Using broken CD's for bowling balls; questions

I have finally have enough cd's to do a bowling ball with them.

Question is; what do you use to attach them, and do you use grout of any kind, and are there any special tips?

I use E6000 when attaching stuff to my bb's.

Here is a link to my page to see my CD bb.

I used tile adhesive, put on thick so it weeped out. No need for grout that would scratch up the CD/s. I then sealed it with tilelab.

A cursory perusal of the San Francisco craigslist shows numerous bowling balls for sale in the $10 -$20 range. You could arrange a pickup at a central location, load up the car with bowling balls -- hope your suspension is in good shape! For volume, it wouldn't hurt to contact some bowling alleys, maybe they have damaged balls they need to get rid of. Do they all have to match? Or is pearly white, sparkly blue, and marbled red ok? Will you coat them with something textured, or paint them? Sounds like an interesting plan. In the south of Costa Rica, the pre-Columbian people scattered the landscape with perfectly round stones in varying sizes -- most of them far more grand than your average bowling ball. Nobody knows the significance of the round stones, but they are quite attractive lying in green fields and in front of simple farm houses. When the Europeans came, they tried to break them open, thinking they would find gold inside. They did not find any gold, of course, but ruined the stones.

There's another pond below those 2 in the pictures. I love my ponds too. The birds come in the summer and bathe in the channel. I love to watch them and the sound, of the water and the falls, is very soothing. That window frame was very easy. Had the old frame, added the box on front, painted it, and its ready to go in the garden. I cant wait to see it after it's planted. Deb

Well since you asked - here are the instructions that I have :-) I can't remember where they came from (some one out in web land)) What do you do with all those free CR-ROMS you get promoting an on-line service? How 'bout making a CD BALL! You need 12 cds. I made a template out of cardboard the size of a cd, which has 5 evenly spaced notches around its circumference. I used it to mark 5 dots on the edge of each cd. Now tape 2 cds together with dots touching (tape on the unprinted side). Do this with 4 more cds so you have a "flower" of one cd with 5 petals. Now tape the adjacent "petals" together, cupping the flower towards the printed side (the tape is on the unprinted outside). Now glue all the joints on the inside with your trusty glue gun, and when the glue is set, remove the tape. Now do this whole thing again, but leave off one petal. You should have two "bowls", one of which is incomplete, plus a loose cd. Fit the two halves together (matching up the dots) and tape. Glue all the joints inside; it gets tricky working through the cd size hole, but it CAN be done. The last cd can be put in by taping it in place, and shooting a little hot glue around the tape into the joint. After the glue is cool, remove the tape, and TADA! a cd ball. I thought about putting a Christmas light in each cd hole, the reflections and cd rainbows would look pretty.

What do you use as a bowling ball stand?

I've gotten several stands at Thrift shops(TS is short for thrift shops in case you see it) ones I get I use to hold pots so they don't tip over but perfect for bb. they are simply 2 wrought iron rings 1 larger than the other with about 4 short pieces of wrought iron holding them apart about 6-8in. high. so I just use them either right side up or upside down- smaller ring on top would be just right for BB. I don't know if they were meant to hold plants or something else. Could be kids metal shop project. Most are sprayed black but I've redid some green or clay color. They are heavy & last forever. Jan

My question is how to break the CD's? I have tried several methods. Nothing is working very well. I thought about tile nippers but have misplaced the ones I just recently bought at Lowes for $20. Rats! So don't know if they would work. Is there an easy way to break them? Thanks.

Millie-I have not done a CD bowling ball.....yet,but I remember several people saying they put the CDs in boiling water for a few minutes to make them pliable then cut them with scissors.Be careful though.Wear gloves or use an oven mitt to handle the CD with........Lillie

Thanks Lillie. I did try a cd in hot water but with my arthritic hands it was still tough. Maybe I didn't leave it in the water long enough. Will try again and pretend I am boiling chicken for dumplings. Just kidding.

Millie, if you live in cold country, try leaving it outside to freeze, then stick it in a sturdy paper grocery bag & whacking it with a hammer.

This is not the voice of experience with CDs, but I accidentally ran over a plastic Rubbermaid stool when it was frozen (not much below 32F) & it shattered beautifully!

I cut mine with Kitchen scissors after putting them in boiling water for a little while.
