Highspeed Internet Access

We will have highspeed interenet access on our vacation. We have an IBM Thinkpad 2460 (560). It's about 10 years old. We do not have the manual. We have the AC adapter and CD Rom and floppy. We would like to use it for email. We have not used it in about 3 years but it does work. It has ProCom Plus installed. What would we need to do and buy to use it on vacation.

Please go to the link below, click on the entry for ThinkPad and 3000 Family notebooks - it should tell you the exact model. I'm not coming up with anything using IBM Thinkpad 2460. I did see some on ebay that probably ran Windows 98. If you know the operating system, you can post that also, it will give us more options.

My guess is it's old and you may not be able to hook it to their high speed. Hotels I've stayed at were using a wireless network and without knowing if your computer has those ports it's hard to say.

You may want to call the hotel (or where you are staying) to ask what type of high speed they have - wired or wireless. Will they have DSL or cable?

I had the number incorrect
It is Think Pad 2640-10U
OS is Windows 95
It is cable modem
We did use this with dialup service at one time.

I don't know if McDonalds is an open network or not, but if it is you should be able to connect automatically. If you don't get a connections, again if open, McD may have some log-on requirement, most do, something to say you agree to be on an open, no security, network Seems I sometimes have to click: Start -> connect to -> Show all connections -> Click on the "Wireless" Icon and ask to "see all networks". This may be enough to get you connected, if necessary at all.

I suffered with dialup up until about a year ago and finally gave up on it and got DSL. However the phone lines in my neighborhood are so bad that everytime it rained my internet wouldn't work for a day or so. Literally the squirrels etc were chewing or their claws were wrecking the wires on the poles. Bell came out a few times but said there wasn't any hope because my neighborhood wasn't due for replacement. So I winced and got cable high speed and couldn't be happier. It's well worth it.

The laptop needs a NIC and some length of network cable. Does it have a built in NIC ? If not you need to find a 16bit pcmcia network card for it.
