Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)

Secunia tells me that I have insecure software, including 4 different ones for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86).

What is this and what software is this connected to? I am not so very computer savvy when it comes to these things.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

vulnerability report
that is the vulnerability report for secunia for that.
Have you gone to the windows update site and scanned your system for needed updates? If not you should do so I think the update for that came through windows update.

you can run belarc and it tells you what MS updates you may be missing
Belarc

did secunia give you a link for the update?

I have updated today on windows update site and then re-scanned Secunia and it still lists 4 patches for this. I would have thought that Windows would have taken care of this. I will run Belarc and see what happens.

Yes Secunia gave me a link, I was just curious to see what it was for as it must be connected with some software that I have.

I also was reading on Secunia's forum that people were having problems with updating it. Maybe I will just sit tight and watch and see what they come up with.l

Sorry to have to post this here; I am still unable to register at Landzdown. If someone could post this over there, I'd appreciate it very much. I completed the instructions, and had just copied the combofix log and was about to post it here when the screen suddenly went black and then the blue screen came on. It says: A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. BAD_POOL-CALLER If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or softwar is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows jupdates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F to select Advanced Strtup Options, and then select safe mode. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007 , 0x00000CD4 , 0x000016EB, 0x81795430) Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. I just typed all of that here (I'm on a different computer) and the blue screen is still up, and the computer is making "working" noise. Should I just turn the power off? I have no idea what to do now. Thanks, Sue

I got the same advisory from Secunia for 2 MS Visual C++ Redis. The link below is the page Secunia sent me to when I clicked on Download Solution.
I went to the Microsoft Update site, it scanned my computer and came up with NO updates for this.
Wondering why that is?

In addition to my prior post.
If you go to the link that Secunia provided and read the text, there is a link to Knowledge Base (KB) Articles: KB973544. Below are two excerpts from that article.

"Important This security update cannot be applied to any other editions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1."

Secunia found 2 insecure instances of MS Visual (2 different versions apparently) and provided the same download link for both. ???
"Prerequisites to install this security update -
To install this security update, you must have at least Windows Installer 3.1 or higher installed on the computer."

Wouldn't these requirements not being read and implemented cause some problems?

if when you go to MS update and scan your pc and it is not listing an update for you pertaining to this then hold off, it could be one that MS listed as an important but not critical update.
when you do belarc does it list any missing MS updates for you?

The techs at the Secunia forums are now saying they are not recommending using it..it is just causing too many problems...I wish I had gotten that notice before getting knee deep into it
