Router,Modem Restart

I forgot the order of restart when I shut them both off due to Internet proplems.

Modem, router, computer(s). Allow the first to come up fully before moving on to the next.

I typically shut down my computer completely. Then I shut off the router for about 15 seconds. Then I turn the router back on and let it fully reboot (quit blinking). Last, I turn the computer on and see if it can talk with the rebooted router.

I've also shut down my router and left it off; restarted my computer; and then powered the router back up once the computer is fully booted.

Having said all that, whenever I have a problem, 98% of the time it's the router, and I often just leave the computer on, pull the power on the router for 15 seconds, and then plug it back in. This generally restores my Internet connection. If that doesn't work, I'll do one of the approaches that involve rebooting the computer.

first thing to try is a full power down to reset everything, turn power off to the pc, router, modem everything. let it sit for about 5 mins, then power up in this sequence, the modem first and let it get fully lit up, then the router let it fully light, then the main pc once it is fully up you can then power up any other computers. Quite often doing a power down then a full power up of the full system will fix those kinds of problems, the modems do need to be powered off like that on occasion. let us know if that helped at all. If it does not help try a speed test to see if you can get any indication of what is happening to your DSl. Speedtest.net speed-test page do you have a firewall on it? what security programs do you run and is the pc fully updated?

First I have to confess that I have not gotten to backing up the hard drive - or working on the start up programs. Other computer issues in the family took priority - and then we had non-technological family difficulties. So my focus has been elsewhere. The internet connection still sometimes drops. Less often but it happens. I can just buy a wireless dongle. The laptop had been running cooler after getting all the bogus programs off. But lately it's sluggish again and running hot. The hard drive is making a bad noise. Not sure how to describe it but kind of like a car struggling to turn over. It does it just occasionally - some times if it's just trying to perform some action - and just now when I started the laptop. (It has not made the sound since it started up). Since hard drives are mechanical, does this sound like the hard drive might be failing? if it's hardware failure, is there any point in running chkdsk? or any other test? If the hard drive is failing, could that be causing it to run hot and slow at times? seems logical to me but I have no idea. I could inexpensively replace the hard drive. And get a wireless dongle. I imagine all that could be done for under $100 and just a small amount of time. The other troubleshooting I did was partly to learn. Here's what I like about the computer and why I may want to save/keep it: great size - 13", light - but has a great, great keyboard for such a small laptop. like the trackball and no touchpad. includes a free upgrade to Vista (so it could be used after XP is not supported) What I don't like: ongoing wireless adapter problems, sometimes running hot, possible failing hard drive, no web cam. Not sure if I'll put it to sleep soon - or try to resuscitate it. If I decide to let it die a peaceful death, there's no need to back up the HD. If I decide to replace the hard drive (if it needs it) or keep it if the HD's fine, I will back it up and make that a priority. And of course, now that I'm writing this post, it's behaving absolutely fine. Quick, cool, no noise. Thanks. Lynn.

I would try a full power down of everything and re start in order. turn off everything including pc, laptops, router, modem, printer everything that is in the loop and draws power. Leave it turned off for at least 5 mins. then power up in this sequence, modem first let it get all green lights up, next the router let it get green lights up, next your main pc if there is one connected directly to the router, next other computers and other devices. See if that makes any difference, many times a full shut down and restart in sequence will help.

It does appear to be connection related, the next steps would be to un - plug router and modem for a min or so then replug them in. Next This is just a small program runs right from desktop, no need to install anything, simple..... Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files. Download TFC by OldTimer click Here to your desktop. Click the Save file tab, save it to the desktop. Then double click it to run it. Double-clickTFC.exe to run it. Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin * Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process. * Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. * Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished. Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning. So you dont turn off the modem?

I made an assumption about your setup which may be wrong. I have only one device connected between the wall and my computer, which is both a modem and a wireless router combined, so I have just one thing to turn off besides the computer. When you headed your post with the phrase "Router, modem" I thought you were talking about one piece of equipment. If what you are talking about is a modem connected to the wall, which runs to a router, which connects to your computer (wired or wirelessly), then just follow the order mike kaiser gave you. Shut them all down, then start the modem, then the router, then the computer. With some systems, the order may not make any difference, and you can't hurt anything regardless of the order, but Mike's advice is the most logical approach: turn on the first thing in the chain that gets the signal, then the second, then the third (the computer).

I read the thread title as a list; i.e., red, blue, green.

In any case the order would be either

1. Cable or DSL Modem
2. Router
3. Computer(s) and other Internet enabled device

OR

1. Cable or DSL Modem/Router (sometimes called a "gateway")
2. Computer(s) and other Internet enabled device

Cable company (mine is Comcast) suggests disconnecting the modem for 10-20 seconds as the solve-all to cable connect problems. That works sometimes but the usual reason for the problem is the cable company's server or some other comparable reason. And the company is the last to know of a problem in a neighborhood.
Does anyone know the reason why the modem doesn't do its job at times?

DSL server is BELL SYMPATICO (Canada).They never admit the proplem is at their end.They always say it is a proplem with your settings,or your router.Never their supplied modem.Then you say to them that you'r going to the other guys,Bingo,everything works again.TILL THE NEXT TIME.
