Can you match white oak s floors with red oak floors?
Comments (6)Same here. I extended my carpeted area to hardwood flooring. My contractor put new red oak in place of white oak and the stain stick out like a soar thumb. I don't know what to do. We haven't poly'ed yet. Any suggestions please?...See MoreWhite oak flooring...stain or clear coat? Products recommended?
Comments (4)White Oak, if going with a natural water based finish, will require a sealant. The sealant prevents tannin pull (yellows and some light greens moving to the surface of the wood). So long as the sealant is used, a clear coat will look the same as what your wood looks like if you wet it with water. You can choose the level of gloss. I'm fond of Satin, but people who like more shine will work well with the semi-gloss. I'm a fan of Loba 2K Supra AT. It is IMPRESSIVE. It's toughness when working with a 3 coat system is one of the best finishes you can achieve from a site finished hardwood. Bona Traffic HD is another tough finish. Again, when used with 3 coats it is potentially the toughest finish on the market. Both of these are into the $180+ per gallon but WELL worth the cost. Both companies offer their own stains. A WELL compensated flooring professional will be able to offer stain patches for you to view on your own floors. They will also apply a single coat of your finish over the colour patches. It is the only true way to view a stain....See MoreSeeking Advice on Installing New Oak Floors on top of Old Oak Floors
Comments (2)The cheap way: Remove carpet, add a decorative TRIM at the doorways (where the two woods meet) and lay the new wood PERPENDICULAR to the hardwood in the rest of the home. Sand and refinish all. The most APPROPRIATE way (to lay the new wood parallel to existing): Remove old wood floor, lay new plywood subfloor and lay new wood flooring parallel (in the same direction) as the existing hardwood. Sand and refinish all. You will need to choose between FINANCIAL vs. Aesthetic concerns. I'm someone who appreciates the TECHNICAL side of the building industry (aka. Best Practices) who is also a cheap/lazy person who pays attention to finances MUCH more than I pay attention to aesthetics. I choose the 'decorative trim' with the new wood running perpendicular to the existing wood. It is inside the budget AND it gets you the 'right' type of install (which you have already been told is best) AND it gets a solid hardwood throughout the house. Done. Done. And done. There is ONE option that NO ONE has discussed with you: Remove ALL flooring surfaces and install ONE wood floor. Sand and refinish....See MoreRift sawn white oak cabinets pulling orange after clear coat
Comments (35)I think it looks awesome! It might not be exactly what you thought, but I think it may be a happy mistake. I gives a little contrast to the floor and a nice back drop for the island. I do agree with Anna - change that trim around the base of the island. That light color will look a mess in a very short time. Assuming you are trying to cover a gap, see if you can get a scribe molding or shoe molding. This looks like a quarter round. . Enjoy!...See MoreUser
