Granite countertops are in... and I hate them

The countertops were finally installed (long story) and although the color isn't what I hoped for, it's OK. The back and side splashes look ridiculous. They are standard height but are about 1" thick. They look like giant granite blocks on the counter. The wide spread faucets aren't in yet, but if the plumber installs them "just so" we'll be able to turn them on without our hands hitting the backsplash, there is very little clearance. They glued the splashes to the countertops because the walls were not straight, so there are 1/4 - 1/2" gaps behind the splash in some areas. I guess I can caulk and paint it but at this point I just want to tear it out.

I guess I should've asked these questions before we bought/installed... but does this seem right? What is the standard granite backsplash width? Any recommendations at this point?
