That is exactly what I did and it wouldn't change after 10 minutes.

cat walking across keyboard,,
mouse slowly sliding downhill, because dog pulls on cord trying to catch cat.

or maybe open task manager and see what is using cpu after 10 minutes.

When I am waiting for the screen saver to come on the computer is sitting on a stool and the mouse is on a flat surface. I know what you mean about the mouse sliding slowly as it does that when the laptop is closed and it is sitting on top.

I just checked the task manager after 10 min. and the only thing running was Foxfire/Yahoo page.

Any more ideas? I'm using a router from my desktop if that makes any difference, but I can't imagine it would.

Most likely something is keeping it awake processing.

Maybe it you havent already .. set the screensaver to two minutes or something short,,, and if you leave task manager open and select cpu menu probably twice to bring most active cpu users to the top then press the 'Show processes for all users'
Keep an eye on it... should have idle processes showing something like 98% at top.... its the items just under that that might show cpu activity ... that would be the likely cuplrit.... (i usually highlight the next item and watch it bouncing).

If you want, you can make a shortcut and try it to verify the screen saver works and stays running without something waking it up instantly.

Right Click desktop, New/Shortcut & command line will be;
C:\Windows\System32\scrnsave.scr
then next and name it ScreenSaver or anything u like.

Yippee! Finally I have the screen saver working.

Mikie, I went to the site you gave me, Microsoft Support, and it said what you should install....optional hardware update and the name. When I typed in the name I got a line telling me they didn't have that. :-(

Then I went to Start, Control Panel and then Security, check for Updates. On the left it said View Available Updates and I clicked on that. THERE was the hardware update that I needed and I am all set now.
