Oddball Shut Down Problem and Missing Driver

First Problem: (really oddball)

Windows 2000 sp4 all updates current, fresh installation.

Generic computer, MotherBoard is a PC Chips M599LMR.

Socket 7, 400 MHz, Plenty of RAM (don't remember how much).

Computer boots up and runs just fine.

But when it comes time to shut it down,

click Start>>Shut Down>>Shut Off Computer.

The computer goes thru the shutdown routine no problem.

I get the screen saying "It is now safe to turn off your computer."

I hit the power button.....and nothing happens, nothing.

Power light stays on, doesn't boot back up unless I hit Reset.

Never seen this problem before. Never even heard of it.

Anyone got any ideas??

Other problem:

Same computer, in device manager, yellow marks next to PCI Controllers.

I can't seem to find drivers for it, not even thru Windows Update.

I have been searching all day with no luck.

I found drivers for everything else.

Anyone got any ideas for this problem?

Thanks for any help with these problems.

First problem: Bad switch.

I can unplug the computer after shutting down
and this will power it off. I plug it back in
and it stays powered off until I hit the switch.
The switch works fine to turn it on, just not off.
These are N.O.M.O. switches.
If it works to turn it on, I would think it would also turn it off.
Just guessing here mostly. I will check it out tho.

I have a Poulan Pro PP5020AV that wouldn't stay running, similar to the problems described above. The saw is less than two years old. Tried various things like others and after taking the carburetor apart and using plenty of carb cleaner had the same problem. Got it to run briefly by shooting some carb cleaner into the intake. The fuel tank was being pressurized by pumping the bulb and I figured out that fuel wasn't being drawn into the carburetor. Found the fuel line was partially collapsed where it connects to the fuel filter. Looked like someone forced it on and damaged the fuel line in the process. Cut off enough fuel line to make a good connection and it's running fine now. One more issue to consider.

Here is some information I got from a colleague of mine. As far as using a borrowed disc: "The only problem may be that if the installed system has had a Service Pack added to it, the disk will need to be the same or there'll be no Repair option, just reinstallation. In other words, if the system is at SP3 level, a WIN2000 SP2 disk won't work". There have been 4 service packs, so it's more than possible! Windows key: will you need it? "As far as keys is concerned, it depends. Sometimes yes. sometimes no. I think it depends on which Service Pack has been installed and whether the key data is accessible when doing the repair". computer randomly shuts down...

Thanks everyone for the best shot and trouble shootin....i have been trying to keep track of whats happening. Here's what I have noticed---Sometimes it just freezes, mouse, keyboard-does not respond to control-alt-delete at that point. Then I push button for off. 2nd-the computer goes off but the blue light is still on and can still hear running, The monitor is blank though. AGain the off button to make it go off... RAn thorough test on drive and ram-still checking out okay. Anything else I may be able to use for further testing??? I check device manager and event log. Only event log has yellow exclamations...I check out the event online but it just brings me to a generic page-then Im lost.... Will keep eye out on this-I think I read somewhere that the video card with same symptoms can cause what it does. I guess I just don't understand. It can stay on for hours and nothing happens... Thanks though for all help you have offered!!!

Internet Explorer keeps shutting down

Sorry about your passwords, I had no idea that you hadn't saved them somewhere safe. The missing items may have been your add ins, which are usually the source of IE shutting down. Internet Explorer should not have updated unless it has been attempting to update and could not because the browser was unhealthy. Have you seen any Windows or Internet Explorer updates fail just prior to the issues? What were the names of the add ins that you were using? It sounds as if the green circle may have been WOT (Web of Trust). You can download it from https://www.mywot.com/ . The tab settings are found by clicking the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the General tab, and then, in the Tabs section, click Settings. Check the Enable Tabbed Browsing check box. Click OK twice. Did you mean that when you opened Internet Explorer, multiple tabs were opening by default? If that's what you meant, open each site that you want in their own tabs, then open Internet Options and on the General Tab under the Home Page section, click Use Current. Click Apply and OK.

I used to get drivers for non-intel socket 7 mobo's directly from ViA or SiS who made the chipsets. You might run one of the programs that tells the chipset and go from there.

1. Have you checked start/settings/control panel/power options/advanced/power button to make sure it is set to shutdown?

2. My motherboard has the same yellow marks for the PCI drivers when the chipset drivers are originally installed but gives instructions to remove them from device manager after installation of SP4. Once that has been done, on a reboot the computer detects and installs them normally.

Just a couple of thoughts.

Shot in the dark as I haven't seen this in a long time:

Is the button and switch mounted on the case and the wiring attached directly to it? Or, is there an extension rod between the "button" mounted on the case and the switch with wiring?

If it is the latter, the rod is defective or worn.
