White trim faux pas?
Comments (2)Yes, a slightly lower gloss can be better in average sized rooms. And of course there are seventy-leven zillion shades of white...the trick is to find one that works with all your wall colors...and, yes, all your trim should match. The exception is if you want to paint the trim in a room to match the walls. This can work with a rich dark color, like a deep blue or a rich clay in a den or library or powder room, to minimize the distraction of a lot of trim. But I think that works best in a room that is off to itself, rather than one that is visible from several other rooms that do have white or cream trim. And it's not to everyone's taste....See MoreDesign Faux Pas at entry? Need input and critique!!
Comments (17)Chisue, The walkway width is 3.5ft, we considered making it 5ft wide but now we are thinking that 3.5ft will do. Stairs are also 3.5ft wide. Ours is a ~2200 sqft house, 2 stories, with first level footprint of ~1150 sqft, and I think at this proportion we do not need 5ft width (any thoughts?). JDS, Currently my idea is to have a bench or floating shelf like in the image I am attaching here. If not then we will keep a small stool there. The closet will hide the shelves for shoes....See MoreFamily photos in dining room: a designer’s faux pas or is it ok?
Comments (47)I love family photos. However, (and this is just me) I get a creepy feeling when they are put in such a prominent spot that for a lot of the time I am in a room, the whole family is staring at me! My beloved SO has LARGE family photos of his whole family on a shelving unit right across from our bed in the bedroom, and it is a small room so the edge of the bed is relatively close to the shelving unit. His whole clan is always staring at me, when I go to bed at night, when I'm changing into my jammies or getting dressed in the morning, and when I wake up. I wouldn't want my clan up there, that's for sure, but different strokes for different folks. He likes seeing them all the time and I am just splitting hairs with that creepy feeling. Better than in the bathroom I guess! My dad has a small photo of my deceased mother in a prominent spot in the living room, and that doesn't bother me, so I guess it depends. I have a mirror in my dining room and hate it because I hate looking at myself while eating. I would love a wall of family in a dining room, but maybe not where they were always staring down at me while eating. A montage of smaller photos that one passes by on the way to the table--wonderful. But really, just some random thoughts. As many have said, there is no one right or wrong way if you like it that's all that matters. Also, there are some frames that you can buy that mix photos with design and sometimes sayings, those would look fab in your room. You could fit a little montage on the right side of the doorway. I almost bought a piece at the local big box that was a clock where you could put a photo in every time slot. I also think that "mixing and matching" photo exhibits in one room is probably a no go too. So for example, putting that clock in our bedroom along with the photos on the shelves might bee too much of a good thing....See MoreAre Capiz Shell Lampshades A Style Faux Pas.
Comments (14)In the spirit of nothing ever dies on the internet, I had completely forgotten about this thread which I started until I came upon the Capiz shells and needed a photo to send to a friend to ask if he could use them. I had tried them out on the sconces in the guest bath but they were a tad too short so the proportions weren't quite right. I then tried then in the chandelier over my dining table but again the proportions were a tad too short. I wound up ordering mica shades from a custom guy who only makes mica shades so I was able to get the exact length and size. Since they are there for decorative rather than lighting purposes, I wasn't concerned about the low level of light and my friends love the "romantic" atmosphere. :-) I wound up getting black silk shades for the dining room chandelier. The black was the suggestion of my designer as she said it would lend more visual interest and "presence" They are lined with gold and I really like the way the balance the actual chandelier which is vintage and I think from the turn of the 20th century as it has a vaguely Art Nouveau feel to it. I think I will remove the chains as it doesn't need that added swag with the black shades but I am open to suggestions. It originally had chains swagged between the lights but they deteriorated with age and so they either have to be replaced or removed entirely....See Moreathensmomof3
