screen saver.

I have Windows XP. I saved a bunch of Christmassy things in " My Documents " and used that as my screen saver. I want to change that to something else. I removed that folder from "my documnts" and replaced it with the pics I want to use. I have done this before on pevious computers and everything worked fine. This time it is still showing the Christmassy pics. What am I forgetting to do? I don't want these all year round. Presumably there must be a seting some place - but where?

I made a folder and named it slide show then i put all the pics i wanted on my screensaver in this folder. Then go to the screensavor and choose the folder with your pics in it. There may be an easier way but this works for me.

Right click on your desktop, click on Properties. Chose Screen Saver and click on the down arrow and your available screen saver folders should come up. Click on the one you want to use now and Apply, OK, and it should work.

D A, I will rid myself of the screen saver and change all to NEVER. As for the RAM, I don't really understand why it is an issue...... AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD BEFORE THAT IT IS...... What must I do to get more RAM? I am a person who does absolutely NOTHING important with my computer. My computer is for fun. I have lots of saved crafty stuff in my documents.... Many envelopes in there....Lots of Bookmarks and of course some pictures. I disk scan often and also defrag. You mention configuring the startup and services to disable all unnecessary application entries from running. Does that mean to do more than just eliminate what shows on the START menu? I do not have much on the START menu. So what should I get rid of to get more RAM? --------------------------- Zep, not too long ago my computer was doing non-stop buzzing noices. Sounded like when a fly buzzes around your head. Everybody tells me that I need a hearing aid, well, I could hear this buzzing in my next room. I took off the side from the tower and it was soooo dirty. I used that spray stuff and also had to carefully sweep off with a small paint brush. THAT took care of the buzzing, so now I know it is not too dirty in there. The sound is different now. It is not as loud as the buzzing and it is more like a whirring sound........My blue light does not blink when the computer is working. There is a tiny red light that DOES blink once in a while. Yes, I do believe that I need to do something. I need to get me one of those external hard drives and get my pictures out from this computer, that is the only important thing in there . So you're in risk of loosing any saved files, pictures, documents. etc.)......... It sounds like neither monitor or video card to me. First thing I'd do is set screensaver to "None" right click on desktop/ propeties/screensaver. For some reason windows is loading slowly, could be a corrupted program trying to load in the background at startup. Click start/run/type> msconfig and under the startup tab, see if there are any programs that you don't need running and uncheck them. If you have the XP CD, click start/run/type> sfc /scannow, *note the space between c and / If worse comes to worse, you may have to do a repair install of XP, but it could be something as simple as your anti-virus program or some other program is messed up and not loading correctly at startup.

Most likely something is keeping it awake processing. Maybe it you havent already .. set the screensaver to two minutes or something short,,, and if you leave task manager open and select cpu menu probably twice to bring most active cpu users to the top then press the 'Show processes for all users' Keep an eye on it... should have idle processes showing something like 98% at top.... its the items just under that that might show cpu activity ... that would be the likely cuplrit.... (i usually highlight the next item and watch it bouncing).

Jerry, The default location is: C:\Documents and Settings\LOGIN NAME\My Documents If they have been moved, you can right-click on desktop, select properties, screensaver tab, click on settings for "my picture slideshow" and location will be in a box. HTH. Terry

Yes, this is exactly what I thought and what I have done before. The problem is that I am not being given an option of choosing the folder I want to use as the screen saver slide show. Any other suggestions? I expect it is something very simple. Or at least I hope so.

Screensavers (scr) and pics are two different things. Were these actual screensavers or just pics that were used as a desktop picture or background.
The desktop pictures or background are kept in C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\My Documents\My Pictures

The screensavers like 3D Flowerbox, 3D Flying Objects ,3D Pipes, 3D Text, etc are kept in C:\WINDOWS\system32

These were pics that are kept in C:\Documents and Settings\My name\My Documents\My Pictures.

When I want to change to a different selection of pics,I remove the folder of " My pictures" from the above and replace it with another of the same name but with my new selection for "My Pictures slideshow" in it. I then go to the list of available selections, 3D Flower Box, 3 D pipes,3D Flying Objects etc. and choose " My pictures slideshow". It has always defaulted to the current folder listed above under " my Documents" as "My Pictures". However this time, on this computer, it isn't doing that. It is still defaulting to the Christmassy ones which are no longer stored there. I have never had this happen before and it is frustrating to me.

Thanks eveyone for your suggestions. Hopefully I can soon get it.

You can't correct it through the slide show feature of the Screen Saver in Display on your Control Panel?

Where it says use pictures in this folder...(browse) under Settings?

Or are you trying to put pictures in a different screen saver?

You didn't perhaps change the file types? I don't know if it makes any difference for a Screen Saver Slide Show do they take all photo file formats or just BMPs or JPEGs etc.?

Whatever you are doing, you do it through the Control Panel.

That's where you go. If you can't access the pictures through the "browse" for file under the "settings" tab for My Pictures Slide Show...it won't show.

I see.
I would rename the Christmassy My Pictures folder to something else if it is still on your computer, unless you completely deleted that folder.
I'm with you, it should point to your new My Pictures folder.

What you have is a hidden file called desktop configuration.
Open the Christmassy My Pictures folder, click Tools/ Folder Options/ under View Tab/ put a check in Show hidden files and folders/ apply - ok
Now in that folder delete the file called Desktop.
That should stop the display properties from pointing to that folder.

I think I understand now.

From your Start Menu -> Control Panel-> Display-> ScreenSaver-> Pull Down Menu->My Pictures Slide Show->"Settings" button adjacent to 'My Pictures Slide Show'***NOT THE SETTINGS TAB AT THE TOP***-> My Pictures Screen Saver Options-> 'Use pictures in file folder' with a browse option (3rd task down).

My Pictures Screen Saver Options won't come up as an option from (ajacent button) settings unless "My Pictures Slide show" is highlighted and the correct choice is made from the pull-down menu (of various screen savers).

The browse function in 'My Pictures screen saver OPTIONS' will let you use any folder ...where ever it it is on your computer, but you have to select the correct picture folder for the exact correct screen saver on your Control Panel's Display option.

No problemo, it was a pleasure...this is first time I actually knew something that Randy didn't know...I'm going to print this outt and frame it. It probably won't happen again for another 2 1/2 years.

Thanks for the lesson, never knew there was screensaver options and the choice to browse to a folder.

Here's a tip, right click your desktop/ properties. This will get you to display properties a lot faster than going through the control panel.
