Get some antispyware programs and use them. I suggest three free ones. Spybot Search&Destroy, Adaware and Spyware Blaster. They will rid your computer of doubleclick and a lot of other garbage. You can find any of these by doing a search.

By the way, I would also suggest that you visit the Microsoft download site and download and install Windows Defender. This is an excellent anti-spyware program from MS that is free.

Actually, I wondered if perhaps the problem was spyware, and I had Ad-Aware and Spybot. Neither had been updated in a few months, so I first updated the Ad-Aware. Once updated, I ran a "Full Scan" and the things found were 2 tracking cookies and a number of MRUs (which, according to Ad-Aware, aren't too serious). I quarantined all of them, but the problem trying to access Google persisted.

When I tried to download updates to Spybot, each of the updates showed a red circle with a slash through it, and the message "!!!bad checksum!" next to each one, so I don't think that the update was successful.

I'll try downloading the Spyware Blaster and the Windows Defender, and will let you know the results....thanks again!

I finally successfully ran scan using Spybot. It turned up a problem with something called "TagASaurus" involving a tracking cookie.

I used Spybot to fix it, and now, at last, I actually reach Google's site!

I have just downloaded SpywareBlaster. Looks like it will help protect me from this sort of thing in the future.

Might flush windows dns cache incase its somehow gotten corrupt.
open a CMD window from the Run line off the start button menu, then type in;
ipconfig /flushdns

Then if still happens, you might want to use windows search feature, put a check mark in the box for advanced.
Search for the hosts file with no extension;
HOSTS
standard path is C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

right click and open with or send_to notepad. Its a special text file. Do not open it with anything other than notepad because when you save changes wordpad and some other text views add funny carriage returns and formatting which will screw things up.

When you type in www.google.com in your browser, that needs to be converted to an ip number and windows will look in the HOSTS file first...then it looks in recent dns cache' which you just cleared,,, before actually asking your isp for googles street address.

Anyhow,, in the HOSTS some less than honest exploits will redirect your google search to them from there,,,, so see if it has google listed in HOSTS with an ip number, if so just disable that line by adding a pound sign plus one blank space in front of it like this...
