May be forced to ss sink though I dislike them--will I hate it?
Comments (19)circuspeanut-- You are soooooo helpful! After reading your comments yesterday and doing some more thinking about the topic, we are now leaning towards just reinstalling our sink. We looked online and did find a couple sinks that would probably fit the cutout in desperation if we ever needed to go this route in the future. They wouldn't be what we really would want, and we'd have to lose a drawer and reconfigure the plumbing in order to make them work, but would at least provide a way to fill that gaping hole in the countertop without having to completely start all over again with counters. And, thanks for the link to the fireclay sink. I have been kind of avoiding all thoughts of fireclay since reading here the problems some people have with breakage. And, the one in the link has a main bowl that is smaller than mine; I really wouldn't want to go much smaller than what I currently have. I've also been following up on your idea of totally reporcelanizing. Since our sink still looks really nice, this is something we could do at some time in the far distant future if worst came to worst. I also did some more reading on this, and apparently the current problem is with using this process on cast iron sinks (like mine) because lead can no longer be used in the process. So, many thanks!...See MoreKitchen Blackboards - Love them or hate them?
Comments (58)Okay, so I'm nervous. My name says it all - I'm always repainting something because I get it wrong the first time or two. So I'm not sure if I feel like painting and repainting a 5x6 area of my kitchen wall. But I had two decorators visit from Pottery Barn (you know how they do that free consulation, well they did it for my house and it was great!). Anyhow, one of them planted this idea to make a magnetic chalk board and now I just can't get it out of my head. They said to make it huge, as in the whole wall and that is how I got the idea. But I'm still nervous I won't like enough and spend a lot of money and time on the paint. (this stuff ain't cheap and a 5x6 area will take a good amount of quarts considering everyone says you have to put between 9-10 coats on). Sochi - your door looks beautiful and perfectly sized. The question is would you want something 3x as big? But then I got the idea of really making my own chalk board to hang and then remove when I'm done having it in my kitchen. I'm thinking of using a 4x8 masonite board, painting it with the two paints (magnetic/chalk) and then framing it with nice large molding. Then when I tire of it, we will bring it down to hang in the finished basement. I say finished because I'm dreaming that my basement might be finished in a couple of years. The only thing currently finished about the basement is the mess that has accumulated. Any thoughts on this idea of hanging a large 5'x6' framed chalk board?...See MoreStone veneer fireplace - love them, hate them, indifferent?
Comments (43)jhwu - that is fantastic, what a beautiful fireplace. That room has all my colours in it - walnut, light floors, green walls. I love it. sandnat - thanks for asking. I got sidetracked on another project for a couple of months this fall and this decision got postponed. But, I have decided not to go with stone, but rather tile as was suggested here. I've ordered samples of both the Heath Oval in new colours, and the Walker Zanger Studio Moderne tile. No one in my city carries these tiles, so it is a bit of an adventure getting samples. Although I still think I like the Heath tile just a tad more than the Studio Moderne, I also think the SM tile will better suit my space (although jhwu's photo is making me re-think that). I really like both tiles, so it will come downs to which works better with the look of my LR and DR. The WZ tile only stocks four colours: coconut, jute, ecru and clover. The others are special order. I'm not certain which colour I should go with - the clover may be too much. The other three that they stock are a bit plain. What do others think? My fav is probably the celadon matte. Once I get the actual samples in I might post again asking for opinions on colours, etc. But I'd appreciate opinions now too!...See MoreCounter Height Windows Love them? Hate them?
Comments (36)fairegold on Wed, Oct 10, 07 at 9:45 wrote, in part above, about the two-foot rule of NEC sec. 210.52: "And windows and doorways do not count." While a doorway clearly separates a counter, a window does not. Do you have a reference for this window exception, fairegold? When I raised the issue of a long, counter-height window in the Electrical Wiring forum, the consensus was to get AHJ permission to put receptacles below the countertop. Only one respondent asserted that a window wasn't a wall space. My present belief is that the NEC is missing clairity on this point, but if there is a paragraph somewhere in it supporting the window exception, it would help. kas...See Moremomorichel
