Repeat from another thread-- Did I get a scare when I went on my computer. I got all set and turned on my computer as usual. I can't remember if the welcome screen came but I ended up with a black screen with a dialog box saying: C\windows\system 32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on the computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information may have been moved to a different location Then the message disappeared when I clicked OK and a black desktop with white blank pages in place of the icons were there and the start button with a few of the system tray items. I didn't have the option to shut down (that I remember) so pressed the power button and it blinked so I hit it again or I did the Ctrl, Alt, Delete and the computer booted up with the welcome screen and came up normal. WHEW! That is all I need? What do you think that was all about? Could it have been caused by the updates I did yesterday before I shut down? Windows 7 64bit

I turned off Hibernate-thank you! I was gone for a couple of hours and my computer came right back up when I touched the mouse. As for sending it back, I really don't want to go through unstalling everything-would have to pay someone to do that-then pack it up and return it, and then have to go looking for a new one because I am not ready to deal with Vista-when I can resolve these issues that I have. Then I would have to pay again-to hook me back up again. DH & I are not computer savvy and I have one of the wireless adapters in my computer which would need tranferring. I have been emailing back & forth with HP Help and they do respond within an hour, it is just some of the things they tell me to do are beyond my understanding! Pat

No that article did not apply. Mine shows "Mod Name urlmon.dll". Zep, can I safely remove IE8 and the update via Control Panel? If so, will it automatically roll back to IE7, or how do I go back?

I'm hoping I did this right. First I think I should mention: After I clicked install I had a message pop up that said "HJT appears to have been started from a temp folder. Since temp. folders tend to be emptied regularly it's wise to copy HJT.exe to a folder of its own, for instance C:Program Files\HiJackThis This way, any back ups tht will be made of fixed items won't be lost. Please quite HJT & copy it to a separate folder 1st before fixing any items." I didn't know how to do this..so I just clicked ok. I then clicked System Scan & save logfile button.... then received a message that said.. "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HJT may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. to do this, click start, run & type: notepad C:\Windows\Systems32\drivers\etc\hosts & press enter. find the line(s) hjt reports & delete them. Save the files as 'hosts' (w/ quotes), & reboot. For Vista (which is what I have) Simply, exit HJT, right click on the HJT icon, choose 'run as administrator'. Wasn't sure what that was all about either so I clicked ok and then it scanned. The scan literally only took seconds. Is this normal? I didn't do anything else.
