can't even trust what we think are reputable software companies anymore. Everyone running the newer versions of PM had better check their computers for this spyware :o(

And added thought: I'm wondering if 512mgs of ram is enough with everything else XP has going on in the background. My laptop also has 512 and I always shut down ZoneAlarm and my anti-virus when using any graphics program. (Ofcourse its not connected to the internet at that time) Maybe one of the computer gurus can comment on this.....

Thanks Mikie and I did find the removal tool when I tried to find out what the heck was going on. I decided to just uncheck it for now and then I ran Adaware and deleted what it found. So far I haven't had anymore problems with shut-down. I plan on taking my computer in and having a tech go thru it and check for it plus take afew things out of startup that aren't necessary. I'm just not that savy about computers to mess with any of that suff.

I just wanted everyone using PM to know what might be screwing up their computer!

Thankfully, DSS Agent/Broderbund is not on PM 16, so that's not an issue for me.

Randy, I searched the software in regedit. All my software was listed, but there was nothing for Printmaster or Broderbund.

Mikie, I searched for Application Data\Printmaster folders and found a few in Word that I downloaded from Broderbund with some technical notes I wanted to keep. Would I need to delete these?

Soooooo, I need to proceed with backing up my registry before tiptoeing into RegSeeker. I'm proceeding cautiously. These are new waters for me! :) I googled for info on backing up the registry and feel somewhat overwhelmed. I don't know if Microsoft is saying the same thing in two sets of directions or giving me two different procedures...

ONE SET OF DIRECTIONS suggests I use my XP Home Ed CD:

To backup the registry, open the registry with regedit, click file and then export. You'll just have to give it a name and where to save it. Around 60MB.
With RegSeeker, they'll be a check box in lower left to "Backup before deletion" which backs up the registry in the regseeker backup folder before you clean.
You can use the "Find in registry" with RegSeeker and search for either Printmaster or Broderbund.
With RegSeeker, I just close my eyes and use "Auto Clean" since they make a backup just incase you need to restore.
You could also create a System Restore Point first to be over cautious.
