Laptop won't pass starting window screen

I was in a long meeting using my work laptop (a Dell Lattitude E6410) without a power cord, the battery run out and the laptop died.

When I turned it on again by pushing the power up botton, powered through a docking station, it asked me to enter password, once it accepted the password, went to the "starting window" screen then just stayed there. I shut it down by pushing the power up botton and turned it back on, same thing happened again. Does it mean the laptop has a hardware failure?

Please help!

Unplug it, take the battery out..hold the power button down for a min then put battery back in and plug it in and try booting it up

Or leave battery out and use direct plug. Find out what item is the problem, laptop, battery, dock, plug, so try each method to rule out each.

The label says it has 512 MB of memory. I'm not sure which memory this is referring to, but if it is the RAM on the motherboard, it could use an upgrade. Windows XP likes to have 2 Gigabyte (2 GB) or more. You are using a wireless router on a DSL sevice. Make sure that your wireless router is secured so that someone else within range can't horn in and ride piggyback on your connection for free. The more computers using the connection, the slower it gets for any one computer. The next potential bottle neck is the DSL service. If this is over a phone line, it may not be a large jump in speed over a standard dial-up service. A good connection does have marked improvement in speed, but a troublesome connection looses much speed advantge. Consider taking the computer to a shop or friend and try on their lines. Another problem, if over a phone line, is a noisy line. Thw phone company can test your phone line for quality. Make sure that you tell the technicam that this line will be used for internet service. If over a phone line, another bottleneck can be the phone company. It may not have installed equipemnt capable of high speed data transfer. If you have a friend who has a high speed cable connection with a wireless router, you may want to try your computer on his connection. Have the computer checked out at a computer shop to discover if it is the computer or the DSL service to your house.

try a full power down of everything I do mean everything. Power off the computers, the router, the modem etc. leave all power off for 5 mins or so, then power up in this order, power to modem only let it get fully lit up, then power on to router, let it get fully lit up, then power up your computers letting each get fully loaded. Then try to connect to your wireless, I assume you have put in your wireless network passphrase for the laptops that are trying to access the wifi network.

had you gone to windows updates and got the multitude of updates you would need after using recovery material to re install windows? If not that is probably what happened it started trying to download and install all those many updates and it locked it up. You may have even needed service pack 2 and 3 with a unit that old. plus of course all your antivirus programs etc would be trying to update also. It is always best when doing that kind of recovery where you will be very very far behind in windows updates to turn off automatic updates and go manually to windows update and first get your service packs in order and be absolutely sure to reboot the computer after each service pack, then get any remaining updates. I usually suggest getting them in small batches and creating a restore point before each service pack and before each batch of updates. Should something go wrong you have a good restore point to return to.

I re-installed the OS and sp3 and Internet Explorer 8. I've got it down to this error: Service registration is missing or corrupt http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187 The automatic fixer doesn't fixit and I don't understand the manual instructions. It wants me to look at a registry key but doesn't specify EXACTLY which one. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\(sid)\Patches\(squid) replaced with ( and ). How do I find SID and SQUID? Windows starts so hardware seems working.

Maybe if reseting the battery & hardware, and trying ac only doesn't work...
Tap F8 several times for a couple seconds as soon as you power on and see the first signs of life on the screen.
That should get you to the Start options menu window.

Maybe choose - Last known working configuration or if says something like Repair my computer.. that takes you to more options.
Startup Repair there will fix several things or offer you a restore point probably if it doesn't see anything wrong in its first quick look on some computers.

Thank you so much for all of your inputs.

I took out the battery as suggested, it did not work. Powered on with/without docking station, it did not work.
Went to work called the IT support team.

First tried the "tapping F8 key" just as Mikie suggested, got into Start Options menu, picked "Last use good configuration" or something like that. Once computer finished the steps, repowered it on, but the power up still could not pass the "starting window" screen.

Then tried the "tapping F12 key". I had to start tapping the F12 key as soon as push the power on botton. Finally get into the start options menu, picked "diagnostic". It ran a lengthy testing for about 30 minutes. The results showed error code 2000-0142, msg 6142 status 79. Tech support person said the hard drive was bad. The rest of the testing on memory and CPU...etc. showed no problem.

I am waiting for IT to install new hard drive and port old data. I only hope that the data I did not back up would be preserved.
