desktop picture doesn't fill space

I had some difficulty erasing an advitorial page from my computer. Finally got it gone,now my desktop has a 4 inch band at the bottom. Everything else seems fine.

I have tried other pictures & rebooting. Also tinkered with

display settings. Nothing works.

I have Windows Vista with a 19 inch LCD widescreen monitor.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution to see if that helps? How about the monitor settings is there a setting to stretch the display?

Maybe right click desktop
choose 'Personalize
then 'Desktop Background
then scroll down to 'Wide Screen

and make sure the stretch button is selected;
probably do that with any pic but if the dimensions arent scaled right, it may become distorted.

Bang on, for me at least. The only addendum I would have to make to what I said has to do with keeping the box level over time. It strikes me that if you make it bottomless as I suggested, the soil will tend to sink, and may get under the edges, eventually lifting the box. To avoid that you'd have to anchor the box to the ground. This problem does not arise if you put a bottom (or partial bottom) on it - it will rot eventually, but so will the walls and fence and everything needs to be replaced eventually. I should actually know by now that Frankie is always right, but I'm a slow learner... if you do as she suggested and use a couple of large containers, of course rot would not be an issue. You would still have to compact the soil so they didn't list one way or the other over time (especially if you weed or replant in the ground around them). That can be tricky, so there is also an advantage to following the other part of her suggestion to use trellis structures that are not attached to the planter but rather stuck into it. Perhaps the best option is to take yet another hint from your picture: lay paving slabs into the bed in that area with the soil well-compacted underneath, and put the box on that. Plants can't root into the ground that way though, and will be more dependent on you for water. So if you tend to go away for long trips in the summer, not the best idea. KarinL

Annabeth - if it were only that easy, but I don't believe thorns will avert Miss Belle. She chewed down the Knock out with no problem and she chews old blue spruce branches that I can't even bear to hold in my bare hands! Ouch! I hope your pups continue to leave your roses alone. Good dogs! Roseseek, I know just the sort of dog you have. My late Giant Schnauzer was the same way, only she had the size and muscle to try to herd me indoors when she had had enough of the outside world. ;-) Hoovb, I've lived through some awful indoor destruction by puppies and young dogs. I think the most insulting was the Bouvier I had back in the 70's who ate the dog training book from the coffee table. So much for "Walkees!" (I just love your two dogs, BTW and could see myself forgiving them almost anything, even that kitchen molding.) Jeri, your long haired Dalmatians are beautiful - elegant dogs. I wish I was home with my dogs more than not, but someone has to work to buy the dog food here. ;-) All the same, even if I were at home as on the weekends, I could not stand to spend hours outdoors. No, 20 minutes or so of winter weather at a time is plenty for me, thank you. Meanwhile Forrest, the Labradoodle seems NEVER to get cold!

If you can get them, cuttings of pussy willows, forsythia, lilac and mock orange (Philadelphus) will root easily. See if you can beg some of these from friends who have them growing - buying pussy willow, lilac or forsythia stems from a florist is also an option. The willow will root in water - and anything with them will probably root - willows give off a substance that encourages rooting. Once the roots are several inches long, you can pot up or plant out the stems - depending on your weather - maybe cutting them back a bit so the baby roots have less to sustain - and plant them in their permanent position when they are a bit older. You can, also, just stick cuttings in the ground 4-6" deep, where you want them to grow, and have a good number root on their own, esp. if kept damp (but not soggy). If you use cuttings for a lot of the space, you will have more money to spend on a few flashier/evergreen/summer interest/etc. plants, to fill in any gaps. The main drawback to cuttings is that it will take a little longer for them to grow up and fill in than buying already established plants in pots, but since many of them began as cuttings, yours should look the same in a year or two, the moreso as they didn't have to adjust to life out of a pot. The one thing you will HAVE to do, no matter if you normally ignore that side of the yard, is water!!!!! Water according to how damp the soil is - insert a finger to the second knuckle and water if it is damp. Don't do it on a schedule, but on how the soil really feels. Mulching along the row, at least 4' wide, more if you can, will help with moderating the soil dryness. Watering will HAVE to be done for the first year, and somewhat the second year, esp. in a dry spell. After that, they can be on their own. Another thing to keep in mind is to consider how wide these shrubs will grow - DO NOT plant right on the property line. You neighbors have the right to prune back anything that sticks over their side of the line, and they might well do so. They don't have the right to kill the plants, but it might be hard to prove they did, if they are the sort to do so and if any die. Planting so the shrubs are totally on your property even after several years, seems the best way to go, to me. Regarding their dog, I have noticed over the years that dogs seem to prefer not to poop on their own property, so unless you ask them - AND they agree - to come over and pick up after their dog, you may be stuck with that nuisance. I agree, it is NOT nice, but it doesn't sound as though that aspect is going to be dealt with to your satisfaction.

The thing I would add is some lamps. I have four in my small living room alone. I love how they make a room feel so cozy with the mid level lighting. Maybe you could add a side table and a lamp on top on the sofa side that is empty? One thing I noticed is the gorgeous art and the lovely pewter green on your fireplace mantle. I might conider using the oranges and greens of those tones in your art and may a throw and a couple of pillows. That would tike both sides together so well! Room with lamps that make it seem cozy and warm.

it is always best to try to use a wallpaper pic that is sized for your size monitor what resolution size is your monitor? for example my regular 19" is 1280x1024 so when I go looking for wallpaper I try to select one that size so it fully fits my screen properly, if you don't get one the proper size you may have to set it to fit the screen by stretching it or bordering it. this is a good site to look for wallpaper where you can select on the left the actual size you need, once you have the picture you want selected and open full size just right click on it and save it to your pc or set it as wallpaper.

It's probable that you're on the right track with the above
suggestions.

Is there NEVER a time with a band on the bottom?
What happens when you push your mouse down there? Can you see
it , does it disappear, still show up or what happens?

It's possible that the aspect ratio, how wide to how tall the
monitor thinks it should show images. This is not a setting
that is in the monitor itself. It's in the software that support
the monitor.

What brand monitor do you have and what's the model number?

I would suggest going to boot up in safe mode and see if the
problem disappears when there's no video driver running the
software for monitor. This happenes when safemode tells the
computer to load, nothing.

By loading nothing the monitor should display things the basic
way 'nature intended'

There are 10's of ways to figure this problem out. PRobably
however only 1 GOOD way to resolve it. BE SURE that you
fully understand all of the choices given to you by well meaning
technicians before committing to how you will solve it.

You do not need to reload anything, to fix it, almost certainly.

Do you have a floppy disk? The 3 1/2" type disk. If not then
a CD might work OK. Do you have any access to memory stick?

I ask because my first thought is to run a simple DOS program
that will let the screen show its native resolutions.
Tere's other ways. I'm trying to avoid going down a path that
introduces confusion.

Thanks for suggestions.I've already tried many things. Resolution settings. Different pictures,etc.These pictures looked fine until problems.
Today i got into NVIDIA control panel,where you can use arrows to change monitor. I can move picture from side to side but the up & down arrows don't work. It addresses my problem,picture seeming to run off the screen.,but can't fix it.
It is an Acer monitor ,3 years old.
Only desktop looks off.Other pages look OK.

Put your screen resolution back to it's native resolution 1400x900

Then go to the link and try a back ground recommend for 1400x900.

1440x900 widescreen wallpapers for 17-inch or 19-inch widescreen LCD Monitors.

have you tried doing a simple system restore to just prior to what ever changed? I would try that

Sorry I was so long getting back here. I wanted to report that a System Restore done the trick. I had no idea a System Restore was so quick & easy.
