Boots are made for walking, so storing them can be a challenge. After I find the perfect fall boots and spend almost twice as much as I usually spend on regular shoes, they often end up in a pile in the back of the closet or in a hodgepodge assortment by the door.
With the arrival of fall and our penchant for booties, riding boots, heeled and flat pairs, cowboy boots and everything in between, I thought I'd share a few storage solutions to help your care for them. Which one is the best fit for you?

For the Clothes Horse
If a custom master suite with loads of storage is within your budget, have your builder make room for your boots with pullout shoe shelves.

A closer look at Woodmeister Master Builders' work in this traditional home reveals a glass partition, which means you can store two pairs per shoe shelf.
For the Minimalist
Wire organizers from Urban Outfitters pool different items together in this cozy, 600-square-foot rental in the Venice Canals section of Los Angeles — including photographer Annie McElwain's galoshes and her three favorite, well-worn boots. This is a great idea for people who really only wear the same few pairs time and again.

Designer Jennifer Grey uses this old cocktail bar tray from Target as a mudroom boot tray. It's big enough for two pairs of shoes and a pair of boots, and fits well in the entry of her cottage.
For the Lover of Low Maintenance
This walk-in closet leaves enough room at the foot of the pants rack for boot storage. It isn't flashy, but it makes each boot pair accessible and visible — a good boot-storage match for the low-maintenance person in your household.

For the Eclectic Fashionista
Blogger Nina Van de Goor's industrial étagère fits perfectly in an eclectic home. The boots add splashes of candy- and berry-toned color to her neutral space, and the shelving shows off all of her footwear in plain sight.

For the Organizer on a Budget
Spending for custom boot shelves, boot stands and boot shapers adds up. This homeowner simply upcycled from her own closet, using skirt hangers to hang her boots so that the boot tops don't tip over to the side. Genius.

For the Utilitarian
The owner of this Oregon house loves all things equine. A line of her colorful cowboy boots greets guests in the entry, while a photo of her riding perches above. The entry bench and boot storage let the owner pick and choose which pair to wear for her weekend ride on one of four horses.
