It seems to me that search engines have changed. I used to be able to look up a subject and get good information on that. Here's my example: I need to use a non-allergenic shampoo because I find that I have problems using most common shampoos. So I wanted to look up Neutrogena (supposedly non-allergenic), but all I get are ads for the stuff. Of course, those are all pro, not con. I would like to see both sides of opinion or research. Which search engine can I use?

Search engines`` yep, they seem to be finding us sites that maybe have competitive prices for everything we search these days. And no frigging data/info like we want.

Maybe search 'Neutrogena Forum' 'Neutrogena dandruff'
When you add another more specific keyword to go with it you likely will get less marketing hits, or should I say, mixed in with the marketing hits might be some bits of hits for info. Have to learn to think creatively to try to get around all the etailers.

I had read somewhere that Google had "adjusted" the search criteria so those paying got the better spots. They do not use the meta tags in web site headers the way they used to either seemingly.

Ah, the lure of money.

I just typed the word "search" into the current engine, and this thread did not turn up on the first page of results. I also knew a basic no-earlier-than date, and that the original post contained the terms "garden*" (didn't know if it was "gardenweb" or "garden web"), and that one of the followup posts contained "google". I couldn't recall the posters name, but if available, I would have entered "gw*" in the field for original posters name. How about: 1. Search by title (any phrase or blank, wildcard would be helpful, ands and ors within the search) and 2. Search by individual post content (any phrase or blank,wildcard would be helpful, ands and ors within the search) and 3. Search by entire thread content. and 4. Search by thread originator (any phrase or blank, meaning it may not be the posters exact, complete name) and 5. Search by contributor (any phrase or blank, meaning it may not be the posters exact, complete name) 6. Return results by mm/dd/yy hh:mm of original post or time of last contribution by anyone or time of last contribution by above-searched contributor and 7. Choose recently started posts first or reverse or 8. Instead of sorting by post origination date, sort by contribution date. 9. Return titles only or return text like today Is it possible to search posts older than a certain date? I am not sure, because I do not have patience for the current search, but I believe that posts older than a certain date are unavailable?

Right click in a blank part of your tool bar and then choose customize. You'll get a screen that looks like this one. Just click on the "Search" and drag it back to the tool bar. Then click on the green "exit customization" button in the lower right.

Dad had a maybe/possibly a stroke,,
you should have see all the porn sites that they show you when you're in a panic searching for stroke info.

They did fix that though... took some smarts.

I went, ever so briefly, looking for Neutrogena and was surpised at how little info there was compared to how many wanted to sell you the stuff. I found a forum which boasted that they had the 'cons' on Nutrogena but, insofar as I could tell, they did not.

Perhaps one need to read the label and search for some of the contents rather than the trade name.

1) Quit using the search services of "Google.com" and "Yahoo.com", Use the same terms as when searching except use the following addresses instead:
http://groups.google.com
http://groups.yahoo.com
2) bookmark the two following search engine URL's:
http://clusty.com
and
http://turbo10.com
3) AND!!!! For a great resource, and, great results of great relevancey do a search for the bookmarks that real people found doing real searches for real subjects at:
http://del.icio.us

betts123, you echo my sentiments. Search results, especially on Google and Yahoo produce too many duplicates and too many advertised sites. Google has also been repeatedly accused of political and politically correct responses and that is not what I want, irrespective of my viewpoint.

I know what you mean, most of my internet search experiences end in frustration... I put in a search for kitchen wallpaper and end up with sites for Desktop wallpaper... A search for the medicinal uses of Aloe turned up thousands of sites that sell aloe plants... A search for info on black walnuts ended in a list of black adult sites...

Lately I find that I usually have better results if I use the one on Internet Explorer... It's http://search.msn.com/ ( but if you type that in you'll get http://www.live.com/ ) A lot of it depends on how you word your search... Although I haven't figured out the correct way to ask for anything yet... lol

About the only tip I can offer is to put your search in quotes, that weeds out a lot of useless sites... And never pay attention to the right side of the screen... LOL
