A CD question....

Using a floppy was so easy...just "save as" and go on with life.

Now, I don't have a floppy drive....I know you can by external ones, but I've never used CD's and I think floppies are going to become obsolete. Anyway, is there a way you can put something onto a CD like you do a floppy and not go through a program like Nero or Roxio?

I thought I read one time that there was a way to do that...now, bare with me here...I have never put anything on a CD yet.

Tell us what operating system you are using ie WinXP, Win2000, WinMe etc. You can burn CD's using the XP burning program if that is the operating system you are using.
Go to Start>Help and in the search area type Burn CD. It will give you instructions on how to do it

There are programs that allow you to use a CD-RW as a big floppy disk.
I have never used one of these programs.
I have one program here somewhere that came with my first CD burner.
I didn't use it but I still have the program disk here somewhere.

I think Windows XP will let you just drag and drop stuff to
a CD. But the CD may have to be formatted first.

Ares is p2p filesharing software, I don't see what it has to do with burning cds. If you have Windows XP, you can right click on the file you want to burn and 'Send to' CD-RW Drive

Nicole, if you leave the money in for ten years, you would not be paying a penalty at all. The term is ten years. If you left it in you would have pretax income of about $45,000 on an initial investment of $100,000. That is a pretax income number. You only have to pay the penalty if you withdraw before the 120 month term. The APY, net of the penalty would be 0.250%, not 0.030% The risk you are taking is that deposit rates are currently about as low as they can get and will likely increase before the end of the term. Let's say this happens in two years, that means you will have invested your money for two years in an instrument with an APY of essentially 0.250%. I think it's a pretty safe bet that rates will rise, so if it were my money, I'd park it in a money market account (same bank has one for 1.10%) until I thought that deposit rates were stable and then I would buy a long term CD. Putting the money in a liquid account will allow you to maximize your earnings on the cash both now and later. But, YMMV.

You'll probably have HDMI from the cable box to the TV. Depending on your receiver's possible inputs and the cable box's available outputs (optical, rca jacks, etc), have the audio output from the cable box go into your receiver, then the speakers get plugged in to the receiver. I had been speaker hunting for several months, for in-wall speakers I recently settled upon Polk RC-85i's ($225 a pair) in the main room and RC-65i's ($150 a pair) in a couple of other smaller rooms. I had not planned on Polks when I started shopping. And I'd never purchased from Crutchfield before this purchase. Crutchfield was having a special where if you spend over $450 you get a Polk PSW-111 subwoofer (about $300) for free. Not sure what the deal is with the subwoofer, I thought it might be reconditioned/returned or something like that, but when it arrived it came in new packaging, and an email from them said it was indeed new. In-wall speakers can be a bit weak on bass, so a subwoofer isn't a bad idea. For placement, this Polk subwoofer can go pretty much anywhere in a room. Even behind furniture. I had looked at several lines of in-wall speakers. Normally I'm a Klipsch guy, that's what I have for my stereo set-up and for my home theater. For the in-walls these are used primarly as background, whole-house music. So I wasn't looking for audiophile sound, but I was looking for a slightly bright, non-muddy sound. Something that sounded good at mid- to low-volumes, but at the same time a speaker that wouldn't break up at high volume levels. While speaker preferences are quite subjective, I'm very happy with the Polk speakers.

Did you format the discs? It all depends on your software and the CD Drive. Some drives and software will format as they write, but you then may have to manage 'closing' and 'opening' a disc. I keep a few formated discs around so that I can burn a file in a jiffy when I need to. I use re-writable discs and format those as "data" discs. Once formatted, those will operate just like and other data drive. Everything is different when you use a CR write-once disc. Carefully read the CD Drive manual. If you have been sucessful in the past, it may be as you suspect; The drive is dying. Just a thought: Check to see if the blank disks are compatible with your drive. Look at the rating of the write speeds. For example, if your drive is rated for 1X to 4X speed and the disks are 6X to 16X, it is likely that the drive will refuse the disks.

Same problem with me. But I soon learned about the small inexpensive thumb or traveldrives that will work in all newer computers. They are even quicker and easier to use and will hold much more information. This quickly solved this problem for me.

I leave a thumb drive plugged in all the time and save my data backups on it. Easy and so much faster than a floppy.

I have XP Professional...I know you can drag and drop, but those floppies were so darned easy.

I see those flash drives everywhere know...I'll give one a try...floppies don't hold much and those things come in all different sizes, I think

With XP, I just click "File', "Save as", select the drive that burns CD's (and DVD's) - mine is drive D, name my file and then start selecting the things to be saved to the CD. A window will display all the selected items. Put CD in the drive. Go to the left side and click "Copy to CD", and it just does it.

With my thumbdrive, I just plug it into the USB port on the computer and a box shows on the desktop where I click on open. Immediately the file opens and I can simply drag and drop music, photos, etc. I want in this file just like a floppy. It is fully active to be used until I unplug the drive. I can also plug this thumbdrive into my boombox and play the music if I want. These files can be directly burned on a CD either when the thumbdrive is full or when I want to do it.

Yeah, you can "drag and drop" to a CD.

Downside is that if you take that data (CD) with you anywhere, you have to have a CD drive available in order to be able to retrieve the data. And, sometimes data burned to CD in one format is not readable in a CD drive of another format.

You can get a 4 GB thumb/flash drive now for well under $200. Much more compact to carry with you, too.

I've seen those drives for $17....could that be? I know they wouldn't be very big, but you're talking $200...I think the most expensive one I have seen was $79...thumb, flash and jump drives are the same thing, aren't they? $17 "would" be well under $200
