The best paper and plastic?

After browsing a few of the posts, this is going to sound totally tacky, but we'll be using paper plates and plastic utensils this year for Thanksgiving.

Does anyone have any recomendations on specific brands that are better than others? My shopping choices are Walmart, Target, HEB(grocery), and there's a small party store in town, but I'm not opposed to driving into the city if I need to.

We're hosting the party, and last year there were 20+ guests, and we expect a similar crowd this year. Last year, I used a mix of newer white china and vintage pieces, and vintage silverplate flatware. It was really, really pretty, but it ALL had to be hand washed. Add to that using all vintage linens (which had to be washed and pressed, then spot treated and washed and pressed again,) and I just can't do that again.

I'll still be using the linen tablecloths, but I think what will work best for us is to use disposables for the rest. I'm slowly building a collection of mismatched white dinner plates that can go in the dishwasher, but won't have quite enough for this year's party.

Hobby Lobby has some nice paper products & quite a selection for Tksgvg...or if you have a Factory Card & Outlet store in your location...they always have tons of paper products.

I don't mind paper products but hate plastic silverware...how 'bout using your real flatware...would be easier to wash for 20 flatware settings than washing & ironing linens! LOL! Ahhh, it doesn't matter...it's the cooking & being together that is the fun part! Enjoy your big group! We have 15 & do it all buffet style. (but I get help with dishes afterwards!) LOL! Jeanne S.

For the last 4 years I have had anywhere from 20-30+ for Thanksgiving dinner and have used the good chinette plates but used my own flatware. Dinner is buffet style. We bring in additional tables and we finally broke down and bought a dozen folding chairs. Dinner is very informal and if weather is nice enough a lot of the kids eat outdoors.

I agree with Jeanne - if you can use your own silverware - much nicer than plastic. THe main thing is not to stress and to just enjoy family .....

There is a fast growing industry in collecting and composting organic waste, especially food scrap. So bagged compost is not just going to be manure anymore, it's yard trimmings, tree limbs and food scrap. Some contamination is inevitable. Lots of the food scrap haulers use compostable can liners, but not all, so you may find bits of plastic now and then. Plastic itself is merely a nuisance in the garden, not a toxic problem. If you're concerned about what else goes in, keep bugging the producer and ask them what their inputs are.

brown paper bags are composed of post consumer content. not sure of the percentage. also, a brown paper bag will decompose in a few years making something better. cant say that about plastic bags. as far as recycling plastic, yes theyre recycling plastic. however alot of places its difficult to find someone to recycle plastic bags. here in virginia i have to go to a business that takes plastic bags(target is the only one i can think of now). the city wont recycle them. the city wont recycle anything that isnt a plastic bottle. they recently starting allowing the caps. some places are years behind the curve. i had to throw a patio chair in the trash even after arguing with the waste management folks that HDPE is HDPE regardless of what shape it comes in... silly. and i just realized this thread is a year old. sorry

How to remove paper/plastic flowers?

Oh how do I hate hate those fugly flowers. I find it kind of funny especially when the cactus is blooming in store at the same time it has those ugly straw flowers. Cactus have IMHO the most beautiful flowers and then they glue those clown flowers on. What I do is vey carefully try to pick off the glue with tweezers as much as I can. Then sometimes i will have to cut a few spines, but I have yet to rip any spines or flesh using this method. Goodluck:)

Is it better to store seeds in plastic bags or paper envelopes?

That would depend upon the storage environment, the type of seed, and how long you intend to store the seed. My 2 c's (well, maybe 3) ;-) Paper envelopes are good for short-term storage, and are actually the best means if the dryness of the seed is questionable. Not good if the storage environment has periods of high humidity. Paper envelopes are easy to label & many use them, but they are best enclosed in an air-proof jar, with a little desiccant. Left out in the open, seed life in paper envelopes is dependent upon the ambient environment, and can be unpredictable. If you choose to use them, store them in a location where the temperature tends to be cool & stable throughout the year, and humidity is low. Zippered storage bags are good for short to medium term storage. I store most of my seeds in them, and provided that the seed was healthy & properly dried to begin with, many seeds (such as beans, squash, cukes, and tomatoes) have at least fair germination for up to 10 years. Not all zippered plastic bags are equal. Most snack, sandwich, and storage bags allow too much air penetration, and are inferior for anything other than short-term seed storage. Freezer bags are made of thicker material, and have better zipper seals. I've used both Zip lock & Hefty, and consider both adequate for storing small seed quantities. However, I had several seal failures storing beans in Zip lock bags (dumping the whole bag unexpectedly), and the Hefty freezer bags have stronger seals, so that is all I use now. The small zippered craft bags are good for mailing seed to others (and I recommend them for that purpose to protect seeds from the elements), but if used for seed storage, I would recommend placing them in a jar, and treating them the same as paper envelopes. Plastic bags trap sunlight, so they should NEVER be placed in direct sun. Direct exposure for even a short period of time can quickly kill or injure any enclosed seeds. If planting during warm humid weather, I recommend keeping the bulk of the seed in a controlled environment. Transfer the seed to be planted into a different container (such as those paper envelopes) and quickly reseal the bag. It is helpful to roll up the bags & squeeze out as much air as possible before closing, and to pack the bags in such a way that they are unable to re-inflate. I can't over emphasize the need for the seed to be properly dried before storage in any air-tight container. If the seed has too much moisture, it will deteriorate very quickly.

I know a LOT of families who use nothing but paper plates, tin foil pans, etc. so everything can be dumped in the trash after dinner.

It's because they have a lot of people over and they can have more fun visiting instead of cleaning the kitchen.

Last year I bought some TG paper plates online, but only because I didn't want to drive to the City to get some.

I think it will be fun for you and everyone there!

Greetings...if HEB is a shopping place for you, you must be in Texas!!! I'm so glad to have an accomplice!!
We have between 35 and 45 folks at Thanksgiving. I use real tablecloths, real silverware (bundled into the oversized paper napkins and tied with a raffia bow...you can just pick up the packet of napkin fork and knife at the end of the buffet line)
To answer your real question :^)... I buy the hard plastic plates and cups (solid gold color) from "Wally's" Card and Party Factory and I buy the oversized napkins from Hobby Lobby. I also buy smaller paper plates and the little cocktail sized napkins...all to match the oversized napkins... for the dessert table. I put plastic forks in a big glass cylinder on the dessert table as well.

Jaybird, I think we actually have a Wally's here in town. Yes, I'm in Texas.

Anyway, it's a moot point, now. DH doesn't want paper and plastic...I bought a load of white china plates on ebay, and picked up 3 more at the thrift today. I'm going to round out our regular stainless with some plain pieces from Target.

I will be using the paper napkins, though. And the small paper plates and plastic forks for dessert. Whew!!
