tell her to turn off then disconnect from all power sources, on the back of the pc there is a on off toggle switch turn it off, leave the pc set disconnected for 10 mins or more, then plug into wall socket, next turn on toggle switch, turn on pc, see if that helped, if not when she tries to turn it on tell her to hold in on the button for a while and see if it does not eventually start up, for some reason some get that way, I have one on mine that does it, I have to hold in on the button for a while and finally it will start up.

Also if she has a router or modem tell her to unplug it also when doing the power down sequence, and then plug it back in too, before she turns on the pc.

She did as you said, and it is booting up now. Slow but never the less booting. Think she is going to do a lot of cleaning out.

tell her to get the free malwarebytes and update it then run a scan. here are the directions.
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

she should go through the pc and get rid of any old programs she no longer uses by using add remove programs then clean out the recycle bin.
