Hotmail locks up when there are no ads

I thought I had heard about everything weird with computers in the last 20 years but I am stumped. I have a 7 year old Dell Pentium, getting service thru Comcast and I have several e-mail accounts. That started when MSN started making changes and they locked me out of my original account with new password requirements. They finally reopened the original account with a new password but I kept the new hotmail since everyone already had the new address. Now they have started making changes again and the new and old MSN keep locking up. I finally figured out it happens when the ad banner over the Windows screen doesn't have an ad in it. This is very frustrating since I can't tell in advance when the banner is going to be blank or running and it only takes one keystroke to stop everything. I am willing to let the 510 previous messages go if I have to but would rather not. No spam on the new account. Where do I go from here? Sandy

Try a different browser?

Sounds like you've a advertising block or perhaps have disabled or broken FLASH. Wouldnt hurt to go find Adobe Flash Uninstaller and uninstall Flash and then reinstall the most current version.

I might experiment by temporarly putting MSN.com, Hotmail.com, and Live.com into my Internet Options, Security, Trusted Sites list. As those are the keystone url's for Hotmail.

If you are using IE, while at Hotmail,,, at the bottom of the browser window on the status bar,,, there may be an small eyeball icon there with a red x on it.,, perhaps double click that to see what might be being blocked.

You'll also need to accept cookies from each of the urls I mentioned above.

I want to caution you fellers about something you have to be aware of, when checking the oil in those small engines, and even in yer car or truck. When you pull out the dip-stick to check the oil, it may have oil showing on it, usually very high on the stick--so, you think--it has plenty of oil, and you put the stick back in and go about whatever you are going to do. BUT!! The oil in the engine, which splashed up on the dip-stick, does not run off and leave the stick clean!! When you pull it out to check it, and even if the engine hasn't been run for a week or two, or even longer, the oil will show full, or even higher! You MUST wipe it, then put it back in and pull it out again to get the true reading! I think the preceding fact is what gets most folks in trouble, with blown-up engines.

Well, you had best take RCBE's advice, and trash that engine, or at least, seek professional help, to find out if it is rebuildable! Which i sincerely doubt! It will probably be cheaper to buy a new engine, read the instructions fully, and install it in your machine. BUT!! Depending on the age of your machine--it might be better to just buy a new machine, and get a fresh start. And--definitely read the book that comes with it, and follow the rules contained therewith! What caused the problem with the old engine, happens to a machine when proper care and feeding of the engine isn't followed. Also allowing it to set around for a long time, causes it, too. Plus if you didn't religeously check the oil, and change it every spring or fall, could have caused the problem. When the engine is not used for a while, things happen--the oil leaks out, or gets contaminated by water, or gasoline, the carb gets gummy inside, the float sticks open and floods the engine block with gasoline, and ya try to start, if it only runs a little bit--it will probably up-chuck its guts---and there ya will be! Right where ya are now!

Kateskouros, I think I've got a list somewhere that has them all. However, eventually it turned out that as I finessed my ad blocking system that I was missing a bunch of them so could no longer keep track. BUT the ones I could see? I never remember who they are until I see their name somewhere else. For the rest of my life I won't be able to tell you who had the most annoying GW ad... but for that same life every time someone mentions AngiesList I'll think OMG that was the most annoying ad. Somewhat like the groupon superbowl ads...

I am in the same boat as @Adam Francis, @nancyperezrod, @Chad Lang, @Joel Newton and possibly others, with a Jeld-Wen Single Patio Door, and an Emtek Multipoint lock (see pic) with shoots on the top (head) and the foot (sill). The only difference is that it is only ONE swing out patio side door. I also spoke to the Tech team at The Connectedshop, who are amazing with their customer service. After sending them all my measurements, they spent a good hour explaining to me why none of their smart products will work on my door :-( The reason I am sharing all this is that I am based in San Jose, CA, and am hoping for a local locksmith who may be interested in doing the custom work that was suggested above by @eoc1212 and @Andrew Sobiev. I am willing to bite the bullet take out the Multipoint lock assembly, and put a regular smart Schlage solution which I have on other doors. However, need a Locksmith as I am not familiar with making holes and insertions through metal and wood. I hope to get a direct message soon from a locksmith, and I wish everyone else all the best! Thanks, Mikie. I did the browser thing. No help there. I haven't tried the Adobe uninstaller although I went in and removed anything and everything I don't use fairly often. I'll try the other suggestions, too. One thing that has been bothering me was how often I have been unable to get on the internet during the day recently with Explorer telling me either it couldn't show that page or that I wasn't connected. That sometimes happens here for no apparent reason but it has been bad recently. I asked my DH to see if there were any loose connections while I fixed dinner. I was still cooking when he came in and said that his wireless computer had been improperly closed down and was not in line when I was trying to get logged on. I had checked connectivity but it didn't say anything about the wireless so I didn't check. Grrrr. Thanks for the help. Sandy
