ok, so same type issue as previous but mainly if I am on facebook. A little slow loading other webpages as well on occasion. 68 gb free of 105 on the harddrive ad 1gb of ram running Win7. Don't really use it for much other than surfing the web and email so really not looking to replace it so any suggestions?

Off Topic: Who Has A Laptop They Absolutely Love?

    Q

    Comments (48)
Those of you wanting a laptop, definitely read the post Have you switched from a PC to a laptop? lots of good points in it, not only Windows computers but Mac's as well. My pain management doc has a Sony Vaio that he loves as well as 2 Mac laptops; he's mentioned one other but can't justify buying another. Wish I could remember what brand it was. Before buying be sure to research. As johnmari says about her Dell experience, unfortunately, that's what most people say. They also string you along until your 30 days are up to return it, then end up sending you a similar system, usually minus premium software you've paid for; and it's a refurbished machine. I have Windows and a Mac.. While I've been using the Mac mini, Windows is just so much easier and once I get the Windows machine finished (still not done building/adding parts) I will switch to that full time. Not sure if I posted in the other thread about our Compaq laptop, I bought it for my son when he graduated in 2003, that thing was a floor model and is still running. We blew a drive out in an airport (got hit against something) but installing the new drive was painless. I would buy one again, depending on how much they are compared to a Sony. I love the look of the Sony screens; we own 3 monitors with the XBrite technology..

I just don't get it with TEXTING!

    Q

    Comments (33)
I love texting! I'm a middle-aged woman, but I text all my friends, and most of them know how to text back. We text little stuff, things we probably wouldn't make a phone call to talk about. "Clients were awful today. Calgon, take me away!" ... "Grace is driving me nuts. Want her to come live with you?" ... "Fajitas for dinner. Yum!" Texting does not isolate me. On the contrary, it connects me on a new level. It's similar to when email became popular. I got closer to my sister and my faraway friends, because email allowed me to say little things that I wouldn't have called or written to say. Same for texting, only moreso. I also use texting for simple exchanges of information. "We'll be late to gymnastics. There by 3:15." ... " "Will you bring the Mitchell file to court today? I need to copy some stuff." In the courthouse, everyone is texting. It saves so much time. For example, instead of running down the hall to another courtroom to look for a file, one of the D.A.'s will text the D.A. in the other courtroom. I've pretty much substituted text messages for voicemail messages, too. Most of my friends use their cell phones primarily or exclusively, and it's a lot easier to read a quick message than to have to dial into voicemail. (Speaking of which, as far as I can tell, young people don't use voice mail anymore. Young friends of mine complain when their mothers call and leave messages. "Why is she leaving a message? I can see she called on caller ID.") Just FYI, if you'd like to text someone but don't have texting on your cell phone (or don't have a cell phone), sign up for a Gmail account. It allows you to send SMS messages (that's texting) from your computer, just the same as an email. People can respond to you, too. I'm sure there are other services that do this, but Gmail happens to be the one I use. However you feel about texting, I think it's smart for anyone who has a child or grandchild to learn to do it.

    Breaking up with social media

    Q

    Comments (60)
Well if you look at what the fake accounts on FB were doing in the election, they were just posting negative rumor type things on both sides. They were "fake" in that the people were pretending to be groups that they were not, but do we really care or parse where our memes come from? I try but a lot of it is ubiquitous. The fact that folks got caught up in posting it says more about human nature than FB being responsible. Smear campaigns are as old as the hills. But the issue is, if you have your phone with you and are on social media 24/7, then just the atmosphere it creates in your life will influence you. The memes mostly stoked divisions, fear and hate in the populace, for both parties actually. This is an age old technique. Just repeat things in the background and folk will pick up on it as truth, whether they are paying much attention or not. Repeat a lie something like 19 times and folks will think it is the truth. So if you see it 19 times on a pamphlet, hear it in the halls of your high school, or have it pop up on your phone, it's pretty much the same as far as being bad. The difference is how intense and long lasting it is when it is on a device that you are attached to all day long. That's why I am torn. I want the pluses of having my device for positive communication, but want to weed out the negative. This is something my husband and I disagree on, I try to stamp out saying toxic things and having toxic thoughts and hearing toxic sounds that I don't want to influence my life in toxic ways. Hubs says, "oh come on, it's just a movie, or it's just a joke or it's just a tv show, etc." He denies being negatively influenced by watching and hearing angry people argue all day on TV. Hubs and I are basically on the same page with big political issues but not on the same page about how to speak and act and what kinds of atmosphere to immerse oneself in. I think that's because hubs grew up in a toxic home and then had a toxic first marriage. He learned to wall himself off from his surroundings. It's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks. Particularly if the dog doesn't want to learn. So a lot of the time I have to say, "Go ahead and listen or get involved in that, but leave me out of it." He does a lot of positive things too, so far the scale is far down on the positive end, although sometimes it wobbles. My best friend has a similar issue in her long marriage, she says, "Politically and socially we totally agree. But how to load the dishwasher, how often to clean the car, what time to leave for an event, and a thousand other daily tasks we disagree vehemently on." They have contrasting personal styles as do my husband and I, introvert/extrovert, etc. But then he's a contrarian and if I say he's one way, no matter what it is, he will deny it. He often argues he likes something one day and doesn't like it the next, I can't keep track sometimes! Deny or not, the marketers know a lot about how it works, the FB data miners were sophisticated enough to mine and parse information from FB accounts to figure out who was vulnerable to what messages. No different than FB figuring out which ads to show you or tv advertisers knowing who is watching what shows so they can sell air time to companies to advertise. The only difference is that FB did not pay very much attention to what folks were doing with what they sold them. Candidates want to speak with constituent groups and get their message out to them. But what about folks who want to poison the well? Negative campaigns work, spreading insinuating and biased disinformation works. That's the real kicker for me, how do I watch tv, use my phone and even pump gas for heaven's sake and not be bombarded by this stuff? How do I keep the good and weed out the bad? Every time I turn around, some type of haranguing media is on somewhere . . . The tv station doesn't refuse to air a political add because it is biased does it? And yet most people loathe having to listen to that stuff . . . and yet is persists because it works . . . agh!

    A Facebook question

    Q

    Comments (25)
I honestly did not understand what this was even about and I'm on FB daily. I mainly browse from my desktop computer with Chrome, and only occasionally on my smartphone or iPod, and I have not noticed a lack of editing ability. I do not crowdsource business recommendations there, and don't share them either. I don't follow any businesses, unless it's to enter a giveaway, and then I delete them later. I have a limited number of 'friends' on FB - mainly family - and adjusted my settings to keep things more private. I agree nextdoor can be a better source, but around here it's a bit of a crapshoot, due to all the crackpots on there. And yeah, I think that's a bit of misinterpretation of site guidelines, woodrose...

Totally aside from the other advice you've gotten here, I'm a little troubled by your running Win7 on just 1GB of RAM. That is the bare minimum you need to run the 32-bit version, and at that level you can't expect optimal performance. You're supposed to have a minimum of 2GB to run the 64-bit version. You should be able to add some RAM to your system and that should speed things up quite a bit. I suggest you go to crucial.com or kingston.com and plug in your specs to see how much RAM you can add to your system. This could be a cheap way to improve your computer's performance

    Hi millworkman & kudzu9,

Kudzu9 is correct, so after we finish Tomorrow I suggest you also visit the crucial site and consider adding more RAM (Memory) to the computer.

How's the computer running? The log looks good. If you do not use these,

    1. Bing Bar
    2. Bing Desktop

You could uninstall them from the Start>control Panel>Programs & Features list. The Bing Desktop is running at start up.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uTorrent] "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" /MINIMIZED

Are you using the utorrent program?

not to my knowledge, running ok little sluggish still on occasion but probably due to the ram or lack there of.

Right! I would add more ram. Remove the Bing entries and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Ultimate with 1gb, that's the minimum.
I saw one the other day .. was asked to speed it up. It had some virus but also while there I changed the paging file back to default. Somebody made it huge huge.

And unchecked all the gingerbread that eats up too much memory, every one of those things was checked !!! ... the slide in windows,, that fade in the sunlight... with the animated drapes, this and that's. Was told whatever I had done, really made her computer so fast ... heheh

Close all browser windows, open Hijackthis, Do A System Scan Only Place a check mark in the following bold entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QlbCtrl.exe] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Quick Launch Buttons\QlbCtrl.exe /Start
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uTorrent] "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" /MINIMIZED
    O4 - Startup: Dropbox.lnk = Herb\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox.exe

    Click Fix Checked.
    Close Hijackthis.
    Reboot the computer.

We are not removing anything, these programs can be accessed from the program itself and do not need to start up at boot time.

Also Please remove the programs we downloaded, on AdwCleaner double click the program icon and choose Uninstall

On the Junk removal tool (JRT) Right click on the desktop icon and delete it.

Please delete any log files that were left on the desktop.

    Empty the recycle bin.

    That should do it.

ok, thanks much Joe. Where do I find the settings mikie recommends resetting?

He is talking about the page file, you can read about here at the link provided, there talking about disabling it, but there is other information there too, tells you how to view it, in my opinion I would let windows manage the page file for you. I think it's also important that you add more ram to the computer First before making any adjustments and see how the computer functions then.

Control Panel / System .. on left margin should have 'Advanced System Settings' .. then push the Performance button... look around in there.
