Help with GardenWeb - stay logged in forever - please?

Is there a way to stay logged into Gardenweb for more than

1 day, 1 session , or one short period? It seems when I

come back after a few hours I'm logged out. It's not a

big deal but it would help to remain logged in.

I'm a user on 20 or more forums such as

Fatwallet, AVS forums, and many more popular and large

forum sites. I can't think of one of them that logs me

out when I leave except under these circumstances:

I'm the only one who uses or has access to my computer.

Because this means it's secure it also means no one besides

me will be posting using my login. Why make the computer

force me to make more work?

1. If I choose it in my profile. Frankly I can't think of

any sites that have this option but if it's there I have

it shut off.

2. If my computer is logged in with another name, then

it makes sense to logoff the previous user

3. If I have chosen to log out for this one session then

of course I should be allowed to log out

4. If there's a serious glitch where there's a suspicios

activity then of course it makes sense to protect accounts

by requiring re-login.

I had some other great ideas but for some reason when I

came to write them a few days ago I could not log in. The

system was not accepting logins... thus I wasted not only

time trying to log in but lost some good ideas to share

because I was not able to be continually logged in.

Losing my chance to share information because I was not

continually logged in is yet another reason to have the

choice, opportunity, to stay logged in.

Even Ebay who's the most anal retentive , allows full day

logins. Maybe GW allows full day, I don't know. But

I would suggest that we be allowed to remain logged in for

as long as we desire.. unless it becomes a problem.

Most people on GW are responsible adults who have control

of their computer. IF the choice were made to allow longer

login times then I suggest warning adults that they're

responsibile for whatever is written on their login.

I realize many families might be on Gardenweb. Thus having

an auto logout after x minutes of no-activity would fix

the problem of the kids getting on and making 'fun' with

grandma's computer.

I'm more sensitive about how much time we all spend on

the computer. It's supposed to be our master not our

slave. oops.. did I mean to say that? did you even

notice that ?

If not then have a checkup from the neckup. :)

Interesting that you report that you do not remain logged on. I've been logged on this system since the first of the year, and the one at home since last Saturday following my system maintenance.

Luther, as discovered by Tom somewhere in the posts above, only 20 characters are displayed. In yours, the number "9" is the 20th character, so the "b" is truncated and not displayed. You could abbreviate "zone" to the letter "z" like I did in mine in order to get your zone 9b to properly display. Carol

I suspect your regulator is freezing due to moisture inside of it which freezes the regulator orifice over. To fix this the gas company would 1) replace the regulator and 2) add some methanol to the tank. The lines themselves will not freeze over but the regulators will, not very common but it does happen.

but prof. nice guy didn't ask about staying or leaving... exactly. He said he wanted to meet a woman who was more fun *& that his therapist encouraged him to do so*. which sounds like a lie. In fact, his initial post reads a little like a singles ad ("my sisters-in-law describe me as 'funny & sweet'", "I want to meet a woman who likes to laugh", etc) His request for 'advice' reads a lot like he's fishing for permission/approval/blessing,("it would be nice to keep my marriage but be emtionally close to someone, too") Snort! & his statement that his wife is willing to have sex without emotional involvement but he wants the involvement sounds really really strange, since it's backwards to what usually happens (woman wants emotional closeness, man willing to have sex without it). like he made it up & he's seeing what response it'll get. One of the worst experiences of my life was many years ago, when I was young & inexperienced & a married man caused me a lot of aggravation, but, as a result, my "married man on the prowl" detector still works pretty well:. I had been dating this guy for several weeks when I learned that he was married. only, as he said, since it didn't have anything to do with what went on between us, he didn't think he needed to mention it. He saw nothing wrong with lying to me, lying to his wife, complicating my life, his wife's life, his children's lives, heck, he wasn't worried about complicating *anybody's* life, as long as he could have dinner/clean house/charming children...& dates. It was degrading to be manipulated & lied to like that, it was mortifying to discover that I was the "other woman", & it was humiliating to extricate myself from the situation & answer the questions my friends asked about the "new guy" I had been so happy about. but the guy sort-of mentally shrugged & decided that I was just as crazy/needy/irrational as his wife, *since I was having a good time*... until I found out about this little bit of (irrelevant & superfluous) information. This is a married man on the prowl, looking for approval/justification, & he posted this to see what kind of objections he'd get, so he can refine his approach to the next "woman who likes to laugh" that he runs into in the real world. betcha.

I've made this suggestion in the past, but I still think it's a valid one (although not to me at this point in my life). When we are on the main page of the cooking forum, there is a link for related forums. I think if "kitchens" was considered related and you could navigate back and forth with the two forums, that would make life easier for many people. Many people migrate from "kitchens" to "cooking" and still go back to give advice once their new kitchen is done. Also, I think it would be helpful if a thread indicated if anybody posted to it since you last visited. I know the new email notification helps that now, but there may be a thread that I am following but haven't added my two cents yet; however I would still like to know others' contributions. On the Pinterest/FB issue, I am totally addicted to Pinterest. I use it for many things, including recipes. However, I use a completely different identity because I don't want to connect it to FB. None of my friends or family need to know I just copy others' ideas and I'm really not that creative ;) I have posted so much personal information on here at a very difficult time in my life. I knew it would always be out there for the world, but it wasn't something my friends/family could easily stumble upon, so I was a little more free with my thoughts. I think of the conversation side of this as a place to b*tch out my sister when I'm mad at her or just cry with my cyber friends. I don't want that to link up to FB. Those are some of the people I'm b*tching about or am mad at. ;)

I was thinking about your concern. Do you have your browser configured to delete cookies every time it closes? This would require signing in on each visit.

I was thinking the same thing, but that wouldn't explain being able to stay logged on to other sites. Might your browser be clearing cookies except for those that you have specified to be exceptions, and GW isn't listed as one of your exceptions?

What browser are you using and what operating system?

I would add GW to you safe list or accepted list in which ever browser you are using.
I stay logged in for weeks at a time till I reboot, it will have me log in again however if I have logged in from one of my other computers then come back to my desktop and go to GW.

When you log in there is a box to check to be remembered. There was a time here when you were never logged out. From time to time I have had to log back in at this site but haven't had to do so in a few weeks or more.

Thanks for the great ideas. I use Opera 9.x and I'm sure
that my cookies are set to not be deleted when
logging out. After all the other sites I use have no
problems.

But since so many, well four, mention that it could be
something on my side I will have a good look and report
back.

I have this problem here as well. I'm sure Firefox is not set to delete cookies on closing because I have no problem at other forums but I have to logon to Garden Web multiple times a day....I do check the box that says save this information on my computer. It has been this way for me here as long as I can remember. Had same problem using IE and Win 98SE.

Are you using "CA" security? If so, that may be your problem, it was for me a while back. For some reason it did not allow me to login on a site I had used for years.

Got rid of CA security and now works like a charm.

How about updating to Opera 10.0? It's what I use here, and I seldom have to log in except after I do a "cleaning" job.

The same problem cropped up for me - suddenly I had to log on each time I visited Gardenweb. Zep came to the rescue and provided the following link. I checked the settings, changed them as recommended (don't know how they got changed to start with), and the problem was solved. Maybe it will help you. - June
