AOL Browser all right?

A severely computer challenged friend who doesn't live very close uses AOL Browser. Sometimes I am trying to help her via phone with 'problems'. Since she is using AOL and I'm using FF of course we see different things. I've thought of adding AOL Browser to my computer thinking it might be easier to help her sometimes via phone. Is there any good reason why I shouldn't?

There's no way I can get her to add FF to her computer, or to try using it.

Her latest problems wwere signing up at 2 different sites, Freecycle being one of them, and then setting her personal settings to get all Freecycle replies emailed to her individually. She finally gave me her user ID and password and I went and chnged her settings there as well as at another site.

I think I finally got her straight about not using her first and last name as her 'user' name on sites and suggested that she be the same 'user' everywhere to keep things simple. I 'do' hope to sometime catch up with her at her house to have a little lesson. I hope to show her about having and using folders with her emails, and also about bookmarks/favorites(?) and folders with AOL.

Not really, It will certainly make it easier to help. AOL Browser is simply Internet Explore with AOL additions to make it look different like AOL...

I guess before I download anything I'd best be sure I'm getting exactly what she has.

In Googling I found this Internet Explorer 8 Optimized for AOL

Then there is this...AOL 9.0VR or an even later version of AOL 9.5

I know at one time she had AOL for her ISP, but now has a local high speed ISP through someone. After she got highspeed she just kept using AOL browser, I'm guessing.

I'm so confused. IE with AOL additions? The links above don't say that, but I'm not doubting you. Like I said...the blind leadin' the blind.

Every bit of information helps, so thank you. However I was aware of the change and transfered my pictures from AOL to American Greetings in October when first notified by AOL about discontinuing it's pictures option. In retrospect a bad move because I could have had more time with AOL Pictures to transfer them to Picturetrails using the URLs. "American Greetings" is basically a "sell" site(prints, their own website services etc.) and as of now has no option to transfer photos to other places(E-bay, Picture trails, Gardenweb forums etc.). My SS (step son) works for HP and in my book is a computer wiz, but even he doesn't get AOL. Which is why I think it might be necessary for someone to have experience with it. But really questions, comments to me of a basic level are helpful. So thank you for yours. I think it's going to take a computer "House" with a NICE bedside manner to help me.

Terry - that was great - thanks. It completely did what I wanted to achieve. I can easily see if I've gotten new email on my other account without switching software, etc Now a new problem occurred yesterday - before I made those changes - and I have no idea what I may have done to cause it. probably something I did in experimenting with all these different email issues. I had my firefox set up to send links in emails (from my AOL address). But now I'm trying to send my mother a link (for the emergency microsoft update from 2 days ago) - and when I'm in Firefox (and the computer forum thread is open - or any web page is open) - and I go to File - then click send link - it brings up an email form (with my screen name in AOL as the sender - so that party's working) - but a whole mishigosh of info (the link info, perhaps) appears in the space where I should be entering the email address I'm sending it to. I have no idea why that is happening. If I cut and paste that info into the body of the email - and send it to myself to test it - it doesn't appear to be a link to get me to the webpage I want). Seems to me that the webpage link should be referred to in the subject line - and supplied in the body of the email - not some mess of information occuring in the send to line. I tried going to FF tools - applications- and mail to . I have several options to choose from - use AOL software (this appears twice - once with the AOL triangle with "default" in parentheses and once with what looks like a mail page form), and once it says use AOL mail. I think I've tried all three and it still doesn't work. And before I started trying to change my email settings this week, I think there was only 1 or 2 AOL options for mail application in Firefox. Okay - so now I checked all three. On use AOL mail, it gives me the gibberish (somehow related to the webpage I'm trying to send a link for) in the to: line. If I choose use AOL software (default) - with the mail form logo - it goes to AOL software - sets up the email correctly with the information about the link in the subject line - and the to: field blank for me to fill in the recipient. But it wants me to sign on or the send button is faded and I can't click it. If I choose use AOL software (with the AOL logo - not the email logo), it takes me to the AOL software page and says this file may not be supported by AOL. AOL will try to send it as a text file (and if I choose to try, it will tell me the file is too big). So I do I email somebody links? Thanks. Lynn.

I do my banking, log out, then completly close the window/page using the X in the upper right corner. If I am staying online, I then open Internet Explorer again. If I have been shopping online, I do all of the above, AND clear history. Tami

In 2003, AOL signed a seven-year contract with Microsoft to use Internet Explorer layout engine in their products and as such AOL Explorer uses this engine. Because of this, users can use AOL Explorer to download and install updates from Microsoft Update. However, unlike Internet Explorer, AOL does not use the new Live Search as the default search engine. The future of further AOL-branded browsers once the contract expires is unsure.

Maybe something has changed and it's different now. Interesting reading anyway.

Sue. There is no reason why you can't download the AOL browser. It won't do anything to your other browsers.

My advise would be to have your friend go to the menu bar, click on the 'Help' button. scroll down to 'About IE/AOL or AOL/IE (don't know which one) and tell you which one that she/he has. Download that version of the browser and you should be able to help the friend better. Of course, sitting right next to the friend would be the best way to go about it but that might be an inconvenience. Good luck.

have you considered using one of the free remote access programs to just be able to take control of her pc and do the work for her while she can sit on her side and watch? I installed one on my sisters computer so we can do it that way since she is in a different state. I used the free team viewer

Raven, I imagine she would have remote access in her Windows XP as I do, right? I've considered remote access but would be a little afraid if things maybe got goofed up for her later on....and then us maybe both regretting it.

Yep, side by side would be best. I imagine the remote access might make her even more nervous than us talking or working side by side. The other night she told me she had to go and get another Pepsi she was so nervous. She had been cut down to just one a day but I drove her to drinkin. I too can relate needin' another tall Pepsi on the rocks.

I would use something like teamviewer over the one in xp, much easier to use, you could be on the phone as you do it with her so she knows what is happening.
