Do you have 2000 Pro disk you could boot from?

Added by the Sony/XCP DRM security software. This service is part of the digital rights management system utilized on certain Sony CDs. If you remove this service, you may no longer be able to play certain CDs from Sony on your computer.

Google (Sony rootkit) for the heck of it see what comes up.

Just putting ideas out there, bottom line you can't boot, looks like you will need the 2000 disk to boot and do a repair that's all I can think of,

I wasn't brought the 2000 disk
and if I ask for it chances are he won't be able to find it.
The computer is probably a hand-me-down and the disks are
probably stored somewhere and nobody remembers where.

The last computer he bought, he brought it to me to install
his favorite programs and antivirus on it. I kept all the
install disks and put them up some place safe. He won't lose those.

I hate to wipe the computer clean and start over.
I'd really like to find the files I erased.

Let me run it across some friends and see what they say about it.

Ok we already know that,

If you can boot to safe mode, and open MSCONFIG in there disable the sony service not sure the exact name of the service, and it should be under the service tab, but could be under the start up tab as well.

Then reboot of course this all contingent on ability to enter safe mode.

We also can not rule out malware.

Maybe you have an xp disk, you can use that disk and boot to the recovery console.

Pooh try running System File checker, W2K was one of the last where it could be ran without needing the CD.
Click Start/run/sfc/ok

Of course if there is an issue you may need the CD

I would try slapping a linux live cd in the drive and booting off of it and go in there and see what you can find, using a live cd should at least let you boot up and get it going.

I'm gonna work thru some of these suggestions tomorrow.
It won't boot into safe mode or anything else.
It gets to the point of Loading Windows 2000 Professional
and then blue screens with the message above.
I have a lead on a Windows 2000 Pro install disk.
I hope a borrowed disk will work. I'll find out.

Have you ever done a repair install on Windows 2000 before or xp?

Here is some information I got from a colleague of mine.

As far as using a borrowed disc:
"The only problem may be that if the installed system has had a Service Pack added to it, the disk will need to be the same or there'll be no Repair option, just reinstallation. In other words, if the system is at SP3 level, a WIN2000 SP2 disk won't work".

There have been 4 service packs, so it's more than possible!

Windows key: will you need it?

"As far as keys is concerned, it depends. Sometimes yes. sometimes no. I think it depends on which Service Pack has been installed and whether the key data is accessible when doing the repair".

The disk I got has all 4 service packs slipstreamed into it.
And all updates up to October 2008. Still couldn't get it to boot.

I tried a Ubuntu disk. It loaded but I couldn't access the hard drive.

I can take the hard drive out and mount it in a seperate computer.
But what then?? How can I correct the problems.

It should boot up from the windows disk if the CD Rom is set as first boot device in the BIOS.
Press the Delete key on startup to get into bios.
Set cd as first, hd as second.
F10 key to save changes and exit.

Restart machine with the disk in, you'll get the window setup.
