Need help with my Dell Dimension 3000

We added new memory to bring my computer up to 1 GM of Ram.

We also traded in our old cable modem for an updated one. My computer is running much faster than before. But I'm getting a blue screen that comes up with the following message:

"Check for adequate disk space, if driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with hardware vendor for any Bios updates, disable Bios, memory options such as caching or shadowing. Use safe mode.

0x000000xe (0xc0000005, 0x8056795b, 0xeba5cb30, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory. Dump completed."

How can I fix this. My computer is not very old. We bought it in 2005.

I did a driver check and it came out no errors.

Can anyone help me with this? Other than this message, my computer is very fast.

Take the new memory out. See if problem goes away.

Do you have Zone Alarm installed?

Can we assume you had 512 and added 512 or did you buy 1 gig of new RAM? (1 x 1gig stick or 2 x 512gig matched pair sticks?)

If one stick is it in slot zero?

After trying Zep's suggestion try removing the old and inserting the new if both were in there together. What happened in each instance?

parafly, Wait!! Have that topsoil tested for PH level. Screened loam often sits in piles and the ph level can drop, lime may be needed, but it won't help much right now. The benefits will show up in a couple months. Without a good PH level, you can add as much nitrogen as you want, the lawn will not be able to benefit from it with poor PH level. Next, topdressing with compost WILL help. It may be fine without it, but the results will be much better if you do use it. The KBG will grow faster, not germinate faster, but grow faster. By top dressing with compost, you will be adding many billions of micro organisms that natualy break down organic matter and provide vital nutrients for the soil and your grass will love it. When I did my 2005 renovation, I had over 60 yards of loam I spread. I then needed another 30 yards, so I bought it from another source close by, although it was more expensive. As it turned out, the guy with the 30 yards added lime, compost, sand, and fertilizer to his loam. The grass took off like crazy in that soil, while it was not doing too much in the other 60 yards until I limed and fertilized with soybean meal and alphalpha pellets the next spring. As for your slope, I guess it depends on how steep. But i would seed first, then roll it in. Adding some straw can help, but I would go with 1/4" of compost instead. So my 2 cents.... - spread loam with rake, thats fine as long as it looks the way you want it. - seed and fertilize with starter fertilizer. Also add an organic fertilizer. That will start working 2-3 weeks from now. Perfect for when the starter fert starts to wear off. You also will be able to stay off the new lawn for a few weeks and good fert will still be working. - Roll the seed and fertilizers in. - topdress with compost, about 1/4 inch. - Water according to BESTLAWN'S schedule. She detailed it perfectly for fall renovations. You may have to adjust to spring by always making sure the soil is moist. Keep it moist until the first or second mowing. Then moisten on the hot days, that heat can kill shallow rooted grass. Remember you still to keep to the regular schedule, but just add a little extra water on the hot days. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Raven and Owbist, I am so grateful to you. It seems I am safe using the screws for the hard drive bay that I already used. Raven - they are the ones in the first link. Owbist - I pilfered the only screw from my old Dell desktop that looked like the right kind. I only found one screw that seemed to match - I'm not certain what it was holding in - perhaps the power source or fan. At any rate, I think I best replace that before I might ever try to start that old computer up. I don't believe it had a floppy drive - or I'd be happy to remove it (it had just a cd drive). The case is fairly secure for now - but I'd feel better securing it completely - if the cleaning woman bumps the vacuum against it - or my daughter roots around there for a lost ball or toy, it might accidentally open. There's no urgency there, but I'd rather get it taken care of. I suppose I could open the tower again - and take out one of the screws - and match it at a store that builds computer parts. But if I don't have to, I'd rather not power everything down and unhook it. If the hard drive seems securing screwed in (and no part of the screw is protuding), can I safely assume it's fine - and just worry about replacing the case screws. that would be easier. I wish I'd come here first - and saved myself some aggravation. not a single person at Dell was able to give me this information - even though they had all the information you guys did. I truly don't want to have to buy from them again. They were similarly inept when I wanted to add a firewire port last summer. They have a front slot for it - but nobody had the right part numbers. Luckily the Dell forum was filled with trials and tribulations of others who'd attempted this - with no consistent accurate answers from Dell. At least someone there provided the necessary parts - in fact, when I ordered what Dell insisted was all I needed, it was only 1/2 of what I needed. Soon my daughter will be ready for a new desktop. Is there a company to buy them from with good reliability and quality and good technical/customer support? Should I just have one built from a computer place that builds computers? that purchase is likely to be in 2010. Thank you again. Lynn.

A risk with third party batteries is that they not-infrequently are lower quality and have less capacity than OEM versions. I personally never take the chance. A dead battery in a laptop is like a needed major repair on a car - you go the cheaper route if the rest still works fine, or it's a good excuse to buy a whole new replacement. But even when going the cheaper route and getting a replacement battery, i think it's a false economy to buy an aftermarket brand. Capacity is rated in milliAmp hours, for laptops it's usually a number in the single digit thousands ( 3000-9999 mAh hours)

I bought 2 sticks which equals 1 gig. I'm just scared to death to remove them. I shook like a leaf just inserting them, because I was so worried about being shocked. I was told to remove the 2 old sticks and insert the new ones in the same slots. But I'll go ahead and take a deep breath and try it again.

Linda, be cool and things will be just fine. You will not get a shock, the computer is at risk from you and static electricity. Everything inside the case except the fans and hard drive are less than 3.5 volts. Fans and hard drives are 12 volt.

Remove the power cord from the back of the case before attempting anything inside. Then always rest your bare hand or arm on the metal frame of the computer case to dissipate any static electricity that may be present.

The advice to remove both old sticks and insert both new ones is absolutely correct. Just make sure the small slot in the bottom of each stick of RAM is centred over the proper spot on the motherboard and listen for the click as each end clamp pops up to hold the RAM in place as you push down to seat them. You should not have to push the clamps in, they will pop in once the Ram is fully seated.

What about Zone Alarm is it installed?

That is an odd Stop error, 0x000000xe Wonder if it could be Dell specific. It does not show on Microsoft as far as I can see and that's odd usually when you Google the stop error you get a microsoft link...

I might right click your hard drive and select properties .... What size is the drive and how much free space do you have ?

When you added the ram it increased the size of the swap file.

I would like to thank everyone for helping me. I did make a call to Dell and they walked me through checking my memory. Everything checks out fine. They found no problems. So far the blue screen did not come up last night. Maybe everything is ok for now.

I'm moving this to the top with another question. I removed the 2 memory sticks and added the old ones back in. So far the blue screen did not come up. My question is if I reinsert the new memory sticks, do I have to do something with the BIOS? Do I have to set this somehow to accept the added memory? My computer is running a little slower with the old memory sticks. Thanks

No nothing to do in BIOS.

Wait a bit longer to see if the blue screen appears again just to make sure, Then reinsert the new ram again and see if the blue screen comes back, if it does you have most likely isolated the problem to ram and it's probably bad, the best way to trouble shoot is to only put 1 of the new sticks in at a time and run it that way to see if blue screen comes back in an attempt to isolate the issue to 1 stick.

I purchased them through Dell. The blue screen never came up until I inserted the new ram. I thought maybe I had to do something with the new sticks to be sure my computer can handle the extra memory. I called Dell to order them and they said my computer is capable of the extra memory.
I haven't downloaded anything new.

As Zep notes, place 1 stick of the new RAM in alone. Look closely on the motherboard and you will see these are listed as either 0 and 1 or less likely 1 and 2, place it in the lower numbered slot. Run for a day or two then swap to the other stick and see if it causes issues.

Ideally it might pay to contact Dell as long as you are not paying for tech calls and ask for replacements.

Did you do as Mikie suggested earlier to see how much free space was on your hard drive? That can be very important.
