Router,Modem Restart

I forgot the order of restart when I shut them both off due to Internet proplems.

Modem, router, computer(s). Allow the first to come up fully before moving on to the next.

I typically shut down my computer completely. Then I shut off the router for about 15 seconds. Then I turn the router back on and let it fully reboot (quit blinking). Last, I turn the computer on and see if it can talk with the rebooted router.

I've also shut down my router and left it off; restarted my computer; and then powered the router back up once the computer is fully booted.

Having said all that, whenever I have a problem, 98% of the time it's the router, and I often just leave the computer on, pull the power on the router for 15 seconds, and then plug it back in. This generally restores my Internet connection. If that doesn't work, I'll do one of the approaches that involve rebooting the computer.

do you happen to still have the paper work that came with it like the directions and the instructions manual that will have all your default info in it and how to reset it. If not look on the bottom for the model and google that you should be able to go to the manufacturer site and find the manuals. Did you set up your router originally with it connected to a desktop computer, in other words which pc did you install the software on? The router is setup on the family PC not my Laptop. Unplugging the router (and modem if one) itself from power and powering down all the computers, then power up the modem if you have cable first then after a while power up the router and once it is fully up then power up the various computers, often makes a big difference. I think we have a modem and a router for Xbox and laptops. are you just using the Vista built in firewall? Yes.I'm using the windows firewall. what are you using is it cable or dsl or what for internet? My son says it's cable/DSL internet. have you done all your windows updates? Yes.Except for three optional ones. I'm confused about resetting the router. That would be on the main computer. Will this help my laptop internet connection?

I would try a full power down of everything and re start in order. turn off everything including pc, laptops, router, modem, printer everything that is in the loop and draws power. Leave it turned off for at least 5 mins. then power up in this sequence, modem first let it get all green lights up, next the router let it get green lights up, next your main pc if there is one connected directly to the router, next other computers and other devices. See if that makes any difference, many times a full shut down and restart in sequence will help.

Great news! so simple when you know what to look for. I have posted the instructions in case another user has a similar issue. Windows 7 and Vista From the Start menu, select Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.Double-click Network and Sharing Center. From the list of tasks on the left, click Change adapter settings (in Windows 7), or Manage network connections (in Vista). For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties. For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties. From the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK. I had a horrible day with my computer as well!! I checked my emails and saw that all of them were dated 2010. All the 2011 emails were gone...I checked the "deleted" folder and nothing there either. I looked in the other folders..nothing. I checked C drive, program files, Outlook..nothing. After a couple of hours of this, I called my server tech. He said he'd check my account and see if they were still on the server...NO. He said I (or someone else) had to have deleted the emails, therefore putting them into the deleted folder. Then deleted them from the deleted folder, thus deleting them from the server..permanently. I absolutely did not do that!! DH said, "Well, maybe you did it and forgot." I can't even tell you my reply. :( I do delete the unnecessary emails as I read them. I flag the ones I need to save. I publish a monthly newsletter for our little city and have people who write some of the columns for me via emails. I try very hard to get the paper out by the end of the month with the details of activities for the following month. So as I was preparing to start the paper for January, my writers had emailed their articles. See? Now I'm rambling, of course. The episode ended about 4 p.m. with 2 Excedrins, coffee and a nap. Pulled the cover over my head and decided I'd surface next year. But, oh no, someone mentioned that Christmas had not come yet. Deep breath...I am now wrapping zillions of gifts, preparing bedrooms for DD and grands who will come home with us after Christmas & making cookies. Yep, all at one time. No stress...

So you dont turn off the modem?

I made an assumption about your setup which may be wrong. I have only one device connected between the wall and my computer, which is both a modem and a wireless router combined, so I have just one thing to turn off besides the computer. When you headed your post with the phrase "Router, modem" I thought you were talking about one piece of equipment. If what you are talking about is a modem connected to the wall, which runs to a router, which connects to your computer (wired or wirelessly), then just follow the order mike kaiser gave you. Shut them all down, then start the modem, then the router, then the computer. With some systems, the order may not make any difference, and you can't hurt anything regardless of the order, but Mike's advice is the most logical approach: turn on the first thing in the chain that gets the signal, then the second, then the third (the computer).

I read the thread title as a list; i.e., red, blue, green.

In any case the order would be either

1. Cable or DSL Modem
2. Router
3. Computer(s) and other Internet enabled device

OR

1. Cable or DSL Modem/Router (sometimes called a "gateway")
2. Computer(s) and other Internet enabled device

Cable company (mine is Comcast) suggests disconnecting the modem for 10-20 seconds as the solve-all to cable connect problems. That works sometimes but the usual reason for the problem is the cable company's server or some other comparable reason. And the company is the last to know of a problem in a neighborhood.
Does anyone know the reason why the modem doesn't do its job at times?

DSL server is BELL SYMPATICO (Canada).They never admit the proplem is at their end.They always say it is a proplem with your settings,or your router.Never their supplied modem.Then you say to them that you'r going to the other guys,Bingo,everything works again.TILL THE NEXT TIME.
