Cultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
Comments (78)Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Comments (5)No Photos yet! :>( This is becoming the gall darn reno from H***! Am hoping to nag- I mean convince DH to get walls taped and plastered today- so then I can prime and Cultured Marble guy can come in to do final measure. I am so ready to have this bathroom done! We do have a working toilet and floor down- yeah- but DS arrives home tomorrow, and I guess he'll be showering upstairs (again!:>). Maybe, just maybe he'll have a shower before he heads back to college! (In two weeks). Would love to pick a paint colour, but as shower base is NOT the colour we picked- am waiting till the walls are in, and then will paint (would have preferred doing the painting first) According to CM guy, walls will be waterproof, priming is to cover the blue board so colour doesn't show through marble. Muscat, what is the trim around your surround? Looks very nice!...See MoreBlack or White Cultured Marble?
Comments (5)I think almost any black horizontal surface is a dirt magnet, or a dirt magnifier. I used to love dark finished hardwood floors until I lived with them & noticed how every fleck of dust or piece of hair would catch the light and seemingly GLOW with neon light :( I think light is easier to keep clean. If you color your hair in the sink I'd be worried about stains. But I find dust is an every day hassle while staining chemicals are a rare thing you can sort of plan for. -Pam...See MoreShow me your Cultured Marble Showers & Tub Surrounds
Comments (6)Here are some pics of our tub surround although it's not cultured marble. It's from Onyx Collection. I would've preferred solid white but not with the white tub (too much white and never the same shade). The small soap dish was included and the larger one we bought as well as all the trim. We also got color-matched silicone which you'll have to think about if you decide on a different color trim. IMHO I think it would be tricky to pull off different color panels and trim without looking choppy or unintentionally striped but of course you'll have to decide how it looks in your bath. Maybe your room is short and different trim would draw the eye up to make the shower look taller? TorontoTim is right that despite very specific measurements, they sent the pieces a little too big so we had to trim. "We" means DH with me following directions lol. I guess a little too big is waaaay better than a little too small! Trimming was interesting because, while the actual trimming was pretty easy, the material started sagging if left for very long unsupported. So keep everything very flat (if your cultured marble acts the same)! It's also pretty darn heavy despite being 1/4" thick. DH had to get a very strong friend to do the back panel as I couldn't even lift it iwth DH. Also, we couldn't have moved any of it without the little suction handles. And, we borrowed some wall jacks for the panels while the silicone on the back (clear but bought from Onyx Collection to best match their panel material) cured. Anyway, I got the glossy finish for easiest upkeep and it has been that. We've had it for a several months now and I use 50/50 vinegar/water spray and squeegee to clean--easy peasy! Finally, the pics: Closeup of the cubbies: Closeup of the trim: For some reason, the color in this pic is off. The real color is as above. ps redshoetraveler: do you only have One Red Shoe??
