desktop picture doesn't fill space

I had some difficulty erasing an advitorial page from my computer. Finally got it gone,now my desktop has a 4 inch band at the bottom. Everything else seems fine.

I have tried other pictures & rebooting. Also tinkered with

display settings. Nothing works.

I have Windows Vista with a 19 inch LCD widescreen monitor.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution to see if that helps? How about the monitor settings is there a setting to stretch the display?

Maybe right click desktop
choose 'Personalize
then 'Desktop Background
then scroll down to 'Wide Screen

and make sure the stretch button is selected;
probably do that with any pic but if the dimensions arent scaled right, it may become distorted.

Bang on, for me at least. The only addendum I would have to make to what I said has to do with keeping the box level over time. It strikes me that if you make it bottomless as I suggested, the soil will tend to sink, and may get under the edges, eventually lifting the box. To avoid that you'd have to anchor the box to the ground. This problem does not arise if you put a bottom (or partial bottom) on it - it will rot eventually, but so will the walls and fence and everything needs to be replaced eventually. I should actually know by now that Frankie is always right, but I'm a slow learner... if you do as she suggested and use a couple of large containers, of course rot would not be an issue. You would still have to compact the soil so they didn't list one way or the other over time (especially if you weed or replant in the ground around them). That can be tricky, so there is also an advantage to following the other part of her suggestion to use trellis structures that are not attached to the planter but rather stuck into it. Perhaps the best option is to take yet another hint from your picture: lay paving slabs into the bed in that area with the soil well-compacted underneath, and put the box on that. Plants can't root into the ground that way though, and will be more dependent on you for water. So if you tend to go away for long trips in the summer, not the best idea. KarinL

That is exactly why I have done nothing yet Amy. I love the Parrish prints and they are smaller in size and I don't want to overpower them. I should have mentioned that was my second choice. Putting the larger daybreak centered over the bed and then splitting the two from my side of the bed on either side. The prints are the old ones from the 20's and the frames and glass are pretty heavy. DH wasn't very happy with that option either. While they didnt have the points of the iron piece, They still could do a number on you if they fell. He suggested a poster. I wasnt thrilled with that either. I found some canvas "prints" but they are about $120 each. For about $80 more I could get more original prints in frames from the 20's (of course if they came up at our local auction house) and I can't see spending that much money on a canvas print. That pillow idea is very pretty. I hadn't thought of curtain like fabric hung either. That might work. I think Fabric barn is having another holiday sale. I do have larger lamps I could use but put the smaller ones here so they didnt block the prints. It's just not working. I have been looking on CL for a king bed frame and no such luck so far. Thanks to all for your suggestions. To clarify a couple of points raised. The wall behind the right third of the range is even and level with everything to the right of the range. I believe it's because it's one piece of sheetrock that comes to the frame behind that part of the range. The left 2/3 of the range is slightly skewed or recessed. Again, I think it's because there's a new piece of sheetrock and slightly recessed framing behind that part of the range and wall (apparently the framing wasn't touched by the new contractors and it was an unevenness that existed with the house). In any case, the range can never be flush because there are 2 "different walls" behind it. I like the thought of covering the gap with SS to make it look like a filler piece that likely won't get noticed and will cover the gap, as well as cost much less. The contractors actually suggested that as well as a possibility. By the way, our contractors did everything except floors and granite. The granite and floor guys were great - they actually noticed other areas of unevenness but because there was no continuous granite, I think the granite guy didn't notice it and simply squared each piece of granite to each respective piece of wall. We've discussed the "should" of the contractor having to cover it. We'll see now if they do what they should because they should have caught this earlier. Depressing, sad, etc... The thing is, the contractors are actually really good, creative, etc. -- they are just CARELESS and HASTY. It's the craftsmanship that seems to be lacking these days. BUT, we're just about done and will post pictures of the final product soon. Thanks again.

Great set of photos, thanks! Makes it far easier if there is a good set of photos to base the discussion on. First thing I would do would be to move the sand cherries into another bed before they get any more settled in. When they grow up they will block the view to the front door. Something with similar deep purple foliage but with less height would be one of the smaller deep purple Weigela. Hopefully someone can weight in with one that they like. If you want something for focus, perhaps a bird bath, piece of artwork, or a fountain would work there. I would probably remove the shrub that is partially in front of the left side of your big window and just leave the ones on the corner. I think it just looks a little awkward with just one side of the window covered. I also might limb up the right side of the tree a bit, just where the branches reach down in front of the house and door. Having good sight lines to your front door makes the house look welcoming. It is a bit difficult to tell, but the white flowered shrub near the end of the drive looks like one of the weedy honeysuckles (Lonicera). I would post both that photo and a closeup of the leaves and flowers on the Name that Plant forum, and if it is, remove it. It will seed all over courtesy of birds eating the berries. I think the rock wall along the drive is really nice looking as is the brick walk (though the walk looks a bit narrow for two to walk abreast.) However, I think that the issue of what's bothering you about the planting is less about specific plants and more about the relationships ( or lack of) between the plants. Right now the bed behind the rock wall along the drive is only really deep enough for one plant, leaving you with pretty much a single file line of plants. I would make the bed 2 or 3 times as deep so that you have room for more than the single row of plants. A deeper bed will make a much more interesting tapestry along the drive. I'd keep most of those plants relatively low, though they can be a bit taller further from the drive. You want to mostly have perennials rather than shrubs right at the top of the wall so that they won't be damaged by snow and snow removal, and also so branches reaching out don't damage cars using the drive. Think about repetition along the driveway bed, either of color or textures or specific plants. Not simple alternating 1 -3 plants, but a more flowing mix. To see some examples of that, get from the library or a book store one or both of Tracy DiSabato- Aust's books, The Well-Designed Mixed Garden: Building Beds and Borders with Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals, and Bulbs or The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques. You will get help on planning to get a nice rhythm going on up the garden along the drive, and can work on interesting foliage along with flowers to create a long season of interest. You may find inspiration from Fine Gardening magazine's website as well. Here's an example of designing a long border like yours "A Strategy for a Long Border" and another one showing some great examples of repetition as you look down the borders in this set of photos (use the arrows to see additional photos.)

it is always best to try to use a wallpaper pic that is sized for your size monitor what resolution size is your monitor? for example my regular 19" is 1280x1024 so when I go looking for wallpaper I try to select one that size so it fully fits my screen properly, if you don't get one the proper size you may have to set it to fit the screen by stretching it or bordering it. this is a good site to look for wallpaper where you can select on the left the actual size you need, once you have the picture you want selected and open full size just right click on it and save it to your pc or set it as wallpaper.

It's probable that you're on the right track with the above
suggestions.

Is there NEVER a time with a band on the bottom?
What happens when you push your mouse down there? Can you see
it , does it disappear, still show up or what happens?

It's possible that the aspect ratio, how wide to how tall the
monitor thinks it should show images. This is not a setting
that is in the monitor itself. It's in the software that support
the monitor.

What brand monitor do you have and what's the model number?

I would suggest going to boot up in safe mode and see if the
problem disappears when there's no video driver running the
software for monitor. This happenes when safemode tells the
computer to load, nothing.

By loading nothing the monitor should display things the basic
way 'nature intended'

There are 10's of ways to figure this problem out. PRobably
however only 1 GOOD way to resolve it. BE SURE that you
fully understand all of the choices given to you by well meaning
technicians before committing to how you will solve it.

You do not need to reload anything, to fix it, almost certainly.

Do you have a floppy disk? The 3 1/2" type disk. If not then
a CD might work OK. Do you have any access to memory stick?

I ask because my first thought is to run a simple DOS program
that will let the screen show its native resolutions.
Tere's other ways. I'm trying to avoid going down a path that
introduces confusion.

Thanks for suggestions.I've already tried many things. Resolution settings. Different pictures,etc.These pictures looked fine until problems.
Today i got into NVIDIA control panel,where you can use arrows to change monitor. I can move picture from side to side but the up & down arrows don't work. It addresses my problem,picture seeming to run off the screen.,but can't fix it.
It is an Acer monitor ,3 years old.
Only desktop looks off.Other pages look OK.

Put your screen resolution back to it's native resolution 1400x900

Then go to the link and try a back ground recommend for 1400x900.

1440x900 widescreen wallpapers for 17-inch or 19-inch widescreen LCD Monitors.

have you tried doing a simple system restore to just prior to what ever changed? I would try that

Sorry I was so long getting back here. I wanted to report that a System Restore done the trick. I had no idea a System Restore was so quick & easy.
