Microsoft Visual C++

My control panel has a lot of these listed showing the above "Microsoft Visual C++" with a year and a several digit number after it. I just noticed this tonight when I was downloading a newer Java version. Do I needs these? Many of them have years after them such as 2005, 2008, 2010. Do I need to keep all of them or just the most recent one(s)? Thank you in advance.

The best thing to do with them is.....nothing. Just leave them where is, as is.

Some apps may call routines or software bits that are in those files. Which ones and which ones? It's not something you'll ever be able to find out.

It's my understanding that the code is safe to have, what's unsafe is removing it. Don't mess!

Absolutely essential are C++ 2005, two of 2008 and two of 2010. My Win 7 with SP 1 and Word 2010 operates just fine with these alone...but...I agree with Snidely. Don't mess!

Due to a massive power failure very early on in my Win 7 experience...my system crashed and I hadn't yet backed it up to an independent disk. I had to do a clean install but in the process...not all my C++ files reappeared and I found myself running around looking for necessary missing C++ files. 2005 was almost impossible to find at a safe downloadable site but I finally found it and swore...after that experience to never neglect hard backup again.

In conclusion...if your system is not space challenged...hang onto your C++ files. They're quiet little guys that pack a powerful punch when needed.

Interesting enough, computer was fine until I tried to open Photoshop C3. Like last week, it gets stuck on MMXCore Routines when opening. Tried uninstalling it last week, but apparently it didn't happen. Thought maybe it would open since computer was running okay now. Computer crashed. Ok...I just copied what it said I needed from the instructions. The installation from my old Dell was all on one disk. I'd be afraid I'd mess up the installation if it ended up on multiple CDs. Maybe I should say that there would be more chance for error on my part. The instructions also said that the USB key should have a minimum capacity of 8 GB. Well, when I go to Control Panel, I see there are 45 programs now with total space of 1.12 GB. So what gives with them saying I need a minimum of 8GB? I'm guessing that it would all go on one of the disks at the link below. About them...it says, "This recordable DVD features AccuCORE technology which is 100x more scratch resistant than standard discs.
