I just click close on the corner of the ad. Though it does get annoying!

For Adblock Plus users: Click on "Open Blockable items" from the ABP menu. Find the line that says:

http://www.gardenweb.com/MSNAdsiFrame/MSNAds.js

and right click it and block it.

Reload the page. Ad is gone.

Any difference between AdBlock Plus for Chrome or AdBlock - Google Chrome? Either one better than the other?

I installed AdBlock Google Chrome (for now) and it got rid of the Angie's List ad (I emailed GW about how annoying it is earlier as well). I can un-install and install Plus if it's better to have that. If both are equal, that's fine, too.

I work in digital advertising, and can tell you that this is considered very bad practice in the industry. Pop-up ads mostly annoy, and reflect poorly on the advertiser. No reputable company uses them anymore. And this one's particularly bad; it pops up again with each page refresh.
Anyway, Angie's List is a pretty useless service. You can find better recommendations if you look for forums that cover your area.

Doesn't anyone from GW actually look at these ads and realize how annoying they are before they're allowed on the site?

WORST AD EVER! Get rid of it or I won't be cruising this forum anymore, it's so annoying. The board doesn't work the same either. I'm so annoyed!

What also annoying is that (for me - on a Mac) when you click the X to get rid of the ad, it immediately takes you back to the top of the page even if you've scrolled down to the bottom, which adds another step in the procedure. It's like they're actually trying to make it difficult to navigate the threads.

If you have the "Adblock Plus" add-in with Firefox, you don't have to hack any code to block the ad.

1. With your mouse, hover over the ad you wish to block.

2. A small "tab" will pop up above the ad that says "Block"

   

Click "Block"
The ad should disappear.
You may have to refresh the page get rid of any residual blocks of color.

That's it!

any suggestions for how to get rid of it o a MAC? It's driving me batty!!

I installed the AdBlocker Plus with Chrome. The Angie's List ad is thankfully gone, as are all of the other ads. However, the little part that allows me to clip a post for later reference is gone too.

I suppose if I have to trade, the ad was worse than the clipping were good - I didn't use them often.

And many thanks to you as well. My firewall is interfering with the Ad-Block menu, I think--it took a long while just to figure that out, and is going to take more to fix it. Your fix worked a treat!

Re worst ad, I still think it was the dancing baby which was almost as big as the whole screen and bounced around so you couldn't close it, but this one was almost as bad! No "block" tab or anything.

Did any of you notice that it was basically inserting another whole forum page? I think that's how it got past the blockers.

Sigh.

If they'd pledge to have only passive ads to to the side, I'd agree to let them display...

Ditto! Ditto! Ditto! I hate that ad! I use a mac and have firefox. I can't get rid of it! It makes the whole site so cumbersome to use! Makes me want to not use the site until they they rid of it. So frustrating!

I personally LOVE this forum, I have learned so much form so many incredibly kind people, and I can't wait to share with you my new kitchen.

I am however, turned off by the large amount of EXTREMELY ANNOYING advertising.

This forum by far has the worst amount and most annoying advertising. Many times, I get frustrated and go away.

There is the top page advertiser who, while you are trying to read, the page auto scrolls. HATE IT. Then there is the annoying pop-up that follows you as you scroll, a gnat is friendlier.

Now ANGIE is being a PIA.

This really bothers me and forums owners need to understand it's not always the quantity of the ads it's the quality. It's this stuff that turns away lots of people.

I am a member of Angie's List and have found it to be a super resource for many kinds of contractors. And I HATE THIS NEW AD!! I emailed Angie's List to complain and will complain to GW, too.

Annoyed here, too. I've dropped a note to GW. In the meantime I was googling and found this - not sure it's working but no pop ups in the last two pages I opened.

These "pop-under" ads do not seem to be stopped by pop-up blockers. However, if you notice the URL for these ads, you will notice they are served by either OptMD or Tribal Fusion. Go to both www.optmd.com and www.exponential.com (the parent company of Tribal Fusion) and select Opt-Out of receiving pop-under ads from them. They will feed you some bull about how doing this will deprive you of your best web browsing experience, and that you will not be supporting the people providing you content, but I'm sure you'll feel sad for them. Don't forget you may need to stop your security software from erasing the cookies that contain your opt-out setting for these companies.

Agreed. So annoying. Do they realize they're not gaining anything by resorting to ads that only serve to frustrate people?!!? Shame on GW for making it impossible to escape this particularly bothersome ad. Grrrrr.......

If you've just installed Adblock Plus, you will need to tell it what to block. You can do it manually for each ad or you can "subscribe" to one of the "Filter Subscriptions" and they will catch most of them. (I subscribe to "EasyList(English)".) [

1. Click on the Adblock Plus stop sign

2. Select "Preferences"

3. Click the "Filters" menu item

4. Select "Add filter subscription"

5. Select a subscription from the drop down list.

Note, though, that sometimes you will have to manually block an item (like the current Angie's List ad). It should stay gone obnce you've "blocked" it...it has for me. [See my previous post in this thread.]

BTW...you may also have to do some manual changes to eliminate the "in-text links"...see the "Read Me" thread and scroll down to the "Eliminating Those Pesky Inline Links in Messages" topic for more information about it.

For Mac users: I was getting the annoyance across the bottom of my firefox browser (as opposed to up top or on the side) and it had no visible "block" tab the way Buehl photoed (how do you do *that* little add-the-photo trick? I need to dedicate some brain cells to html). But I just slowly hovered my mouse across the surface of the ad til it *found* it! The block tab was made to hide behind the start of the blue section of the ad at least on my screen. I pressed it and it's been banished so far.

Somehow I don't think complaining to them will make a whit of difference. They really are a creepy service. And as GW sustains software as old as the hills, I've a hard time envisioning them caring two hoots either, though evidently they've been impressionable in the past.

You know the funny thing? I heard somewhere that it turns out no one's ever really demonstrated that advertising is particularly effective anyway. Sort of a hard experiment to undertake, but it is an awesome amount of money devoted to such unproven techniques.

Oooh! Aliris, I already did Bob's manual CSS thing, but I'm so glad to know that there were a block flag on that ad. If I see something like it in the future I'll know how to look for it. Thanks!

Breezy, you're not stupid. These are mostly Windows solutions that have some Mac application, but aren't for iPad.

I don't know if you can block in iPad without jailbreaking it (that is, breaking into the programming so that your warranty is void).

Here's a review of some of the alternative browsers available in the app store. I think the last one also has ad blocking. Do a search of the app store to see if there are more. The problem is that these are said to block banner ads. I don't know if they'll get the hybrid ads, like Ad Block Plus for Firefox will on a full sized computer. It might be worth a buck to find out. (And, actually, I think that's all the jailbreak fixes do too...)

I removed AdBlock for Chrome last night (at least for now)--it was messing up video streaming on at least two sites/sources, and "changed" the way my remote access (for work) email loaded.

I really hope they do something about this ad, and soon.

Thank goodness it's gone, I only looked at three or four threads yesterday and gave up, that ad was way too annoying.

I had no issue using ad-block to clobber it the first time it showed up.

I sent an email to GW and so glad that they got rid of it. I wonder what over-reaching clause in their advertising contract permitted them to do so.

i'm still boycotting angie. and whoever it was last time...

I got rid of it with the Ad Blocker also. That seems to have gotten rid of all ads, which I really don't mind and sometimes click. Oh, well, no way I'm taking the chance of running into something like that thing again.

I think I've got a list somewhere that has them all.

However, eventually it turned out that as I finessed my ad blocking system that I was missing a bunch of them so could no longer keep track.

BUT the ones I could see? I never remember who they are until I see their name somewhere else.

For the rest of my life I won't be able to tell you who had the most annoying GW ad... but for that same life every time someone mentions AngiesList I'll think OMG that was the most annoying ad.

Somewhat like the groupon superbowl ads...
