Free McAfee Security Scan Plus

Somehow a installation package for free "McAfee Security Scan Plus" got on my machine. When a dialog box came up asking me to agree to the license terms to activate the program came up I hit the "cancel".

I didn't find anything here when I ran a search on my subject for this post. Anyone have any comments on this software?

I haven't used McAfee anti virus for at least 10 years. The company I worked for many years ago used McAfee. I have never purchased the program myself.

That was the first anti virus I used, I was new to computers so I can't judge how well it worked. It was very hard to update and expensive. When I started posting in here I found out about free software and used AVG, then Avast until they became a problem. They both did their job well, just had to many false positives and conflicts with other software. Now I use MS Security Essentials and have not had any problems with it like I did the others.

It's not an Anti Virus program!

It's a free diagnostics program that will scan the computer, then probably recommend purchasing McAfee.

To Remove the McAfee; just be sure to Reboot when you are finished.

You can uninstall through the McAfee Security Scan Plus folder:

Under Start menu, go to all Programs
Open McAfee Security Scan Plus folder
Select "Uninstall"

all of the major antivirus programs need a special removal tool to fully remove them. They have to get heavily into the system and the registry and that is the part that is rarely all removed when doing a simple removal through add remove programs. I am not surprised in the least by what Geek Squad said which is why I would never let them work on any of my machines, they probably do not do any other removal other than add remove programs and if that leaves remnants that cause problems well then that just means the person has to bring it back again later for that and they get to pay more. Then usually their standard policy is to reformat the computer. This is a link to Corrine's blog with info on various removal tools for antivirus products. Antivirus Product Removal Tools I would not worry I would just get the free REVO uninstaller and use it. this is the forum thread that discusses the webroot removal tool which this guy finally got from them. Solved: Spy Sweeper has me by the throat as you can see he did try using the uninstaller that came with the program as well as add remove programs.

albert- If your wife used Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, it has removed most, but not all, of McAfee. (If she did something else, like only deleted the shortcut for McAfee, it's still there). You can go to the link posted above for the McAfee Uninstaller, download it, and run it to remove everything. I believe it works even if you have already done a partial removal, but not sure. At any rate it won't screw anything up to try it. Also, I've never seen McAfee automatically bill for a subsciption renewal without your consent. I suspect one of you clicked on a button somewhere - like in an email to you from McAfee, or in an update notice as the program approached the anniversary date - and that you agreed to renew your subscription, and probably had to enter your credit card info for the subscription. Lastly, reassure me that you are running some other kind of antivirus software on your computer.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

Have you run a virus check to see if something is messing with the program? I got an odd email from Norton a few days ago about a "free" program they wanted to give me. Knowing Norton I doubt they wanted to give me something for nothing. So I just deleted it. I mention this because maybe someone got into your McAfee in a similar way, "your computer is unprotected" and when you "fixed' it they got in. Just my suspicious nature, but worth a virus check scan anyway.

I bet you did an update of flash and it came along for the ride there is a place on the download page itself where you have to uncheck it if you do not want that.

Yes, I think it was a hitch-hiker on something, could have been "flash"...I have some recall of that update coming in recently.

I did uninstall, and it took about 4 seconds. It must have been a simple scanner to get scare-tactic marketing on my screen.
