Video card or monitor going?

I turn computer on in morning and I do not get normal blue screen welcome and traveling dot etc. Just solid blank black screen. I do get the audio da-de-da part of normal loading. After 10 minutes looking at the blank black screen the screen saver comes on. Click off screen saver and there is my normal desktop icons and a normal working machine. Now the 10 minute delay has slowly grown out to 50 minutes now.If I go to start>restart as if I were installing a program I get a normal shut-down - startup blue screen welcome etc.Computer is compaq 3 yr. old 2.16 GHZ Win XP Home 512 MB DDR 80 GB HD 52GB free space integrated via unichrome graphics card. Monitor is CRT 6years old. Something is slowly going out as you can see. Any comments and suggestions appreciated. Its going to stay on 24/7! hughe

It sounds like neither monitor or video card to me.
First thing I'd do is set screensaver to "None" right click on desktop/ propeties/screensaver.
For some reason windows is loading slowly, could be a corrupted program trying to load in the background at startup.
Click start/run/type> msconfig and under the startup tab, see if there are any programs that you don't need running and uncheck them.
If you have the XP CD, click start/run/type> sfc /scannow, *note the space between c and /
If worse comes to worse, you may have to do a repair install of XP, but it could be something as simple as your anti-virus program or some other program is messed up and not loading correctly at startup.

Have you done the simple stuff.. open the case follow the vga cable to the card and unplug replug it in.. same for the cable from the computer to the monitor.. unconnect/reconnect. Take a good look while its apart for corrosion or signs of burn marks.

Otherwise it does sound like the monitor is capooping out to me. I'd carry it to my neighbors house or computer shop while cold and see if it does the same slow cold start there.

Bernie you can indeed change the boot order in the BIOS, remember to press F10 when you exit to save the settings. After you can return to the BIOS and reset it to the original drive if you wish. Your video card is likely built into the motherboard, very few mass produced computers have separate video cards now. If you have access to a monitor there should be a spot to connect it to the computer to verify that the video card is working or not. You might Google 'video card stability test' and select a program to download and test the card, there are plenty of them out there. You mention that the problem computer is old. Perhaps the vents and fan are bunged up with dust bunnies creating a heat issue? Have you tried clearing this out? If you made note of the hard drive you could visit the manufacturers site and run some tests on it perhaps.

Go to the Newegg site linked below, they have them listed from about $33. You could Google craigslist or kijii for your area and check out the computer and/or computer components sections for a used video card. Yes if you buy a better video card you will no doubt get a better picture. But as was noted above, no point spending money on a 5 year old computer if you plan on replacing it in the near future.

The last I heard was it takes $100 to fix a monitor no matter what is wrong. With today's lower prices on better monitors it might be wise to buy a new one and get a full warranty. You would have it ready for when you decided to buy a new tower too.
