Is this what my broccoli should look like?
Comments (14)Jennie: There's a fine line between harvesting a head at peak and what happened to you. I'm sure that head was "tighter" at one time, no? If you see the florets starting to separate, pick immediately. It appears THAT head wasn't going to be all that large anyhow. Like glib said, it's still edible though -- although the stalk may be a tad fibrous. As far as side shoots are concerned, normally they don't get very large at all. But if you have a few plants, you can usually pick enough at a time for a side dish et al. Side shoots tend to start separating a lot faster than the main head, so keep an eye out. lgteacher: I'm in San Diego and I got heads. The plants and the heads just haven't been that big this season. I think it was a combination of containers(first time, usually I grow in raised beds), a new container mix and a late start in the fall(lack of sunshine and a slowdown in microbial activity). I did do some successive plantings though in the raised beds and they look a lot better. Kevin...See MoreMy kitchen window looks like it should again...

Comments (4)There are different grades of limestone, some are alot denser than others. I have italian limestone called Aegina and have had in my kitchen for about 9 months without any problems. Tobasco, wine, olive oil, and rice vinegar to name a few that have graced my floor. I have seen sealers that look to be like a emulsion covering travertine and I am sure it would work on limestone. If the limestone is porous as to having holes or pock marks I would say that there will be maintenance issues. Take a wet sponge and wet the stone if it readily absorbs water and turns very dark quickly. It will probably be high maintenance. BTW if you leave any wine or acidic substance overnight on any stone floor it will more than likely etch or mark. If your looking for a bulletproof stone floor better look elseware like porcelain FWIW....See MoreWhat should my FMQ look like?
Comments (9)Feathers like this are drawn on. I used a very fine mechanical pencil. It's typical to find yourself resisting the movement necessary for FM quilting. We are taught that we should never, ever move against the feeddogs, and especially not side to side and it takes a while to break through that. Try this: Make a practice sandwich and make big zig zags. Start with up and down ones--that's more natural movement to make at the machine. When you are comfortable with that, switch to side to side zig zags. Now slow down your hands to shorten your stitch length and begin rounding off the points as you make them. Keep making the points broader and pretty soon you'll be meandering. Annie...See Moremuscat
