Our 'C' drive is wiped out

At Christmas time, my husband was trying to get a game to play on our laptop and couldn't get the disk drawer drive to work. He fiddled around for a long time and came upon a question as to whether he wanted the computer to revert to how it was when it was new. Unfortunately he clicked "yes" and it wiped out our C drive.

We didn't have a ton of stuff stored there but I did lose a 36-page Word doc of letters that I've been transcribing. The letters are between my paternal grandparents shortly before their wedding in 1917-1918. Transcribing from old hand-written letters is tough work and I'd like to get the Word doc back.

My vague understanding is that when a doc is deleted, it's simply unlabeled instead of actually being erased from the drive. My husband bought some $60 software called Iolo System Mechanic Premium that includes a Search and Recover product. It didn't recover much of anything.

The laptop is an Acer Extensa 4620Z that we've had for approximately 3 years. Is there any hope that I'll get my doc back? My computer knowledge is VERY limited. Thank you very much in advance!
