What a day I had yesterday.....Whew!!! I am glad its over

Yesterday I laid down to take a nap and when I awakened Jan said she had gone on the computer to check her email and suddeenly a pop-up appeared saying there was a virus threat..She unknowingly clicked on the pop-up for details and Kabooom, the deed was done, the screen locked up and another pop-up appeared saying we could download a virus blocker for a mere $78.

I exited out of the internet but the warning was still there and nothing else would open.

I tried to run my virus scan but it would not run,,,msg said it had a corrupted file....

Tried to got to system tools and use a restore point, but again with the corrupted file stuff, but the pop-up reappeared saying we could download the virus remover for $78.

Did a restart in "Safe mode" and still got nothing but the ad for the virus scan for $78.

I called tech support and they tried for an hour, but no help. They said all I could do was reboot the entire system, which means you loose everything on the hard drive. Fortunately I had everything backed up on an external hard drive that was not connected, so it was still clean.

On this machine the reboot program is hard burned on the drive so I turned the machine off, then restarted with F-12 to start the reboot, and guess what I got? That damn add, and the whole system locked until you subscribe for the download.

The I got an idea, When this machine was new I had opted to make a set of startup discs so I pulled them out, loaded the first disc and hit restart. This time it came up allowing me to do the complete system re-boot. Well, I am sure you all know how that goes..about 3 hours sitting her playing with that mess, and you end up back at day one, as if it is a new computer, now you have to reload your custom software and do all that day one setup nonesense.

It was finally about 1:45AM when I got down to setting up the internet connection and downloading a couple programs that I use a lot, Photoscape for one...

I hit the icon for the internet and got a blank screen telling me it could not locate the homepage....What the he*****

I tried again, with the same results..so I then set out to double check all cables to the router and modem, reset both the router & modem and tried again...again nothing....

The screen had a tab for a net connection diagnostic so I ran that....8 minutes later it said my router & modem were fine, but there was no signal from my ISP.....

About that time Jan got up to go to the bathroom so she kindly made me a cup of coffee and brought it in sort of appologetically and was telling me she was sorry she messed up the computer....

I politely told her that I was very angry, but not in the least at her, she had not done anything except to open an email, in which some A@@ hole had attached that mess.

I then called the ISP provider and discussed the problem of no signal with them and they told me that the same pop-up BS had hit the server and the entire system was temporarily off line but they had their techs on it.

Well, I had gone as far as I could with the computer so I took my coffee and went out in the kitchen where I thought I would sit and mentally cool off a while before going back to bed. So I turned the tv on and sat there sipping my coffee and all of the sudden the tv went blank, just a blue screen and a lot of static...what the he(( now?

I went to be and slept from 4AM till 8am when I was awakened by voices coming from the TV in the bedroom..OKAY!!! The system is up..so I got out of bed and came and checked the computer, sure enough, the internet was up again, so I clicked on the GW to have a few light moments while I drank a coffee, then I was gonna get busy with the computer business..or so I thought,,,2 minutes later it all went down again, no signal from the ISP.

They finally got it all working again about 10am .. so how was your day??????

So far, not so bad. On the downhill side of a bad case of strep throat. Still sore, but temp down into the 90s. Catching up on work and getting some strength back. Positive side of it? Lost nearly 15 pounds so I should be able to hit a donut hut as soon as I'm able to swallow.

Hope you got your backups restored and everything back to near pre-event status.

The only flowers blooming here are the ever-durable snapdragons. No one told them they were expected to fade away during our summers, so they have bloomed non-stop since early spring. Neighbor has pansies, finally perking up. Ice. Ice on sidewalks. Slipping across roads. Dripping from the roof. Encasing trees from branch to twig. I know it's coming, but I never quite believe it until I see the world glazed. One of the biggest joys of retirement: never, ever again having to scrape all the car windows, slip down slickety walks, or refrain from swearing at the newest Northerner driver who is discovering that our local "snow" is most often either hiding under or over ice - most of those good folks making the discovery as they slide into a ditch or a nearby car. Here's to ice outside, and here's to a cup of hot chocolate inside.

We had a hot dry summer but making up for it, we have been having a beautiful fall that started earlier than some years with very little freezing. We have had only two nights drop a bit below freezing. I'm not surprised at how well things are doing. My entire yard has been a mass of color and still is. People who don't live here would think going by some of the things said that Oklahoma is an unending natural disaster area. Its not. We have predominantly more nice days than bad days each year and we nearly always have a great fall. Seems like the bad days get all the attention lately. I love this time of year. The trees are gorgeous here in the city and the weather has been stupendous. Most plants have snapped back nicely except some that prefer cooler climates that couldn't take the hot summer. You couldn't ask for a nicer place to garden than in Oklahoma in the fall and we have had many good summers, not every single year, but more good ones than bad in my memory. We are used to comparatively mild winters and at worst, have a couple bad spells or the temperature drops down in the single digits or less a few days. I can think of a lot of places much worse than Oklahoma to live in winter. I once lived in North Carolina and I really missed the Oklahoma wind the whole time I lived there. The wind never blew there. I prefer the Great Plains and I think the good outweighs the bad.

As I lay here in bed reading this, I have a large pad on 2 sheets of paper towels folded long ways two line that pad, 2 depends pull-ups on, a disposable Chuck, a fabric Chuck and a towel underneath all of that. I along with many other women that I've read about on this thread have suffered these 'monster' periods for a very long time, well actually to the tune of 25 years. I have left my stamp (flooding Period gushing pools) at work at home, at the child Gymboree class, on Greyhound buses, on every form of Transport known to man. I have always had to have the heaviest flow pack of pads I can find along with Depends pull ups and tampons and black pants at several strategic locations during my day. One kit in my car, one at my job and always in the house. I could identify with the frustration and I was happy that some people mentioned the mental anguish and the feelings of being just out of it. Feeling isolated and unsociable. Over the last 25 years I have adapted to living with the memory loss, fog and just kind of drifted through my day on auto during these episodes. I was not financially position to be able to stay home during the illness, and on one occasion I remember coming up off the subway train and bent over on the street screaming in pain. But this was New York so everyone passed by and ignored me, indifferent to what they were seeing. At that time a taxi driver saw me and had pity on me. He insisted that he take me home. but I was adamant because I didn't want to lose my job; so I told him to take me to work. By the time I got to work they had to call an ambulance and rush me to the hospital. I was dehydrated and anemic due to the blood loss. it was the first of many occasions like that, and I would frequent the ER bleeding heavily and dizzy over the following years. 10 years ago I had three fibroids removed of which one was the size of a grapefruit. The monster periods lightened up for maybe a year or two but then it came right back with a vengeance and was like Clockwork every 3 weeks as per usual. Heavy and uncontrollable with massive clotting. I was too afraid to have the hysterectomy because of people's horror stories including my own mothers; and the fact that it apparently brings on menopause, along with all the syndromes almost immediately. My little sister had gone through menopause at age 43, so I figured I'd wait it out thinking I can't be that far behind. I am 51 years old, and to my absolute Delight had not experienced a period in the last 7 months; so I thought I was done with it all , thinking that it was all behind me, that the nightmare was over, and got rid of all my stationed 'kits.' Yes it meant I had terrible hot flashes, but those paled when measured up against those monster periods... Which brings me right back to today laying here reading all your heart wrenching stories. At this point I don't know what to do and I really don't want a hysterectomy after suffering so much with the fibroid removal. moreover I don't have the luxury or option of taking time off of work. I guess I will make the appointment with the gynecologist and see what options are out there two decades on. I'm hoping for a miracle. Again I want to thank all you ladies for being so candid and sharing your stories. It has been really helpful to me and, I'm sure, to many other women going through this nightmare. I wish you all success with your various treatment options. I will definitely come back and update you on what treatment the gynecologist recommend.

Bob ate his dinner and all of it, which is unusual.. it is so difficult to keep his weight up, but they say the emphysema is eating up most of his energy and as long as his blood sugar and cholesterol, etc.. levels are good.. just to let him eat whatever it is he wants. Tonight, he asked for some brownies.. so I whipped up a pan of them.. he at a third of the pan.. lol... but then said he felt sort of sick.. (jeez I wonder why ) But after about an hour and a nice cup of coffee, he said he felt better... I have to be very careful about scatter rugs now, and have taken them all up. It is too easy for him to mis step and take a tumble.. and I am getting a fellow to install a good sturdy banister on the stairs going down to his man cave.. He doesn't want any, but I think he should have something for balance.. He is feeling pretty good, but he is more childlike than ever before.. but still is loving ..... he does have a temper, but it is just frustration that his body parts just don't function like they did 10 years ago.. We had a nice talk tonight over supper.... and he asked if I had considered his going to a nursing home... I assured him that a NH would only be a very very very last resort, and I would look for other alternatives first... and that I would always be here for him as long as the Lord will grant us that blessing. He seemed to be satisfied with my answer... and I meant every word... We will see the doctor tomorrow morning at 8:30, so maybe we will find some answers there, but I seriously doubt he will be able to offer any more than what we already have... The doctor is an Ultra Christian (Pentacostal)and believes in the power of prayer... and also understands how to deal with the spiritual side of doctoring too....so we are very fortunate to have him... Please keep Bob in your prayers as we begin another day... Please pray that I am able to remain focused on the cross and not of the world and what it has to offer. I'm on a high, working through the night on a project and for the first time in many years have not been sick at Chirstmas or in and out of a hospital. More than that am not a burden to anybody at this time of year.

I was with you through your whole story although yours was a double dose of problems I have had and fear every day. You never know when the "big one" will strike and the following reprocussion. It is a blessing to know how to proceed following a virus attack. You kept at it, as you had to and it could have gone any which way but you won.
It's a Christmas miracle!!

Well, I am glad you are back. I hoped all the working hours that I would not be one of the people sent home early. As is, I don't have many hours anyway. Every time it's slow in the store, people get sent home early....

I know how frustrating that is, and I agree that there is a special place in he)) for those who create viruses.

There is a valuable lesson in your story: "When this machine was new I had opted to make a set of startup discs..." I always make the startup discs. If you don't, and you need them, not only do you have to pay for the discs, but you also have to wait several days to receive them in the mail. That translates to down-time on the computer.

Glad you are back up and running, but I know it's a pain to have to re-load everything to get things the way you want them. Merry Christmas!

That happened to me last year. It's a particularly nasty marketing ploy to get people to buy their product. I'm surprised they're still in business.

Fortunately, I have two computers. So while one was incapacitated I went on the other one and Googled the problem. Sure enough, it had happened to lots of people, and more than one site described the relatively easy fix. Otherwise, I would probably have had a day like yours.

Yes sometimes reformatting back to LIKE NEW is the only solution for those viruses! You'd be surprised how many people actually fall fo that virus and give their credit card info to them only to have to close their credit card account because it is a scam to steal your credit card info! GAH people are so gullible sometimes! My husband is a computer repair man, so we see it all!

So always be sure and burn those recovery disks when you get a new computer because sometimes it the only way to fix it once it gets infested with viruses! And always keep your important files on a back up disk because sometimes even the pros can't get them off or they will charge an arm and leg to do it!

Once you've had a virus you should change your password on your server account and on your email account, especially the email.

I had a horrible day with my computer as well!! I checked my emails and saw that all of them were dated 2010.
All the 2011 emails were gone...I checked the "deleted" folder and nothing there either. I looked in the other folders..nothing. I checked C drive, program files, Outlook..nothing. After a couple of hours of this, I called my server tech. He said he'd check my account and see if they were still on the server...NO. He said I (or someone else) had to have deleted the emails, therefore putting them into the deleted folder. Then deleted them from the deleted folder, thus deleting them from the server..permanently.

I absolutely did not do that!! DH said, "Well, maybe you did it and forgot." I can't even tell you my reply. :(

I do delete the unnecessary emails as I read them. I flag the ones I need to save. I publish a monthly newsletter for our little city and have people who write some of the columns for me via emails. I try very hard to get the paper out by the end of the month with the details of activities for the following month. So as I was preparing to start the paper for January, my writers had emailed their articles. See? Now I'm rambling, of course.

The episode ended about 4 p.m. with 2 Excedrins, coffee and a nap. Pulled the cover over my head and decided I'd surface next year.

But, oh no, someone mentioned that Christmas had not come yet. Deep breath...I am now wrapping zillions of gifts, preparing bedrooms for DD and grands who will come home with us after Christmas & making cookies. Yep, all at one time. No stress...

I had the same problem last week. Microsoft security essentials is my virus protector (free), so they had to be called and they took over the computer and back dated it a few days and it seems ok now. I just hate when that stuff happens. I am so dumb when it comes to these things.

Many of you have a library nearby.

Most libraries have computers.

That they'll let you use (if you smile nicely).

It's happened to me. I look in my Windows XP book and do a system restart back to a prior day. I usually pick a date about a week back. We once had a virus so bad (DH got a phony email from "Mmicrosoft", followed and clicked as directed, got all jammed up). We had to have a local guy computer geek come in and it cost us $120 if I remember right.

What a day I had yesterday.....Whew!!! I am glad its over
