can't open document

My work schedule comes as an e-mail attachment that I usually open with Word document reader ( I have works, not word installed, but do have word reader). Today my schedule won't open, or rather, it opens, but is unreadable. What is the cause and solution.....other than installing "word" on my computer?

It possibly got corrupted before you received it too. Have you installed any new software or hardware since you were able to open the last attachment? Can you open your last attachment?

Thanks, Raven. I just found that the program (or set up files) were sitting in my documents - and seemed not to have been set up. Maybe my daughter (using my computer) was prompted to upgrade - and downloaded the set up file - but never installed? I'm pretty sure I hadn't done that. Anyway - it's set up and working now. Thanks. Thanks, I'll give it a try. Probably tomorrow. I don't do well at figuring out computer problems at night when I'm tired! DH is snoring in his chair now! We finished our shopping today, and got the tree decorated. Guess we did good, but it doesn't seem we got much accomplished! Of course the recipes I want are for my Christmas baking! Glad to hear it is working for you now! This fix went out on this yesterday afternoon, so everything should be back to normal at this point. Remember, any content on GW is also available on Houzz. If you replace gardenweb.com in the url with houzz.com you should have been able to reach it in this case. The bug was affecting GW urls only. Hope that helps!

Yes it is the KD’s fault. I am sure it has happened to the best of them. Unfortunately a tiny mistake like this can cost big bucks to fix. Good thing is we can learn from it. I have learned so much just reading threads like these on gardenweb over the years. Teresa, I hope they can find a solution that you feel happy about because you should not have to compromise. I would not feel bad making them re-do, replace, or do whatever it takes to make it right. Gorgeous kitchen from the little bit shown! I happen to be doing my research on the same model ge cafe matte white fridge. I would love to replace my stainless one at some point. along with range and dw. I hear it takes a long time, so I am starting early. The first thing I researched was the specs. Will it will fit into my existing space with enough clearance around it? Are the doors going to be able to fully open up (not banging into anything) so that the shelves and bins can be removed to clean? Maryanne, I found the door dimensions quickly online in the manual. Yes, the KD should have read it and is responsible. That is the whole reason you hire a kd, so little mistakes like this are avoided. Still mistakes happen. Live and learn right right? Here is a great video I found. It shows every possible dimension, the clearences needed for doors to open, and all the detailed instructions on how to install it.

Did it come in a .doc format? At work every once in a great while I will get what is usually a Word document in a .pdf format. Human error nothing more.

I believe it came as a docx document. This is different than usual.

If it came as a docx document, then I think that the sender is using Word 2007, and forgot to save it in the old doc format and your word reader program can't read word 2007. I did the same thing sending a document to someone who didn't have W. 2007. I try to remember to save things I want to send in the old format, but it it easy to forget.
Tell them to resend if possible. Possibly Open Office works for word 2007 too. Anyway, it is a handy thing to have on your P.C.

you can get a free compatibility pack from MS so you can read the new docx with your older versions.

I use and like the free open office also as mentioned by zep

also you can use a simple file conversion to change it over to a format you can use.

You should ask who ever creates and sends the work schedules out to save it in Rich Text Format (RTF) rather than docx. RTF can be opened by almost any word processing program.
