GardenWeb needs your feedback!

Hi everyone,

As you may have noticed, we've been sprucing up the site a bit. Among other things, we've added new ways to upload photos and email notifications of post replies. We are still cleaning out cobwebs and weeding some areas of the site, but we are also working on some bigger projects like a better search engine (yay!) and a mobile app. We'd also like to get some feedback from you. What enhancements or additions would you like to see? What do you love? What do you hate? Think big and small!

We can't promise the moon, but please know that we will read and consider every one of your ideas and suggestions. We appreciate your loyalty and dedication to our site and we know how important your community is to you. Help us make it even better!

Please use this post to offer your feedback. But, as always, you are welcome to contact me directly by clicking on my profile page.

Best regards,

Tamara Amey

Oh...I forgot about the registration dump....for me it happens every time I log off the browser.
AdBlock Plus eh? Free? On the web...Tucows?
    Thanks!

Thanks, Pat, I keep forgetting about that broken link, until I click it and it doesn't work.

I do try to be welcoming to everyone new, but some people will post and then go away. In some instances we just aren't what they are looking for and in other instances there are personality conflicts. It's just like real life, some people get along and some don't and not everyone is going to like everyone else.

I think conflict is normal, to a degree. My prior boss called the internet "the Millenium Maltshop". It's where people go to meet other people and it's not always going to be pretty.

I do like the format the way it is and have seen a couple of others where the prior posts are repeated and quoted endlessly. I just give up and go away, it's too cumbersome to bother with.

Nancy, I'm so glad you said that, I thought I was the only person that couldn't find anything I was looking for on Pinterest. It's a whole bunch of information but no way to find anything specific.

If there were a filter for regional advice only I wouldn't use it. I enjoy hearing from people everywhere on a subject. No, of course, some of the information from CA or FL or TX isn't relevant to me but I still like knowing what their growing conditions and challenges, and their solutions to them, are in comparison to mine. It's how we learn new things about each other and roses. Many a warm climate grower has given me good advice on a variety of subjects. And during this past scorching hot drought of a summer I did use some of their tactics in keeping my roses hydrated. You never know when a piece of information you previously thought didn't pertain to you will come in handy! Knowledge of any kind is always a good thing! The wisdom to know what is usable for you and what isn't comes with time and experience. But if you never receive the knowledge in the first place you've already lost out. To all my warm climate rose friends, please feel free to give me your advice, help and answers on any of my posts! And I hope that you don't mind my sharing my cold climate experiences on yours. If so, my apologies in advance.

Hi everyone! You asked and we listened. Today we are very excited to be debuting our newest feature -- post editing! To use this feature, go back to the post you wish to correct and you'll find the link under the 'My Clippings' links on the right side of the page. I want to give a special shout out to all the testers who tried to break the editing tool. ;) Your feedback was insightful and invaluable. Thank you! You may have also noticed that we adjusted the login cookie awhile back so that you should not have to login repeatedly. Stay tuned -- we have more cool things in the works! As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Best regards, Tamara

I agree, we need to be able to EDIT, for a few minutes after we post. Though I usually catch spelling and grammer in the preview page, it would be nice to be able to do it after we post, too.

    Can't wait for the app.

    Thanks

Adblock is pretty wonderful. If you use Hulu you will need to disable it for that site. And possibly others. Otherwise it does a great job of eliminating ads. I find that it occasionally slows down a page, though.

I have avoided Pinterest, though I have many friends who love it. I don't need another rabbit hole of distraction. :)

As I recall one of the benefits of paying for the forums was that the ads went poof.

    Am I wrong?

I suspect the logging off issue has to do with a browser setting, like cookies or something. I rarely get logged off on either my work or home computers, or phone.

The improvements thus far have been excellent. Spellcheck would be a nice addition. As would a mobile app.

I think the forum format is one of the best on the internet.

Barnmom, no, you are not wrong. It was pay $15 or be bombarded with ads. We payed the $15. :) Were it not for AdBlockPlus I would have been gone from GW a long time ago. :(

Please excuse me if this is a dumb question. I'm not very computer savvy. I tried Pinterest early this spring for a few days. My anti-virsus software was quite active and I received multiple pages from it saying, "WHOA!, are you sure you want to go there?" I decided that it was not bright of me to go clicking around places where I had no idea what the site really was, who posted it, etc. It seemed like just asking for computer problems. So, I quit looking at Pinterest. I never "joined".

So, my question is...by GW allowing connection to Pinterest does that increase our chances that those "Whoa!" places will infect our computers here? So far, I've never had a problem from GW. But, the more interaction seems like an opportunity for more infections.

    Am I worrying needlessly?

    Thanks.

    /tricia

Linda, you can get AdBlockPlus through your browser. I don't know what Tucows is. In Firefox, under the Tools menu, you see "Get Add-Ons." (This may be a little different if you have a Windows machine.) AdBlockPLus is a Firefox extension, but I'm sure there are versions for other browsers.

I periodically noodle around Pinterest; I don't see the attraction enough to join.

A particular dish caught my attention and everytime I clicked on it, it would take me to endless sites, with the pic there, but never to the actual blog to get the recipe.

I personally find the site boring, and see the same endless things on the main page. Yet again, another hair braid, nail paint, or fashion, or baby. The food and drink tab is endless, with other stuff that don't even belong there.

For me the point of Pinterest is to gather the things I'm already finding, not to find new things there. It's a pinboard. Especially good if you have a project like a new kitchen. But also great for people like me who are constantly seeing images on the web that we want to save. Pinterest is a place to put the images, with links, instead of having to save them on the computer or in "cloud" software. (Of course it's still good to save anything very important to you, because the link can go away.)

But I am concerned about the GardenWeb - Pinterest connection that was raised on another thread. Since any image can be pinned, that means the family photos we share on the Forum can end up on Pinterest. Obvious, I guess, but I hadn't thought of it. We've become less cautious because lots of pics are already on Facebook. But apparently you can't pin from Facebook, so if I put photos here I am changing the situation. Have to talk to my daughter about this before posting any more cute granddaughter pics. With Google image search it's possible that anything might be traced.

Even without Pinterest pictures get pirated. About 4 years back I posted a picture of my hand in front of a leaf on a particular hosta, to show how big the leaves were....posted it on the hosta forum....and forgot about it.
A couple of years later I was browsing for hosta from an on-line seller....and there was the picture of my hand in front of the hosta leaf. I emailed and told the seller he was more than welcome to use my picture in his ads, but it would have been polite to ask first!
Ann T has had her pictures pirated any number of times.
So even before Pinterest, it's been happening!

Tamara, one point about appearance. The solid wide band of color at the top of the page -- or is it filled with ads for those without blocking? -- is one of the more hideous colors on earth, a mixture of olive green and pea soup and mustard.

Cloudy_christine, I think the band of yucky color is a holdover from the Spike days. But I'm not sure. I don't think iVillage changed much except to add their logo.

I would like to see a site entitled "Save Some Pennies".
    Which would incluce money saving tips, formulas, etc. Such as: make your make your own face cleansers and and hand cleaners. Put a neat patch over a hole in your sweat shirt,stretch that pound of hamburger, make your own mouth wash and "neddi-pot", and the list goes on;

posieh, it's already here. Look under other forums and you have "Money Saving Tips."

    cc,

I don't know how to do bold or italics. Doesn't one have to use html code, or something. I'd like buttons to click.

    /t

Tricia, it's pretty easy. I remember I always admired that other people could put book titles in italics, LOL. Then Granjan told me how to. It is html but it's very easy.
To get italics, type before the word and after the word, with no spaces. For bold and underline, replace the i with b or u. Those are the ones I know by heart, but you can find all of the code with a web search.

Oh WOW, CC! Now, I'm a techie! Thanks so much!! I always envisioned 27 character codes to be memorized for each function.

Does that work with a Mac, too?

A couple days ago when I first saw his thread, I thought of a suggestion but didn't have time to post. Now, I don't remember what it was, of course.

I like Gardenweb pretty much as it is. At first I thought, well, people can edit during the preview, but now I understand what y'all were talking about, being able to edit a post after it's been posted. I don't think I'd worry about doing that myself, as I have limited time at the computer and would probably spend that time reading on in the post, or reading other posts, rather than going back to edit what I've already posted. But that's just me.

What I'm wondering is if our pictures from Facebook are going to start showing up here, since they're connected. I guess it doesn't necessarily matter, other than I have my Facebook account limited, supposedly, to just family and friends. I've seen websites that have Facebook accounts, such as local news websites, that have a comment section at the end of their stories, and people's Facebook picture shows up with their comments. I don't know how I'd feel about that, but I don't think I'd like it.

    Sally

Sally, I use a Mac. Html is the always the same, as far as I know. The keyboard shortcuts (like the ones that make accents and special characters) are different.

    Tricia, you're welcome. Italicize away!

Bring back this guy. Oh look! He's happy to see you!

Ability to edit already submitted posts is high on many GWers list of suggestions. That could pose a problem though when a previous post is modified, making subsequent references to it invalid. Kinda difficult to explain. Do you see what I mean?

I have been a member of a forum where previous posts were editable but, IIRC, it included a way of documenting the uneditted version. As I recall, it was somewhat messy.

I think it is preferable to put up with the inconvenience of no editting in order to keep everything totally chronological. Better to develop a habit of proofreading before hitting the submit button.

Jim, most of us who mentioned editing seem to want it to be open for a very short period, and would agree with you about not wanting to change history. For me, it appeals because after I correct the six typos I see in my post, I discover number seven permanently on the forum. When the typo looks like a real mistake and not a typo, it drives me nuts. But yes, I could just look at the preview more carefully.

Just now I found myself unregistered again, although my browser has stayed open.

"...open for a very short period..."

That might work if it was a very short period, maybe a minute or two.

In this medium however, typos are inevitable and everyone tends to be understanding about it. As someone (Annie?) said, things like "crab cakes" can yield some entertaining results.

I have to chime in to say I pretty much like GW the way it is. I started following GW in 2002, going through Spike years & paying my $15 a couple of times, so I have some history with it. I quit for a few years after my kitchen remodel, then came back in '08 or early '09. The CF & the Kitchen Table are my two daily Internet musts.

I also think the problem with fractions needs to be fixed - it's quite an irritant. The photo icon is great - sometimes I open a post with it that I may not have otherwise.

I love CF. Though I don't post a lot I enjoy the sharing & camaradie tremendously, have learned so much from the members & have actually tried many recipes that I otherwise would have not dared or wouldn't have thought to be interested in.

    P.S. I'm still willing to pay $15 a year.

How about getting rid of the lesser used forums? I was just on the "cooking for a week" forum and there is not one thread on the 1st page that was started recently. They are all very old threads that keep getting posted to. I won't be going back there.

There are others like that. If someones 1st time on gardenweb is going to one of those seldom if ever used forums they may never come back and look at the other forums.

I say really clean house and just keep the forums that get traffic. Some ditch and some combine.

    Thanks, Christine!

Yes, I wish the forum would fix fractions, and other punctuation marks.

    Sally

Oh, I just thought of something else. Fix the double, even triple posting. I've seen this on more than one Gardenweb forum, where someone's post to a thread is repeated two or even three times in a row. I'm sure it's not the poster's fault. What's up with that, anyway?

    Sally

I also posted on the Quilting Forum that I am NOT a fan of Facebook or Pinterest.

I suggest an OPT-OUT feature to allow those of us who Do Not Want our posts and/or pictures to be linked to FB & Pinterest.

I would like the ability to edit mistakes, or errors, but editing to change the context of the post is not something I want to see.

I also like the simplicity of GW.

I do not want flashing or other visually distracting features. Some posters already use them and I hate it!

Better search engine would be very nice!

    Thank you!

Duplicate posts bug me too, especially when they are mine. I think the software makes it difficult to double post deliberately but it happens accidentally all the time.

    Jim

"I say really clean house and just keep the forums that get traffic. Some ditch and some combine."

This should be done with great care. My favorite forum is one which gets comparatively little traffic because it is highly specialized. But the quality of the content is high. True experts in their field contribute regularly. There is very little fluff -- threads like "what is your favorite variety of this vegetable?" or "what should I plant this year?". The discussions are on a level found nowhere else on the web, so far as I know.

Jim - You're the original master of multiple posts! But you're not alone anymore by any stretch. It's happened several times to me in the past, though only when posting from my phone. I rarely post from the phone anymore for that reason, but if I do I'm sure to shut down the browser completely and restart the internet before doing anything else. I wonder if phones and other mobile devices are the main culprit.

Jimster - which forum is that? I would be very interested in checking it out.

"Jim - You're the original master of multiple posts!"

    I was hoping that wasn't noticed. :-(

Hey Tamara! Thanks for the new feature. Now when I click on a link, it opens in a new window. I love it. What an improvement.

Pam, I remember that dog. Where was it used? That's what I can't recall.

    Eileen

He used to be pictured on the page that lists all the THS forums. It said "Look! He's happy to see you."

I've made this suggestion in the past, but I still think it's a valid one (although not to me at this point in my life). When we are on the main page of the cooking forum, there is a link for related forums. I think if "kitchens" was considered related and you could navigate back and forth with the two forums, that would make life easier for many people. Many people migrate from "kitchens" to "cooking" and still go back to give advice once their new kitchen is done.

Also, I think it would be helpful if a thread indicated if anybody posted to it since you last visited. I know the new email notification helps that now, but there may be a thread that I am following but haven't added my two cents yet; however I would still like to know others' contributions.

On the Pinterest/FB issue, I am totally addicted to Pinterest. I use it for many things, including recipes. However, I use a completely different identity because I don't want to connect it to FB. None of my friends or family need to know I just copy others' ideas and I'm really not that creative ;)

I have posted so much personal information on here at a very difficult time in my life. I knew it would always be out there for the world, but it wasn't something my friends/family could easily stumble upon, so I was a little more free with my thoughts. I think of the conversation side of this as a place to b*tch out my sister when I'm mad at her or just cry with my cyber friends. I don't want that to link up to FB. Those are some of the people I'm b*tching about or am mad at. ;)

Lori, I share your feelings about not linking my Facebook book page with GW.

I still go back to Kitchens to chime in once in awhile. Mostly I say "do not get a tile floor."

What about spammers? I don't see any here but its getting out of hand on kitchens. Is there a moderator who can spot and delete these?

About spam, simply copy the url of the spam post and use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page to report it. Your report should also contain the url of the "My page" of the spammer.

Just report those two url's and Tamara is great about zapping away the spam.

    Best regards,
    Tamara

    Thanks Tamara!

Sushipup - You mention using the "Contact Us" link for reporting spam, but a while back I noticed that you report them all in the Test Forum. Is one method preferred over the other?

Would it be possible to have some sort of 'stickied' posts? Posts that are either at the top of the forum or in an accessible area. One place might be in the FAQs. Or even a new area called something else. I am thinking of a way to have things like the cookalong links more easy to find. The FAQs are great but lose information like links and pictures.

FOAS, I do both. I use the "Contact us" to report it, and then copy it to the Test forum, so I can go back and check on it.

(Sorry to be so slow in response!)

I suggest the return of a teacup-like policy. The Lou's and Linda's of the forum might deserve more than a slap on the wrist at times, but not a life sentence.

    (minor grammatical edit)
