HELP! Should I cancel limestone order?

Hi -- I posted before and asked if I was crazy to install limestone/travertine flooring. Everyone, except one, had travertine and liked it. Now that I've placed the honed limestone order, I did a wine test, and saw that it left a dark, dull spot even though it had two coats of enriching sealer. The wine was only left for an hour! I did the same test with wine overnight on tumbled travertine (same sealer) with no problems. The store put my order on hold. This limestone is called "Golden Ruby" from Tureks limestone collection. I love the looks but am scared to death because the order is more than 2000 sq ft, including bathrooms and the kitchen. I was even thinking of using it in a shower, but now I'm scared. One idea was to treat the whole floor with muriatic acid after install to take it to a matt finish -- this might hide the etching that is going to occur. In addition to spills in the kitchen, around the toilet area is of real concern. Is there a way out of this dilemma, or should I go to travertine. Thanks very much!

Did you see the Ultimate Kitchens episode this week where the couple talked about their flooring choice being a reaction to the limestone floor they had just had? They said they had become slaves to that floor, cleaning the little pits with toothbrushes more than once a week.

I am way too lazy for anything like that.

why dont you go with a light colored travertine? it looks like limestone and is very easy to maintain...

Thanks to everyone for all of the wise advice! I'm happy to see that last post by professorroush especially (thank you!) because I have decided to go ahead with the planting of the rugosas. At the very worst, I'll end up with a good post for the "worst gardening mistakes ever" forum ;) I do have a little bit of time to try and amend the area a little bit in the hope that I can add enough material to get the pH down a little bit at least. Do you all think I should mix in some peat? Or something else? Is there an acidic bagged soil widely available that is marketed for things like azaleas or anything like that? I love digging in the dirt so I'm not opposed to making it a bit of a raised/mounded bed either...

I don't like what I see either. I"m with you.I'm looking up discussions right now because we just had our brand newly installed honed limestone (shell stone) 1600 sq flooring cleaned and buffed. Well, I"m sick. I LOVE the look of the tiles, saw how they looked installed, and knew it would be just the cleaning to get the final look. We have a water view and get a lot of light into the condo from the sliders in the south facing room. There is so much variation when the light hits the floor, it looks like it's filthy dirty. I appears to have a hazy film all over it, blotch at the same time. When you are standing over it the beautiful little shells and fossils are so cool. When you walk in, however, you have a full view with the sunlight on it of what looks like messy cement. I realize I didn't want polished, but after spending 1600$ on the cleaning today I'm disgusted. Can I now decide to have it re-honed and polished or something? You can't really see it in pictures, as it's all about the glare.

I think mine cost about $80 (on sale, with a Macy's coupon). The good thing is - if you get it from Macy's and hate it, you can always take it back. It's not too heavy, but it's not the lightest iron I've used, either. I do prefer a heavier iron, and do use the steam option (with starch or sizing, depending on the article I'm ironing). Luckily, my days of using liquid starch in the laundry are over (I was married to the US Army for a while)... I took the above-mentioned Shark back (to WalMart) and others, as well (to various stores). That's the best way to try out irons - buy them, take them home & test them, and return the ones you hate until you find one you love. :) I know it's labor and time-intensive, but worth it, IMHO.

There are different grades of limestone,some are alot denser than others. I have italian limestone called Aegina and have had in my kitchen for about 9 months without any problems. Tobasco,wine,olive oil, and rice vinegar to name a few that have graced my floor.

I have seen sealers that look to be like a emulsion covering travertine and I am sure it would work on limestone. If the limestone is porous as to having holes or pock marks I would say that there will be maintenance issues.

Take a wet sponge and wet the stone if it readily absorbs water and turns very dark quickly. It will probably be high maintenance.

BTW if you leave any wine or acidic substance overnight on any stone floor it will more than likely etch or mark. If your looking for a bulletproof stone floor better look elseware like porcelain FWIW.

You can use a hammered finish. I has a light pebbly type of surface that won't show etching. The downside is it might be a bit harder to clean with all those nooks and crannies. I was looking at a gorgeous limestone in Ann Sachs today called Pompignon. Not sure how that holds up though. Anyone know?
