Some good fruits for me so far in 2007
Comments (29)Frank, I got it from the same ultimate source, Dave Wilson Nursery. I got it through Bay Laurel Nursery, one of the other nurseries selling DW trees online. I owe another installment on the fruits. Wickson - this little apple has been excellent. It needs to hang until the background turns yellow. It keeps a long time. The taste is more like a stone fruit: sweet/sour like a plum and the aroma of peaches and apricots. Yum!! Myers Royal Limbertwig - A very nice apple on the sweet side with good aroma as well. It has the pendulant branch habit of many limbertwigs. Rambour d'Hiver - a large French apple which is pretty obscure these days. It is actually not that different from many American apples, e.g. Stayman Winesap comes to mind. Not a strong aromatic favor but a very good sweet/sour balance plus an exceptionally good crunch. Gold Rush - not too many apples this year but they are all excellent - hard, flavorful, with this unusual anise/spicy flavor. A truly great gourmet apple. The quality of the fruit has been very good. The tree did well except it gets cedar apple rust - not sure why this tree touted for such disease resitance is a CAR magnet. Most of my White Winter Pearmain dropped to early, I think the tree lacked water (it sits on a raised area). But, a couple hung on and they are really excellent apples -- something like a Mutsu but quite a bit more concentrated in aromatic flavors. My Geneva 3 hardy kiwis are coming in now, tons of 'em. They are ripening unevenly which makes harvest difficult. I don't like them until they have started to shrivel, they are too acidic before then. Fully ripened they are very good, a bit better than a good Hayward. I had a big harvest of quince and made various compotes, jelllies, etc. I don't know how big a fan I am of them, it takes a lot of quince to make jelly and I feel like I am just flavoring sugar. My wife made a baked quince recipe which was very good. If nothing else the quince will be handy as pectin for other jellies and jams. Scott...See MoreStupice--So good and so bad...
Comments (16)I used to grow Stupice and prefer Matina which is a look alike in all ways except I think the taste is better and it too is early and productive and have tried Kimberly and Bloody Butcher as well. But what I currently like the best is Moravsky Div, which is very early and for me has great taste. There were four different Stupicka's developed in Czechoslovakia, two for outdoor growing and two for glass house growing. At another site there's been a very long thread about Moravsky Div and there appears to be some agreement with research done with Moravoseed and other places in Europe that Moravsky Div may be one of the indoor ones but grows great outside as well. In my experience the fruits of MD are a bit smaller than conventional Stupice or Matina but the taste is much much better and it has performed well for me in my area all summer. Below is a link to Tania's T-base for seed sources and I was the source of seed to Glecklers, Jeff Casey, Sandhill and Victory Seeds, where I usually send the best of what I've grown each year. I also send to Linda Sapp at TGS but she's very behind in trialing varieties right now. Glenn Drowns comment at Sandhill amused me b/c he notes in his catalog/website that he put out 4 inch transplants and had fruits 43 days later. Comments (1)And a Happy Thanksgiving to you! (We celebrated ours--the first and the best--more than six weeks ago.) ** Looks good. Just a couple of suggestions. You can press the bottom of XPS boards tight to the wall with the baseplate. Shim if necessary. As I mentioned earlier, the finished basement would look much better if you boxed in the area with the two electrical panels. You don't need anything elaborate. Just a 2"x6" box with a couple of plywood doors. And you might want to replace that top hinged single pane window with a modern set of aluminum or vinyl sliders with dual panes. I can get a custom made one here for less than $100. if we're going to use gypsum board on the ceiling, do I need to put gypsum board on the interior side of the small XPS inserts up between the joists? Here's the Fairfax Virginia information I posted on the other thread. You can use drywall or the other materials mentioned in the information. The point is to create a discontinuity between the stud spaces in the wall and the spaces between the floor joists above, which includes the rim joist area you're insulating....See MoreMajor NO NO (so far so good) Aquatic Infinity 1
Comments (5)UPDATE: Its been over two years since we first got the tub. The tub it self has been great! i have not had any issues with the functionality (no technical issues). we have the blower blow in maintence mode and turns on every day for a few mins. This doesnt clean the "jets" and we occasionally get small black pieces when we run the pumps. we need to run bleach through the system regulary to address this. The only othr issue is the waterfall is a waste! The motor is noisy and kills the sound of the running water. Overall - we are very happy with this tub and have had no technical issues since we bought it two years ago....See More- 16 years ago
