Old PC, monitor blank

I did a search and also scanned several pages of threads, but I didn't find anything on this subject. I'm hoping it's something simple and stupid on my part. Anyway, I'm trying to boot up our old PC (two computers back); it's a Gateway running Win 98, I believe. Sorry I don't have all the specs here; can check them at home if necessary. I'm just trying to boot it up and check for items we may want to print off, then delete everything before recycling it. The computer turns on, lights on the keyboard flash briefly, monitor is on, but there is nothing on the monitor. If I try the Caps Lock or Num Lock on the keyboard, those lights don't light. Acts like it's in sleep mode, but I can't get any response. I have tried with a different keyboard, mouse and monitor. This machine was working fine up until we stopped using it. I even tried a "Universal Boot Disk" that I found, nothing. If I can't get it to boot, I'll take out the hard drive before I recycle it. Thanks for any suggestions.
