Hi,

Thank you so much for your help. I hate to be so neurotic about this, but I really would hate to ruin my new bathroom. Anyway, here is my question, when I've talked to Aquamix Technical support (at least twice now), they recommend the Aquamix Sealer's Gold (water based sealer) for my marble bathroom. But when I read about their Aquamix Solvent based sealer, it says "superb water resistance". Which is pretty much what you said.

When going to the tile store, I saw my fabricator and asked him which sealer to use in my bathroom. He also stated the water-based Aquamix Gold. When I asked him why, he said that the solvent based would leave streaks on the marble.

I'm guessing that you've used Solvent based sealers on Calcutta Marble withou a problem. Is there a problem or will there be a problem on my marble if I switch from a water based sealer to a solvent based sealer?

Last question (I think!), upon cleaning the bathroom floor I found other grey spots. They were in areas that I probably dripped water getting out of the shower or using the vanity. What would you recommend to get rid of those spots before I seal it? Aquamix suggested a Nanoscrub product they sell. Any thoughts on that?

Also, Custom Builders (the company that makes TileLab) just bought Aquamix. I confirmed this with one of Aquamix's Technical Assistance people.

If those spots weren't just because the stone had moisture in it that could dry out, I'd go with Aquamix's recommendation.

As for Custom Building Products buying out Aquamix, this is the first I've heard of it, but it doesn't surprise me. Back about a year ago, a very close friend of mine whose family owns Laticrete said they were negotiating to do the same thing with Miracle, or atleast bring them in as a subsidiary.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your help and patience! I finally talked to someone at Aquamix that agreed the solvent based sealer would be better then Aquamix Gold (water based). She also didn't think putting the solvent based sealer over what is left of the TileLab (water based sealer) would be a problem. That the solvent based would work thru the water based.

She also recommended using a product called "Aquamix Renue" before sealing. As that will help to get out any calciium deposits, hard water stains and minize the etching or spots.

I appreciate your recommendation regarding the best type of sealer to use. What I couldn't understand is on the Aquamiz web page they state the solvent based sealer has "superb water resistance". So why would they recommend the water based sealer Aquamix Gold? Maybe they work on commision!

P.S. Maybe the reason Custom Builders purchased Aquamix is because they wanted a product for the high end market that is sold in tile stores (Aquamix). Especially since they had the low end covered with TileLab sold at HD (like Delta and Brizo or Moen and Showplace in the faucet market). I just hope the quality of Aquamix doesn't come down to TileLab's level!

If you have the elevation to add the required thickness, floating a floor will give you a much more stable installation. Especially for 18" travertine. If you do go with cement board, make sure they thinset the cement board down to the subfloor. The thinset prevents any vertical movement of the cement board by filling any gaps between the ply and the cement board. It's not really intended to bond them together, it's more of a gap-filler. The fasteners will bond them together. Thinset between the cement board and the plywood is not optional. It's mandatory. 18" travertine is an animal all by itself. I'd much prefer that to go over a mud bed. If not, then you need to really look at the floor structure. I'd want two layers of plywood (3/4" subfloor covered with 3/8" or 1/2" ply underlayment) and then a membrane like Ditra instead of cement board. The larger the tile, the better shape your floor needs to be. No humps and dips, it needs to be pretty flat or the larger tiles can rock over any humps and you;ll end up with lippage between adjacent tiles. When installing natural stone versus ceramic or porcelain, the better shape your floor needs to be. Natural stone requires a stronger floor with less flex, especially for travertine. Installing 18" travertine directly to an existing plywood subfloor that was under carpet? Do that and you could very well end up with little bitty bits of travertine as the tile cracks over time. If you can't get the large format 18" travertine installed correctly, it might be better to move to a smaller format natural travertine tile or to a porcelain travertine look-a-like.

As usual, My brother Bill has been quicker than me to respond... I'm going to very respectfully disagree with my Bro - on the 511 thingy, mainly because I have never tried the impregnator...I'm sure if I actually took the time to compare, I may find what Bill is saying is right on (and it probably is anyways) HA! I have just never had ANY failures using 511 Porous Plus - and so I don't have to fix what aint broke... I've never had a problem with it - BUT - I haven't installed that much Carrara slabs in Kitchens (like NEVER out here in AZ), but tons in baths and lavs... as for the GQ stuff - I have not tried it - again, I'm pretty set in my ways after using 511 Porous Plus for close to 15 years.... OK, OK - I'll TRY the impregnator Bill!!!! ;-) then maybe I'll see your side of this from a different point of view.... ha! kevin Kevin m. One coat of enhancer will usually darken the stone to a point, and that's as dark as it'll get. So if you want to enhance prior to your installer getting ahold of it, that should be fine. I could buy the lighter shade of pencils if they too will darken. I'd say that'd be the prudent thing to do. One other thing-- Rather than going ahead and doing the enhancement yourself, or anything else for that matter, it might be a good idea to have your installer come over, and go over the concerns you have with him.

I've yet to find a tumbled stone that ISN'T suitable for a backsplash. AS for the difference, tumbling implies a finish that can be found on many different types of natural stone. One would be marble. Another would be some of the many limestones, including travertine. I've also used tumbled slate before. I guess both have to be sealed before installation. That depends. If you're going to do the installation yourself, then yes, it's a real good idea. If you have a pro installing it, I'd leave it to his discretion. Many pros (including myself) would rather grout the stone "raw", and then it would get sealed afterward. So long as the installer realizes that whichever way he goes, that stone better be nice and clean when it's done.
