thassos floor in guest bath - is this stupid?

Ok, so I fell in love with this hexagonal mosaic - each hexagon is about and inch or so big and they come on 1 sq ft mesh sheets.

I love the look and also that the floor will be skid-resistant because of the grout lines.

This would be the bathroom floor in the small guest bath that we are doing. The floor that this tile would go on is about 8x8.

There is a tub in there, vanity, toilet.

If the thassos and the grout are well sealed upon installation, what do I need to do to keep them looking nice.

Or is this just crazy and they will look dirty and nasty in no time?

Lets see-- pure white tile, pure white grout-- you'll need a MIRACLE!!

And I'm not talking the sealants company!! :-)

hahahaha! Ok, Bill, thanks, point well taken. So is that kind of thing only meant to be a wall tile?

Doesn't ANYONE on here have something like that and a positive experience?

p.s. I do have a weekly cleaning lady, who is great - would that be enough? And, this is not our main bath.

I had an apartment once that had two doors on the bathroom. One from the living room and one from the bedroom. It was a sort of 'walk through' bathroom. I loved having a "connecting bath" from the bedroom for getting ready rather than running down a hall to get to it like so many apartments are arranged. I liked the idea that guests did not have to walk through my BR to get to the bathroom like so many apartments are designed. The problem was that once guests were in it they couldn't remember how to get OUT. They always ended up exiting through the bedroom door and got 'Twilite Zone' vertigo pacing back and forth from the bathroom and bedroom never thinking that there might be another door to exit and not what they now saw as a linen closet door that they never checked. Sometimes they ended up hollering for help. OK, maybe my friends are really stupid and yours will figure it out better.

Marble floors in a kitchen/bath?

I had a white marble kitchen floor in a condo once when I was young and stupid. I liked the modern feel of that shiny white floor. That was the first 14 seconds after it was installed. From there it went downhill. It stains terribly, scratches if you breath on it, and is slippery as all get out. I took that out and replaced it with granite. Ok so it was impervious to damage (didn't stain and didn't scratch) but I do have to admit it was slippery when wet, so I just didn't get it wet :oP In a kitchen it was lovely...but that's not a room you try to have a wet floor in. In the master bath I used another granite and it was slippery since you often are "wet" in there. Since then I've learned to use other surfaces like travertine or honed...or in the new place we'll have the antique tile instead. One other option is to use a mosaic for the major portion of the floor or in front of area's you'd use a rug. The smaller the tile pieces on any floor, the more grout...which means less slipping. I'm using that in our entry.

After looking at quite a few houses for sale a few years ago, we decided to buy a brand new house. The houses we had looked at for sale either had dumb stuff done to them, or the owners just really didn't care, both of which were a big turn off for us. So we went for the new build. We needed to get a good price for our old house(built approx 1987), so we took about 4 months (while the new one was being built)and really looked at what needed to be done to help it sell. At the time, the market was relatively hot, so the better your product, the more likely you were to sell. It was in relatively good shape, but did need some work. We basically did things that we would have done anyway if we were going to stay there. We had it re-piped (the older houses around here are notorious for defective/degrading steel pipe). This was our biggest expense, approx $5K. We would have had to disclose it to the buyer and either lower the price or offer an allowance for it, so we figured that having it already done would be a selling point. We finished repairing and repainting the walls that were damaged in an earthquake. We tiled the floors in the kitchen and one of the bathrooms that had horrible ugly vinyl with a nice, light neutral ceramic tile (great buy on discontinued item). We repaired/replaced anything functional that needed it, front porch roof, side garage door, hanging light fixture, etc. We also cleaned everything, put excess items in storage, and had someone come in to cut back/clean up the landscaping. It took more than a weekend to fix it up, and we spent a little money, but I think the results were worth it. The first people who looked at it bought it for the asking price. We had two realtors call and ask to look at it because they had similar houses in the neighborhood that weren't selling and wanted to find out why ours had sold. There were plenty of other things we could have done, but I think we did a good job of picking those that helped the house sell, actually improved the property, and didn't take a horrendous amount of time or money to accomplish.

ok so while I tried very hard to find a better pic that my photographer friend did..since I'm vain and shallow lol..I can't. I posted it here at some point-can't find it. can't find it in my files either. where are all the good photos when you need them? so I gonna expose myself(not the first time lol) and post my own sad pics of our master bath(see how the mirrors don't reach the celing? don't do that. that's me being super stupid. I thought that if the mirror doesn't reach the ceiling-I'll see less of the pendants' chain. LOL). it's right after we moved in..still some dust on the tile because our "finisher" guy was an amazing guy-but wherever he went he left either paint or scratch or dust or whatever so is it sorta gray? yes is the gray warm? oh yes. It changes with light, it can look cooler or warmer-but the overall feeling is of warm, rather then cool even that the stone that finally set the palette (I was set on it before I found the stone, because the stne, I found last-but the stone really helped to tie thigs together, and determined my paint color) has cool grays in it. But it also has warm grays, and these rusty, golden streaks and just to give you the idea how photos can change colors...that's how pendant shades look irl... our house is Spanish Ranch which I love about it and while remodeling I wanted of course to strengthen the idea without going overboard your house might be totally different. Like, completely. I'm not showing you pics because of my choices that had to do with our house, our needs and our likes. I'm trying to tell that "gray" is a big umbrella for many grays..and some you'll be able to distinguish only when comparing one to another. Same will be with "white" or "blue" or "brown' or "purple". One word gives a direction-but doesn't describe fully a color. And still you can think you know yours, bring it to your space-and it won't work. Or it'll work but you won't like it in the evening. Or at noon. You have succesfully chose your colors when you like them 90% of the time..:) Maybe make it 80% even. Light will change them. I like complex colors-these are hard to get right, and light changes them like crazy, and yes sometimes they'll play tricks on you-but I like that feeling of things being a bit not under my full control. I like taming things:) I like when things trick me a bit, and we have a dialogue. It's like they are alive. And have relationships. Which makes all this decor thing much more interesting, at least to me. I do have white in my house(I mean big expanse, like walls..obviously I have it in accents too, I love too many colors to skip on any lol)..but it's not pure white, it's greenish off white that reads warm..yet it's rather white than say, not white. what I knew when I started planning the bath? I knew I want to have floor tile that is very non-slippery yet fits a concept of Spanish Ranch. (that was harsh. hard to find. My first choice was 130$ pers sq f after contractor discount. Would look amazing, I tell you. lol. That's my second choice tile) I knew that I prefer stained vanity(kichen cabs are painted)-and that my favorites are either walnut or teak(went with teak) I knew I have to have shower with bench and tub with step-nothing to do with other people, that's what's safe for me. Other people have their own preferences/restrictions I knew we needed to increase amount of light. I knew we had to leave the space open to the master bedroom or else we'll end up with master bedroom that'd be too dark, rectangular, boring,and won't have feeling of depth. Thus I knew we had to have separate toilet with the door. The rest I didn't know-but it was a puzzle that came together I found amazing tile for the walls-by the time I found it I couldn't afford it (so the tile you see-not my first choice either)). yet I was stricken with green in my first choice tile..i guess hence the pendant I love purples and pinks-hence another pendant. there's also a bit of pink in the hardware. Determine your function. things should be functional, easy to use, safe, and if needed -to be tweaked for you. Determine your style-sometimes easy as in my case since my house informed me of direction. I loved the house, so even easier. As the house is a later attempt on the style-I felt fine with adding simpler elements, and not going full Spanish Revival on it. I just adjusted interior with exterior..so they won't be like from different planets as they were when we bought the house. and then decide on the feel. Feel will point out your colors for you, The direction, Then it'd be lots of going through samples.. You can look at inspirational pics of bathrooms. But you can look at anything, not just interiors. Books, art, movies, parks, landscape..it will all be beautiful but some will get stuck with you more. You'll see. There'll be something about them that will have a bigger power on you, You'll get back to them more. That's how you'll eventually know. What has a staying power for you. I wanted to add some other questionable words of wisdom but I forgot)) Maybe they were most important of all btw I don't know. If I remember and decide that they indeed are..

I just want to chime in because I think it's unfair that anything so stinking pretty could ever be considered stupid! I think thassos is the most beautiful marble.
I made a lot of "stupid" moves in my new house. Once I made my mind up that I loved something, I couldn't settle on anything else despite trying. So, at the last possible minute, I broke down and did the following things:
1. White glass mosaic floor (with greens and tans mixed in) with white grout on the guest bath floor.
2. Limestone floor, shower and wainscoting in a child's bathroom
3. White marble with white grout on the floor and shower in my master bath.
The list goes on but that should give you an idea......

I can't attest to daily use because I'm not moved in yet but every day, I clean up after all the contractors and so far, so good. But we haven't had moisture in any of those baths yet and that's the real culprit. So far, I just really, really, really LOVE looking at it all though, lol.

Hey Rookie2010,

Thanks - actually, I know how you feel. Once I LOVE something, it is very hard to change my mind. Also, I am very easy on things, and willing to maintain them. The issue is that my husband is just the opposite - he is rough on stuff (not on purpose, he just is) and HATES to clean or apply sealer or anything.

Please post pics of your place even if it is not finished - it sounds gorgeous!

I have a messy little family myself. I'm not sure how we're going to keep up on these materials. I can say now that sealing everything is a breeze. I asked the installer to do it and then I've done it twice myself since.
So, nothing's finished yet, some are closer than others though....... none have mirrors, towel bars, etc.

See. I LOVE hex too (this one's calacatta gold, honed). I originally had it on the main bathroom floor but the install was so bad I had to have it ripped out and was rushed to choose something so I went with 12x12s. I really like them though. Makes the room feel bigger than it is.

So is that kind of thing only meant to be a wall tile?

It's meant for something like a master bathroom, where the only people who will usually be using it are those who have a vested interest in keeping it nice.

Hey Rookie, I love your pics, thanks for posting. Each one of your bathrooms really has a wow! element to focus on.

The mosaic in your daughter's bathroom is stunning and elegant. It is feminine without being childish or too girly, if you know what I mean.

I l*o*v*e the green mod circles on your guest bath floor! How can people who have seen it not like that? It is like sunshine - just makes you want to smile!

Your master bath is very spa-like and similar to the look I wanted to achieve with the thassos hex mosaic!

Bill, I get it about the tile. We are almost always walking with socks or *clean* bare feet when we go into the master bath, but guests will have shoes on that may be dirty from snow/mud as the guest bath is right near the front door.

Rookie, if you don't mind, I might copy you and put larger tiles on the floor, and use the hex on the wall as an accent. It might be a better solution for us.... will mull it over.

After I posted the pics I looked at them and realized that the rooms don't look like they belong under one roof! Oh well, it was so hard to choose anything when I LOVED everything! lol.

I like having the hex on the shower floor and the 12x12s on the main floor. I was pretty nervous about so much grout cleaning but then the floor had to get replaced so I was blessed with a second chance.
I didn't think I would like the heavily veined marble on the floor as it wasn't what I had in mind at first. I love it now though or I just stopped caring because I want to get it all over with!
If you love thassos, I think you're on the right track to figuring out how to get away with it. I'll be looking forward to hearing what you decide on.

If you like white, and you like hex tile, why not use ceramic mosaic hex tile? It'd be a whole lot easier to keep clean, I can promise you!!
