Be alert if you download and install new versions of foxit reader it is now trying to install the ask toolbar disguised as a foxit toolbar, also it appears to add a link on your desktop to ebay. this is a link to Corrine's blog with more info.

Beware Foxit Reader Includes AskToolbar!

I know many here use Foxit reader and it has been an excellent alternative to Adobe but with this dreadful new addition I am not sure if it is such a good choice now.

According to Christina, a moderator on the foxitsoftware forum, only the EXE package has the ask toolbar, the ZIP or MSI packages do not. HTH.

Now that strikes me as crafty. Most folks will download the exe files for ease of use. If I remember rightly I clicked so that the toolbar was not installed but that got ignored.

Bejay I can understand your reluctance to install things but there are precautions you can take to protect yourself. One is coming to places like this forum. Remember if I deliberately gave you false information others would immediately jump in and tell you not to take any notice of my suggestion. This is a huge built in safety factor for anyone who frequents these types of forums. Second. Download from reputable sites. Of course you do not know all of them but filehippo.com - download.com - pcworld.com - tucows.com are a few to start your list of safe sites to visit. Others will add more I suspect. Third. Google your choice and see what comments are out there. Look for the first 4 or 5 pages to see if they all heavily promote the program. If so probably best to stay away because those places get paid for each download and have little interest in whether the program is good, bad or indifferent. Look instead for reviews. Fourth. Learn how to create a Restore point. Then before any install create that Restore point so that if you are not happy with your new program you can simply restore to the point prior to the install.

Snidely's comments about mainstream web sites are right on target. Such sites are usually run by knowledgeable webmasters who know how to keep their site secure and are prompt to take action if the site is attacked. Infected ads can happen, though and here is where a little common sense can pay a huge dividend. When you think you might want to click on an ad, make a decision about how important the product/service being offered is to you. If it is important, make an effort to locate the provider's web site yourself rather than depending on the ad to take you there. If you think that's too much work, then think about the potential downsides of an infected computer which could include fraud and/or identity theft. Persons who try to practice safe computing generally don't stumble into trouble. Persons who refuse to practice safe computing don't have to go looking for trouble...it will find them soon enough. Hi, I, too, got Foxit based on suggestions in recent threads. It did make itself the default .pdf reader, but just this moring I went to my Lavabit email account where I received a file labelled PHP -- I'm no expert about such things, so I'm not sure how that differs from .pdf. Anyway, when I went to open it, it did NOT open with Foxit, but with Adobe ! All I could figure to do was download the file to My Documents where I had to right-click and then manually select the program to open the file (where I chose Foxit). Worked great from that point on. But why didn't it open with Foxit by default ?

Thank you all for putting up with me. I valued all your replies! My reason for wanting to try Foxit is, I have been reading our daily paper electronically and all of a sudden it won't let me, saying I have to DL an add on. (I think active X) I am, and have been, using IE 8 on windows 7 laptop Adobe Reader 9. I just tried my desktop WinXP that has Adobe Reader X and all is fine there. Being on dialup, I chose Foxit to DL on the laptop cause didn't take as long as Adobe would had I chose a newer one.

yes very true Owbist the average user will indeed get the exe and what bothers me is the other stuff that was noted in Corrine's post that is included and happens behind the scenes.
Definitely needs to go in the Hall of Shame list now.
Plus the fact that if you do not include the toolbar it tells you parts of it will not work which will cause some users to be fearful and go ahead and install the toolbar.

I second the 'Hall of Shame list'.

I unchecked the box for the asktoolbar it was ignored. Had to remove it with RegCleaner.

Ask is a 'nicer' service... would think add/remove would be a simple uninstall. They certainly wouldn't force it installed without a user agreeing to it... sort of borderline illegal to do that.

Didn't/Don't want ASK. It wasn't in add/remove. Yes - it was forced on me. Yes-I unchecked the box. Not happy that I had to use RegCleaner to remove it.

Sorry about bumping this tread up.

I was wondering instead of using a registry cleaner to remove ASK I could have went to view-explorer Bar- uncheck Ask toolbar quick view. Correct?

that would not remove it, that would hide it from view I do believe.

RC, hide it - that is went I might..LOL. Or I could of used this option> tools-manage add-ons - and disable it. It's been along day just got my laptop up and running. SP> tread = thread. Just thought I would share this for others to see. TY.
