Can't access my computer,recycle bin or my documents

Help please I am running Windows XP...............On my desktop I cannot access My computer, recycle bin or my documents when clicking on the icons what is happening here? The other icons open ok can someone please help me?

Might try typing into the Run line three dots, then hit return.

Does MyComputer open ?

I know thats sounds odd.

Also one dot should open your user profile and maybe you can access MyDocuments from there.

Sounds like you need to re-register a file, but I can't think of its name at the moment.

Might run
SFC /ScanNow
.. which is system file checker. Which looks for corrupt or damaged files. It might ask you to insert your windows installation CD. Might not.

I tried your suggestions on the system file checker it came up with the following......Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copies to the DLL cache. Please insert your cd.
I tried the discs I received with my computer which it said were not the right ones!
I received Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 dual core update.
Gateway applications drivers and operating system restore DVD. So now what can I do? thanks JEM

Patsy, I hadn't thought about the potty training. Yippee! And yes, my patience just gets used up. I tried having my son out there with me for a bit tonight -- he thought throwing handfuls of shredded paper into the air, and yard, was great fun! I made a few changes tonight. I rebuilt the main bin at a slightly smaller diameter. I know that surface area is great on the individual contents inside the pile, but I think part of my problem was the vast surface area of the pile itself. As I rebuilt it, I layered in the UCG that my husband unexpectedly brought back from GA today. I did have compost at the bottom of the pile, along with the gazillions of rollypolies. The bottom several inches was mostly unrecognizable except for paper strips (those things are EVERYWHERE), a few corn cobs, and some egg shells. I might be able to make out more in the daylight -- I was out there tonight from about 8:30 till 10 pm. I also took the cardboard box that I'd been storing my paper scraps in and took out the bottom. The top of my old pile went in there, followed by UCG, then wet bits from the old pile, cardboard leaves, etc. until I was almost to the top. Then yesterday's large bowl of stuff, including leftover apple juice from sippy cups, went in the center. A bit more of the old pile, then topped the box off with 3 inches of shredded paper. Folded the top back over -- didn't seal it, obviously -- and vowed not to do anything to it until it shrinks by half. I'm asking around on Freecycle and such for old strip shredders -- the diamonds and crosscut bits seem to mat together so easily. Also, I don't think I'll water the pile -- between the moisture in my kitchen scraps, the leftover juices, and the occasional urine contribution, I don't think it'll need the water. Not in SE TN humidity in summer. So, where I'm at now: 1 2x2x2 box full of fluffed stuff that's been working awhile, plus UCG, a new contribution and a bunch of paper to top it off. One hardware cloth bin (that I'll need to get a lid for before the next gullywasher) that is one foot deep of fluffed stuff. I really like the thought of flipping the contents over completely -- maybe I'll make a homemade rubbermaid tumbler to put batches in....half new stuff, half stuff from the bin... Anyway, I mostly wanted to evict some of the rollies -- I've found a new respect for bugs, except mosquitoes, but the quantity I had was unbelievable.

I'll make a comment on the size of the bins. When deciding on the size of each bin, one might consider the materials you will be composting. For example, if one expected to use a mix of sawdust and leaves as the 'browns', one might make the dimensions 3' by 3'. If one expected leaves to be the main 'browns', one might select 4' by 4' for bin size. If wood chips were expected to be the main 'brown' (without small filler stuff like sawdust), maybe a 5' by 5' size would be a good choice. My mesh bins are 5' by 8' by 2' high, and can reach 150F or more if the mix is optimal. The reason for the different sizes is due to air movement. Movement thru wood chips is easier than thru sawdust or very finely shredded leaves. The third number, height, can be less than the other two if the compost pile is sitting on the ground, which can also store heat. Since it is easier to turn a low pile, my compost piles have never been more than 2.5 feet high in recent years.

I've had infestations in my studio apartment and gotten rid of them. 1. Set up a trap with a small hole they can get in but often can't find to get out, some water with something to attract them (I put in a bit of rotten fruit and put saran wrap over it with a small hole.) They smell the fruit and can find the hole to get in but then can't get out. Put it near your bin. 2. Freeze all your produce before putting it in. FF eggs are often in the rind when you get them from the store. (It speeds up degradation for the worms anyway and if you're doing it for the FF eggs you don't have to feel guilty about using more electricity just to make the worms happier ;-) 3. Put a tall layer of bedding on top of the working food layer. I was told and it seems correct to me that FF won't burrow down in to something to lay their eggs. They'll only lay the eggs if the food is on the surface. I don't cover my bin - the worms need oxygen. I just have about 8 inches of machine shredded crinkled up newspaper (actually phone book). When this paper gets wet and turns in to actual moist bedding with food on top of it, it's less than a quarter inch thick, so it's not really all that much paper, but dry with air pockets it's bulky and prevents both fruit flies and fungus gnats. It will take quite a while, but it can be done. Good luck!!!

polarprincess- What do you have on your computer taking up a lot of space besides a bunch of photos? I have a computer with an 80GB hard drive, and I have never used more than 20GB. Are you loaded up with some programs you don't really use, or music files that you don't listen to? Also, you should not be storing pictures permanently on your hard drive, at least without backing them up onto an external drive and/or a CD/DVD. Look at it this way, when your hard drive fails someday -- as happens to many people -- are you going to have a bunch of valuable stuff permanently disappear because you only saved it to your hard drive? I've had several friends tell me that they wished thay had listened to me when I suggested they do a backup of valuable files...but they never got around to it, and then their computer died. I'm not trying to lecture you...just giving you a word of advice.

A new command to help Repair your computer.
Start - Run - Type - chkdsk /r - OK
Don't forget the space between K /
After you click on Y for yes and
Type - exit - and press the Enter Key.
You can now Restart your computer to begin chkdsk /r

If you want to try SFC again before you end up doing a complete system reload off that dvd image...

A fully populated i386 folder is what the SFC program is wanting. It contains the main windows files.
Some computers will have it on the hard drive, some wont.

You might want to try windows search feature with the advanced search option for that folder.

I think when you run sfc, if windows cant find it, it probably asks if you can browse to it. Aim it at the i386 folder.
If you have multiple i386 folders you need to compare versions on a file or two. One may be original xp or xpsp1 backups.

Another thought, do you have another user account and does it have the same issue? You could also try to set up a new user account, log in and see if it experiences the same problem.

If you can't come up with a solution, try:
Start - control panel - open system icon - click on
support information. I have gotten help here by swapping
emails. They may suggest you buying a CD that they recommend
to fix the sfc /scannow problem.

I bought a new computer once, had a problem and the pc
wouldn't accept the CD for sfc /scannow. Media Center Editon. I carried the computer back to the store and bought
a Windows XP Home Edition. But that doesn't help you.

re-registers the shell, just incase its partially lost.

another possible get lucky attempt;
regsvr32 /i shell32
..refresh/install system folders;(have never tried /i ?)

Or you can always download 250mb or so . windows SP2 for 'Professionals at download.microsoft.com ,
then expand it and try to make youself a C:\i386 folder full of files so you can run SFC.

Done the Run things and it said Dll register server and Dll install in shell 32 succeeded.
Still doesn't work!

Turn your computer on and instantly start Tapping the F8 Key and don't stop
until you know you have a new screen.
Select last known good configuration.
Enter

It's possible to get on the Internet using the Task Manager
If a computer is working OK.

I will give you the commands for Control Panel Icons if they
will open using Start - Run - nusrmgr.cpl - OK

That one is for User Accounts.

If you boot from the restore DVD, it should give you a repair option. It will reinstall Windows without you losing your personal
It was suggested I try the above I surely don't want to lose my personal files...............How do I do this? Thanks JEM

I don't know what restrictions or places you can't go using
your computer. If you can get on the Internet their is a
download in Kelly's Corner that may or may not help.
