Black or White Cultured Marble?

We're building, and have caramel maple cabinets in the master and kids' bathrooms. Our builder includes cultured marble as standard and I initially said plain white, not shiny.

Then I saw a House Hunters with black cultured marble. Got me thinking.....

Will the black show stains, scratches, be a bad idea from a durability standpoint?

Does anyone have any pictures of a bath with black cultured marble?

Our tub and showers are white or maybe cream, can't remember, will black look bad with them?

It will show water spots and dust. I have black granite in my kitchen and I hate it. I would go with white marble.

I too have black granite (Bahia verde) looks like uba tuba.
Could be the same thing. Really difficult to maintain. The water spots are endless! Go light and save your self the aggravation!

Cultured granite is a colored resin with a heavy particulate mix that makes it look very similar to Corian or Swanstone solid surface for a "granite-look" appearance. Because of the clear gelcoat it is non-porous and as easy to clean, but softer than true solid surface. The granite-like mix helps hides the inevitable fine scratches that happen over time. Different vendors will have different colors available. We were going to do Swanstone - love the stuff, extremely durable - but needed a particular showerpan size that a local cultured marble/granite vendor could do, whereas neither Swanstone Corp nor Dupont could. Since we were getting the double vanity sinks to match the shower, we thus used cultured granite for all of it. As the CG product included installation, we probably saved about 30% over a solid surface install. We aren't DIYers so it was an easy decision to go with the CG product. Have had it since 2003 and are extremely happy with it. Everybody thinks it's Corian, although I find it easy to tell the difference as CG is glossier; solid surface is a true matte surface.

Cultured marble shower surround with real marble floor

I have cultured marble in the shower with a regular white pan floor. What a mistake! The cultured marble has worn off the seat part and also parts of the wall. My neighbors have experienced the same thing happening to their baths after 10 years. I always used what they suggested for cleaning. If I lived up north I would use the marble but in the south they like their tile.

I had three bathrooms in my last home, all cream colored cultured marble. Yes, it can be easier to clean, but the silicone sealant can get moldy and stain. It also tends to need re-caulking fairly often in spots. When used for a vanity top in a bathroom with heavy use, it will get a "patina" (fine scratches). The manufacturer overall did a high quality job and finish, however, I didn't want to have cultured marble again. I found it "O.K". We are currently building a log style home. My husband wanted cultured marble again, despite the fact that I wanted to try a beautiful tile shower with minimal grout lines. Newer grouts and materials are "supposed" to be much better than in years past. Since we are having all natural products in this house and no sheetrock, I felt with my vintage style sinks it would look wonderful. Long story short, we put in a white on white cultured marble shower, six feet long and four feet wide. I absolutely hate it. It looks like a hospital shower to me and the vintage sink makes it appear even more like plastic. Different shower person this time around. He didn't do what I would call a great installation and the walls are scuffed up. He claims this can be buffed out, but in reality this takes off gel coating. After spending a LOT of money, I want this shower ripped out and something more aesthetically pleasing put in. Sandy

I think it's silly to think a plastic product will look like stone or to think anyone is expecting it to. It's an alternative to laminate if you don't want stone and has its own individual look, sometimes with patterns inspired by nature, like many other products/creations do. Of course they look like plastic but are much better looking than they used to be, with various sheens. I would not buy a counter sight unseen. See where it retails and look for displays. Check with big box stores and k&b supply stores. K&b design stores too. Ask the manuf for a sample you can see, feel and test for durability.

Really? I love black on white or light. Maybe you could mock up both the colors and see what you think. Yikes I was just getting ready to put black galaxy in my master on white cabs. You are scaring me!!! Maybe you could do a multi colored cultured marble, some of the cultured marbles now look just like a Cambria or at least very similar.

I have no experience with black marble or granite but we have a creamy white cultured marble in our bathrooms in our house now and I really LOVE how easy they are to maintain. They are 11 years old and they are just now starting to show some wear in the master bath. The other baths look new still. We also have it on the whirlpool bathtub...I think black would show everything...dust, spots, and scratches.

I think almost any black horizontal surface is a dirt magnet, or a dirt magnifier. I used to love dark finished hardwood floors until I lived with them & noticed how every fleck of dust or piece of hair would catch the light and seemingly GLOW with neon light :(

I think light is easier to keep clean. If you color your hair in the sink I'd be worried about stains. But I find dust is an every day hassle while staining chemicals are a rare thing you can sort of plan for.
